Austin’s Life Is Back On Track

Is there a girl you really like and would think of her all day long? In the book, Damage, Austin Reid has finally found something he cared about. After Heather and Austin started dating, Austin could not stop thinking about her and wanting to hang out with her. Jenkins writes, “Sorry, I got things to do” (94). Austin’s best friend, Curtis, invited him to come skiing with him over Christmas break but Austin denied it, that showed how he cared about Heather way more than hanging out with friends.

Jenkins writes, “By the time a few weeks have passed, Austin is feeling almost like his old self again” (87). Life is currently looking very good for Austin, since he has found something he cared about, he would take any chance to see her. Jenkins writes, “Don’t be so cynical, baby” (95). Austin listened to all the cd’s Heather shared with him, he listened it so many times he could already sing random parts of some songs even though he personally disliked those kind of music. But if it was a way to become closer with Heather, he would listen to all of them. During the rising action, Austin and Heather’s relationship became even better, where they would meet up after Austin’s football practice for most of the time. Jenkins writes, “Everybody knows he and Kat broke up because she didn’t want to do it, and he did” (99). Heather and Curtis disliked each other, so Heather started to tease and complain about Curtis in front of Austin. Austin started to get a little frustrated but he knew what was right (let Heather say what she wants so the two of them would be fine). Even though it looked like he only cared about Heather, he actually also cared a lot about Curtis because they were best friends for a long time. Jenkins writes, “Tonight, his screwup kept a Bulldog drive alive. In Curtis’s book, that means he hand delivered them a touch down” (105). The two things that mattered to Curtis the most was Football and Kat, today he failed in a football game so he was very frustrated at himself. As a good friend, Austin would cheer him up and tell him to forget about it. Jenkins writes, “You’re the first guy I’ve let in my room. I never let guys in” (115). The relationship between Austin and Heather was probably the longest one according to Heather. Heather’s bedroom was like the most private place in her house, only she could enter, and she only believed Austin. They talked and talked, mostly about Heather because she is sort of selfish but Austin didn’t mind, he liked being with Heather.

The Unexpected Ending

Many of you might think the conflict of “The Defender” is Ian and his father running for their lives(a.k.a person vs society), but what I think is way different. Gibbons writes, “For his secrets, for his past, Ian still hates him”, (123).What I think the conflict of the book is will Ian forgive what his dad have done(a.k.a person vs person). The reason I think that is the conflict of the book is because as a child myself, if my dad was a thief and was running away for his life. First, it would be hard for me to adapt to what he has done. Secondly, what my life will be like in the past years. Although Ian’s dad was a big thief, and Ian could not believe any of his dad’s past. I feel like after the truth was given to Ian, and the two of them running for their lives, Ian and his dad got to know each other better and they were much closer than before.

Gibbons writes, “Don’t argue, Ian. We’ve got this one chance. I don’t care how you do it, but find a first-floor balcony and jump. I’ll be there with the car”, (152). This quote explains when Ian was captured by the Irish people, his dad came to rescue him even though they were after his dad instead of him. During the situation, Ian and his dad were like partners, on the phone and telling each other what to do. Ian’s father coming back for Ian shows how much his dad loves him and does not want to lose him. “Dad, this is crazy”, (164). This quote happened when the two of them were running while people were shooting them from the back, his dad did not give up easily, he would try anything to keep his son safe from the Irish people. They didn’t only gain a better relationship while they are running. “The answer is yes”, (167). There were multiple times when they were safe, and in those times, his dad tries his best to tell Ian as much as possible. He tells Ian about him killing the person who hurt his friend and her family. After all these different sort of situations Ian and his dad had gone through, Ian forgives him. “All that time you were feeling bad, I never even knew. I was to busy having a happy childhood. So we had to move a few times? Big deal. It never did me any harm”, (187). Ian’s dad tells Ian that life would have been better if he didn’t do these bad things, but Ian claims that he was a good father and gave him everything he wanted. As a reader, I really liked what Allan Gibbons wrote for the last sentence of the book. “Time doesn’t take away the pain, but it can heal”

Did your parents hide any secrets? Well, in The Defender by Alan Gibbons, Ian’s dad was hiding a giant secret. Gibbons writes, “I owe them two thousand pounds”(23). In the first gif, Ian’s dad decided to tell Ian his secret because he thinks he should be old enough to know this. Another reason that leads to it, is because the people he owed found where they lived. The second gif is just showing how shocked Ian was, because he could not believe what his dad did. The bad part is, Ian’s dad already spent more than half of it, so it was going to be impossible to pay back the money owed. The third gif was when Ian was running away from the 2 Irish men that decided to chase him instead of his dad. Because they knew if they capture Ian, money will come to them in no time. “Where in God’s name are you, son?(105). This was when the 2 Irish men have already caught Ian, but Ian’s dad still has no idea. But…  078955 27707 (Peter Moore a.k.a Ian’s dad phone number).

Life in A Dangerous World

In the book The Defender by Alan Gibbons, Ian Moore’s life was as normal as it could be. He was just a regular fourteen year old teenager. “The reason he is back home at this time is because he was clowning around at school, trying to impress the girls in general and Vicky Shaw  in particular”(Gibbons3). He liked a girl in his grade named Vicky Shaw, and he tried everything to impress her just like any   other teenage crush. Grades didn’t matter for him, all that mattered to him was having fun. But when two Irish strangers arrived at his doorstep, his life was changed forever.

Ian finds out his dad owes the Irish people two hundred thousand pounds, that was the reason they moved places every now and then. “That’s enough!”(47). Ian’s dad was already prepared for this. But Ian was obviously not. Moments ago, Ian still had a regular teenager life, but now he has to delete his childish thoughts and acts. Ian has to start being mature in order for him to handle this situation. This situation happens a lot in movies when the main character finds out his/her parents owes money and they have to run for their lives, but this is real.

Bravery Can Be Built Up

Are you brave enough to sacrifice your own life for others? I think the theme of the Insurgent is Bravery because the main character Tris showed bravery in multiple situations in the book. Wroth writes, “I believe Jeanine Matthews wanted to see me,” (320). This quote shows bravery because in order for them to plan out their attack on Erudite, one person had to go find out Erudites plan. And Tris decided to risk her own life to save thousands of lives being controlled.

“I shot Will,” (151). This was another quote showing Tris’s bravery, because she did not have to tell other people she killed Will and cause Christina to hate her, but she decides to tell others because she did not want to hide this secret anymore. “I don’t want to die” (383). I’m not saying that Tris is not scared of anything. Just like everyone, even me, we all have fears. When I was 8 years old, my family was watching a scary movie. I was very scared because the back ground music made the movie very scary, cause you never know when the scary person pops out.  When Tris was afraid of being killed by the death serum, Peter helped her have less pressure. Over many different situations, I think Tris becomes braver and stronger. To sum up , I think Veronica Wroth’s message is “Bravery can be built up”

The Change of Peter

sad

Wroth writes, “Let’s go, Stiff”(329), “That doesn’t make sense. He’s eighteen; he’ll find another girlfriend once you’re dead. And he’s stupid if he doesn’t know that(339). Peter was a mean and selfish boy, he liked calling people names and he always wanted to win no matter what. However, in important moments, he shocked me. When reading, I thought Peter hated Tris and wanted her to die, but the second when Tris was going to be killed by the death serum (Jeanine’s inventions). Peter saves her.

The death serum did not work on Tris because Peter changed the death serum into a paralytic serum. “Then the heart monitor stops beeping”(385). Jeanine believed Tris was dead since the heart monitor stops beeping. But Peter actually connected the wire with a dead person’s heart beat so it would look like Tris died. After tricking Jeanine, Peter quickly brings Tris to Tobias and the three of them starts to escape the compound. “Tris, you first”(389). When the three of them were running for their lives, Peter protected Tris and let her go before him so she wouldn’t get caught. I was not expecting Peter to save Tris because Peter and Tris were rivals in the book, so what Peter did really shocked me.

Short Description of Meme#3

But Dauntless and Abnegation wants to stop them, in order to stop them, they will need more factions to help(Amity, Factionless, Candor).

I created a multi media from the book Insurgent, published by the New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth. Because this is the second book of the series, the exposition of the second book continues from the end of Divergent. The memes shows the conflict of the book by first demonstrating Jeanine, the Erudite leader, wants to control the factions by making different kinds of simulation for different sort of people. The reason Jeanine wants to control factions is because she wants to keep the society under control. But Abnegation and Dauntless, are trying to stop Erudite from controlling the people in each faction. Wroth writes, “We can’t attack without Candor, I think, unless we have the factionless”(223). Just Abnegation and Dauntless obviously can’t defeat an overpowered Erudite. So they are hoping the faction less or Amity would help them.
