You Must Try Before Giving Up

Do you have the courage to stand up for others? Through out reading the book, Gone, I started to think the theme of the book is “You must try before giving up ” because the main character Sam wanted to at least try defeating Caine before surrendering because he didn’t want Caine to destroy everything. Grant writes, “Orc murdered Bette” (223). At the start Sam didn’t really want to care about whom is in charge, but after a girl named Bette had been killed in the FAYZ by one of Caine’s helpers. Sam realized Caine couldn’t be the leader of the FAYZ.

Sam was very unconfident with himself at first because he personally thinks he might become a person like Caine if he is in charge knowing that he also has special powers. Grant writes, “…you have me” (225). Luckily Sam’s girl friend, Astrid, convinced Sam to fight back because she also hated the way people were treated after Caine started ruling the FAYZ. During the rising action, Caine captures Sam because he realises he was his brother and also had a great amount of power. Luckily his friend Quinn saved him as they ran off into the woods with Astrid, Edilio, Peter and Lana. But then Sam realized running away was not an option because the children back at Perido Beach needed help so they decide to head back and help. Grant writes, “Coates kids, Perdido Beach kids, we’re together now” (461). Since Caine and Drake were also very mean to the Coates kids, most of the Coates kids hated the two of them so they all believed Sam would defeat Caine and Drake. Grant writes, “My name’s Brianna. I can go real fast” (462). There were a lot more kids with special powers like teleporting or super speed that gave Sam even more confidence in winning the fight against Caine. Sam and Caine were both almost turning fifteen, meaning that they would both be gone very soon so Caine wanted to fight as fast as possible. They both turned fifteen when they were fighting each other but the both of them already learned how to not disappear when turning fifteen. “I guess we won” (613). Because Sam never gave up, he defeats Caine at the end so Caine and his followers were forced to leave Perdido Beach. There were many moments where Sam wanted to give up but he knew he had to try defeating Caine or else the people left in the FAYZ would be doomed.
