Technology Creates Emptiness

What’s the first thing you do when you walk into a restaurant? Ask for the wi-fi password, of course. Later the table is filled with silence, everyone staring at their phone. This is a routine now in our everyday lives, and the characters of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, can relate. To demonstrate their society’s obsession with technology and the theme “mindless pleasure seeking and materialism make for an empty life’, my partner Jing Jing and I decided to create three haikus using quotes from the book.

Seashells

Stretched on the bed; cold

Waves come in and bore her off

No night in last years

(Bradbury 16)

Parlor Walls

That’s my family:

Programs on the parlor walls

They tell things, I laugh

(53)(75)

Silence

Cars, clothes, swimming pools

Bunch of people not talking

Why are we empty?
