Divergent: The Tangled Love, an interpretation of a scene in “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream”0

Did you ever watch the movie called “Divergent”? I am pretty sure you did, because it is so popular. I have another question for you. Have you ever read William Shakespeare‘s A Mid Summer Night’s Dream? Now, here comes the real question. Can you imagine what it will be like for them to be combined? Well, this is what we have accomplished for our last English 9 project, the Director’s Notebook.

For this final project, I have worked with Elaine and Michelle to create a film where we combined Divergent and A Mid Summer Night’s Dream, interpreting lines 123 – 221 from act 3.2. We have changed the names of the characters so that it fits more to the Divergent setting, Lysander to Four, Hermia to Tris, Demetrius to Caleb, and Helena to Jeanine. Elaine played the role of Caleb, Michelle acted as Four and Tris, and my role was Jeanine. It was interesting to find out that they merged in well, because they seemed to be very contrastive. They tend to have totally different characters, but somehow have similar plots, and flows the same direction. However, it turned out more dramatic, because the relationships are complicated and are all tangled up.

To acquire the final product for this project, we split roles to make it easier. I was in charge of costumes, props, setting and adding some subtext to the script. We proceeded with translating the Shakespearean words into modern English for our own characters, and I chose to act as Jeanine. There were four characters to choose from, but I chose her because I thought she was a character who expresses her feelings the most. In our film, Jeanine is an innocent character who is confused most of the time. She is not sure whether or not Caleb and Four loves her, and I tried to show these through my facial expressions. In the beginning when she starts talking to Four and tells him that he is trying to weigh her, I raised my eyebrows and rolled my eyes to express that she is suspicious. The different volumes of my voice were used to symbolize her mood changes, as time goes on and as the process of Four and Caleb’s persuasion went on, I showed her changed behavior by decreasing the volume of my voice and deduction of movements. Also, for places where she had to convey her opinions strongly, I slightly paused for effect and made a strong eye contact with the character that she was communicating with. My gestures were greatly impacted by the content of lines that she had to say, when she had to emphasize more of her madness towards the other character, I pointed directly at the character to pass on the focus. I got ideas for costumes from the movie Divergent, therefore, the overall color scheme is black. After some research of the symbols of colors and what they represent, I have utilized them to the costumes I chose for the characters. Linking to the fact that Jeanine is innocent, Caleb is gentle, Four is manly and Tris is hurt, I have applied these facts when considering the costumes. Also, I thought minor details would express a lot, so I focused on them and tried not to lose hidden personalities of the characters. The costumes helped build on the mood of the scenes and were a route of expressing the characteristics. It explained more about the behaviors of the characters and gave more explanation to avoid confusion for the viewers. Since our film was a combination of Divergent and A Mid Summer Night’s Dream, the setting was basically the Divergent setting. The starting scene was behind web which also appeared in the movie, but this also symbolized the complicated relationships of the characters. Elaine and I mainly focused on how to express the different aspects of the plot and how they could be shown through the locations. We used the different edges of the locations to express the desperate feelings of characters and a clue of how the story will go on. The only prop that we used was the leather glove that Four throws on the ground, and this was used to add on the intensity of the mood and to display his characteristic of being aggressive. It was thrown two times to emphasize his mood and drag the focus more on him.

Replanting0

Today’s task was to replant and move it outside, but we were good because we planted outside already. We didn’t have to replant, we watered them and were happy to find out that the shoots are getting longer and new seeds are still shown to be growing.

Art and literature1

There is a connection between art and literature, and the main thing is that they both express emotions. When I was thinking of ideas for the CREATE project, I thought it would be good to create a piece of artwork inspired by the play The Mid Summer Night’s Dream. Since this is what we are studying during English these days, I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to look more into the play and think out of the box.

By creating this piece of artwork, I could connect to the Grade 9 Common Core Standard – Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening. After reading The Mid Summer Night’s Dream, I focused on the mood and choices of phrases or words that were used, and how this affected the overall theme. The first thing I thought of about this play was that it’s chaotic. The love lives are all twisted and the relationships are very complicated, so I thought I should use colors that don’t match together. The four main colors I used were white, blue, yellow and dark brown which are barely used together when creating a piece of artwork. I thought this would portray the abnormal features of this play and I inserted some blobs of paint on these colors so that the craziness is expressed. Also, I made the colors go from light to dark which showed the process of the play, starting off pretty normal but becoming more and more chaotic towards the end. I focused mostly on the bottom part, because I thought this should express craziness at the most, and I made this happen by mixing dark brown and purple so that it turns out an unique color. On top of this layer, I splashed some yellow paint to express the confusion that characters portray in the play.

I enjoyed working on this project, and was able to understand more about the play and portray a connection between literature and artwork. After this project, I think there is an interesting connection between them and I am willing to look more deeply into this.

Science daily log #90

We went to check the growth of the seeds, and were very disappointed to find out that someone dug up our plants. Even though Ellie is not in our group, she helped a lot to save the plants, and luckily we got clumps of roots planted back. To rescue them, we watered them a lot so that it could grow continuously. I hope there won’t be anything happening like this once again. ):

It’s my pleasure, Queen Titania0

Hm… A comparison between a character in William Shakespeare‘s Mid Summer Night’s Dream and myself? As soon as I read the assignment that was given, I was surprised and interested at the same time.

I thought to myself, it’s hard to compare myself to other people, but I have to compare characters in the play and myself? This is insane. Worries came along, and I had no idea how to accomplish this assignment. I flipped through the book once more, and attempted to look more depth into characters, and found a character that I thought I might be able to compare. Queen Titania.

Queen Titania, being the queen of the fairies, plays a main role in the play. She leads the fairies, and is associated with different characters, Oberon being her husband and gradually falls in love with Bottom, due to the love potion that Puck placed in her eyes. The main feature of her is that she loves nature. “Therefore the moon, the governess of floods, Pale in her anger, washes all the air, that rheumatic diseases do abound” (2.1 103 – 105) shows she has strong feelings towards nature and how much she cares. This is pretty relatable to me, because I love nature and venture to save the environment. Environment issues are pretty significant current days, and whenever I hear about them, I get anxious and research any approaches I could make to save the environment and make this place a better place for all existences to live. This is why I join clubs related to environment, for example, HFH, we do activities for fundraising, and the collection of money that we earn all goes to saving the environment. Before, my feelings toward nature wasn’t as passionate as nowadays, but when I studied about global warming in science class a few years ago, it was a revelation. I had no idea how serious this issue was and how negative this was. This helped me understand more of Titania and her feelings, because I am at the same perspective as her and feel the same for the environment. While reading through her dialogues, I became emotional and put myself in her shoes.

On the other hand, even if I have a vital similarity with her, I also found something that is different from me. Throughout the play, she is portrayed as a strong character. In my opinion, this differs me from her. “Therefore the winds, piping to us in vain, as in revenge, have sucked up from the sea, contagious fogs, which falling in the land, have every pelting river made so proud, that they have overborne their continents.” (2.1 110 – 113) This scene is when she argues with her husband, Oberon, and portrays that she has strong opinions. I am honestly not a strong person, not meaning in strength, but as my personal trait. I am not that good in arguing when situations of conflict arise, and I can’t emphasize my opinion as strongly. I care about other people’s emotions abundantly, so I fear arguing with them. Even though I have my opinion, if I think that it will be better for the situation to flow when I let down, I try to merge it with other people’s ideas. This has both good and bad sides, because it is not as time consuming and people think I am nice and friendly, but it is harder for me to accomplish something that I wish.

This assignment was a great opportunity for me to reflect on my characteristics and look more in depth to The Mid Summer Night’s Dream. In the beginning, I was very worried, but I actually started to enjoy at some point of time.

Flower market0

We went to the flower market to buy seeds that we are going to plant outside the greenhouse. There were lots of markets that were next to each other so we went around asking about the prices and looking at qualities. We bought a bag of fertilizer that will help the growth of seeds and tomato seeds, basil seeds and pepper seeds. The seeds were 2RMB each which were pretty cheap.
