The Final Decision

Did you know that trackers send signals when they get damaged? Unfortunately, Tally the protagonist of the book Uglies by Scott Westefeld didn’t know that. The conflict started out as person vs. self because Tally wasn’t sure either to betray the smoke city or stay ugly for life, but as she got to know David better, she made her decision.

Westefeld writes, “Yes. What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful” (258). Tally falls in love with David as they got to know each other better which was one of the biggest reason she made her decision. Westefeld writes, “Our data showed that everyone has the lesions after their first operation” (250). The second reason was after hearing about the truth of being pretty. David’s parents used to be doctors in the city until they found out the plastic surgeries they were giving were bad for the people, but Dr. Cable didn’t care so they escaped the city and started the Smoke and accepted only uglies until they found a cure. Westefeld writes, “She opened her hand and threw the necklace into the centre of the fire” (251). When she finally made her decision on staying at Smoke forever with David, she throws away her pendant but she didn’t know the pendant would send a signal when it gets damaged.

The following day they were attacked by the Special Circumstances and Smoke was destroyed, all the Smokies were captured and sent back to the city. Westerfeld writes, “You had to betray the whole Smoke!” (277). Tally felt very bad about her betrayal so she decides to go back to the city and rescue everyone. Westefeld writes, “You made it!” (294). Luckily for David, he wasn’t at Smoke when the Special Circumference was there so the two of them decide to head back and rescue them. Westefeld writes, “It was Shay. She was pretty.” (350). Unfortunately when they got down the prison to rescue people, Shay was already turned into a pretty, and because of the lesions her brain was messed up. Tally, David, Croy, Shay, and Maddy(David’s mom), the five of them escape the prison and got to safety. But Az(David’s dad) passed away when he was tested by Dr. Cable with their new surgery.

Maddy(David’s mom) finally found a cure for the lesions but Shay didn’t want to cooperate because she thinks she’s happy the way she is right now. Maddy was fine with Shay’s decision because there is still a chance of failure. Westerfeld writes, “I’m the reason she’s like this, pretty and brainless” (385). Since Tally was the reason Shay became brainless, she decided to sacrifice herself and make herself pretty and then take the cure. Westerfeld writes, “Make me pretty” (392).

Even though her conflict ended when she threw away the pendant, she still sort of betrayed Smoke when she activated the pendant when she burned it. To pay back for what she had done to Smoke, she sacrifices herself to test the cure to save everyone.
