Rai writes, “I’ll go…” (114). Manny finally makes the decision and agrees to go to Punjab for 2 months with his family for vacation. There, India, is where his old man claims is the most amazing place he will ever go to. Manny, not thinking too much, believes what his old man said and will be traveling to India for the first time.
When Manny and his family arrived at Punjab, it was much hotter than England. The heat was getting him frustrated and he desperately needed a pack of cigarettes. Meeting his uncles, cousins, and aunts wasn’t too bad, they were all very kind to him. Staying for about 2 weeks, he gets closer with his cousin, Inderjit. “This is what I smoke. English cigarettes” (140). This quote explains how Manny gets closer with Inderjit, they both smoke cigarettes. Living there for about 6 weeks, his oldest brother, Rajit and his wife, had to leave because Rajit had to work. Rai writes, “Two more weeks of Warm cola and dodgy fags. Two more weeks, man” (148). Manny could not wait any longer to meet his best friend Ady and girl friend Lisa in England.
Rai writes, “That agent, Manjit, the one that has our tickets and passports. He had a problem at his office and they have been stolen…” (150). Manny was in total shock when he heard this, because of this he cannot go to his, real home. Manny’s old man tells him he and his mother will be going to Jullundur to fix this problem. While they fix this problem, Harry and his wife will be visiting her family. Now, Manny was left alone with his cousins and other relatives. In my perspective, living without parents telling you what to do is really fun. Getting to do whatever you want, sleep late, play video games, watch TV, etc. But to Manny, Manny has to live with the people who live in the culture where you have to marry who your parents choose, which is his total nightmare.
Rai writes, “They were all liars, all of them. In it together from the beginning and they had tricked me” (164). Manny was brought to another place in India for a day in order to give time for all of his family members to leave back to England. Manny was trolled to come to India, he knew his family wanted him to marry another girl other than Lisa, just like his cousins and other relatives. Rai writes, “You think you’re so clever, hey? Try laughing next month when you’re still here, innit” (152). Manny finally realizes what Harry meant. His entire family knew this plan, that he would be left behind alone. All the things his dad was talking about, how beautiful India is, were all lies. Rai writes, “Bad people. Druggies and whores. It’s not good” (145). Manny’s old man was such a hypocrite going on about the ‘drug society’ and black people all the time. Here, right here in the village he called home, there were drugs and prostitutes and people have affairs, yet Manny hadn’t even seen a single white or black person in this village. Manny could not believe what his family had done to him. Now he has made the decision to revenge, he must have to find a way to ruin his old man’s image.
