“Love”ious reason I love you, An interpretation of a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream

May 17th, 2016

Acting out A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by Shakespeare wasn’t an easy task. We had to fully understand the mood and tone of the characters in the scene we chose to act out. We have interpreted act 3 scene 2 line 165-315, when both men fall love with one woman, who thinks two men are mocking her in a way. Below is our short video of what we interpreted, Director’s notebook shows how we created the video, and my individual reflection which talks about my individual contribution.

Director’s Notebook:

<iframe src=”https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1uyMnEa2E-eeYufUjaLgYaaxsakqyAzDg7jsbzYDBvtE/embed?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000″ frameborder=”0″ width=”960″ height=”569″ allowfullscreen=”true” mozallowfullscreen=”true” webkitallowfullscreen=”true”></iframe>

Sets and Props:

Classroom shows the changes of relationship between characters by the sitting positions each character is at. In this case, Helana, Demetrius, and Lysander sits together, when Hermia is at the back table sitting alone, and this shows that Lysander and Hermia’s relationship had changed.

Staircase is the major setting in our film, where most of the love conflicts occurs. The main point why we chose the staircase is to show the differ of “level” for each characters. Helana, who walks down the stairs brings all the attention, whereas, Hermia and other two is at the bottom, which gets NO attention.

Soft Bats:

Bats coming out of nowhere seems very random, and we aimed for it because the play should still be comedy and something random would make it. The bats show Demetrius and Lysander’s relationship, because two bats had two opposite colors, which represents those two men is hostile and is ready to fight.

Individual reflection:

We have created the act of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in to our own understanding of its scene. Part we analysis and changed is on act 3 scene 2 where Shakespeare uses two lovers conflicts for one presenting its theme, love.  In this project, I have assisted my group planning sets and props.

Two setting I chose were the classroom and the staircase. I chose the classroom because I based on the original setting where there’s only four of the characters and I decided that the empty classroom would fit the setting of its original text and also by the position of sitting, we could already show the love conflict between two men, boys, and the isolation of Hermia.

The main setting was the staircase and it is because the staircase would help to show more of the characterizations of each characters. By Helana, me, walk down the stairs from the top and rest at the bottom, we could easily show the “level” difference of Helana and the rest. As Helana comes down, Helana is viewed as an angel descending from the sky, which gives Helana a whole focus and love. And again, position of each characters are easily mentioned when in the staircase, where Helana is next Lysander, and next to Lysander is Hermia, who takes place, then Demetrius. The position of characters shows that even though Hermia and Lysander is standing next to other, Lysander is facing back towards Hermia but facing face – to – face with Helana, already could tell the tilt between Lysander and Hermia.

Basic props we used were the soft bats, which were used when Demetrius and Lysander fights. Even though the bats came from nowhere, and seems random, we aimed for it, because the original play is a comedy play. However, the bats still bring the seriousness of the act, however, we developed into the silly and funny scene, when Demetrius and Lysander both drops the bats and “cutie punch” each other and we did so because A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy act. The color of two bats also shows the relationship between them. One’s red and one’s green, which in the color scheme, they are opposite colors. Two differ colors represents they are hostile.

Our performance showed the theme of love conflicts. As the play goes on, Lysander, Hermia, and Demetrius fight over love, which tells the theme of love conflicts. Helana, however, feels annoyed and anger, because she thinks they are playing a “little game”. Confusion gets deeper and deeper, which creates more chaos and conflicts.

In this play, I worked as Helana, who owns two men’s love, but thinks they are mocking her. Because I, Helana, think I am being mocked, my gesture mostly shows dislike, annoyed and bit sorrow. My voice is spoken loudly with heavy tone to show my how I am upset with then mocking me.

I “create” project

May 9th, 2016

For my create project, I had worked on writing poems inspired by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare uses poetry as an another tool of writing a story, which I thought, very creative. My two poems aren’t as appealing as Shakespeare’s work, not much literary device, no big and strong vocabularies, but this is what I think is poetry.

Take me away

Tick tock tick tock,

Clock sings quiet.

Tap tap tap,

Needle dances

With the flow of the clock’s song.

Drippity-drop, drippity-drop,

As if each drop was a visitor,

Who came to listen to the wonderful harmony.

And I,

Here for nothing more, nothing less,

But something, anything.

Nothing else

I need help.

What are these rivers of pain?

Am I sad?

I don’t know,

But all I want to do is cry.

I don’t know,

I’m scared.

I need someone,

I’m dying,

Drowning in my own tears.

Would anyone know?

Would anyone care?

Maybe dying is fine.

Then please death,

Take me away,

Away from anything, everything.

I won’t miss it.

Should I?

My first poem “take me away” is more imagery based poem, which also shows my experience having these hard times. The first stanza talks about how beautiful the world is, even a sound of clock, needle and rain drops are wonderful songs, dances and people. But even though the world is colorful and beautiful, I am depressed, not satisfied. Then moving on the the next stanza, “’Why? What are these rivers of pain?’” shows that I don’t know, but I’m sad. Then the last stanza brings me to the end where I want to rest myself by dying, and no one would know or care because it is me who will die.

One medicine, three patients

My dad comes home,

With sketches and bruise.

Since when he started to buy pains?

And why,

Does he try to hide

His hunted heart

With his two small hands?

The hider

My dad

In the deep dark

One light shines,

My brother,

Something had changed my brother.

Only things that goes in to his heart,

A poison,

Poison smoke,

Poison drink.

He tries to be happy,

Be satisficed,

With those poisons.

The sacrificed soul,

My brother.

Missing childhood,

My sister.

A girl without mom,

My sister.

Lovely, kind.

My sister.

Where did she go?

Is she finding her childhood,

Missing mom?

(Please wake up…)

The childhood chaser,

My sister.

All broken,

All hurt,

My family need help,

And I have to be the one

The one, who cure them,

Care them,

Love them.

The only medicine,

My second poem “One medicine, three patients”, which is also my experienced based, gives the reader a mysterious feeling, which makes them question themselves, ‘if there is only one medicine, what about the other two?’. “‘And why, does he try to hide his hunted heart with his two small hands?’” shows how my dad is weakened by stress, because my dad’s hands aren’t “small”, but I used small to show my dad got weakened. “’In the deep dark one light shines, my brother, texting.’”. This shows that only that he feels joyful is texting not being with us, family. “’Sacrificed soul”, presents my brother’s dead emotions from the academic pressure. My sister, “’Childhood chaser’” is who didn’t have enough love from our parents because of divorce and she doesn’t have any memories of them together.

Nicks Bottom

May 7th, 2016

As I slowly be able to understand A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, I found how Nick Bottom, one of the major character in this act, is similar to me. Not because he has name in common with me, but his characteristics in the act shows he and I have very similar behavior and mindsets. But if there are similarities, there would also be differences.

Beside we have the same name, what I think Nick Bottom has in common with me is that his thought, or believe in himself is supreme, just like me. “’ Let me play the lion too. I will roar that I will do any man’s heart good to hear me.”’. This scene is where Nick Bottom wants to act more than the limit he could take care, but this is not being Nick Bottom selfish and stupid. He got the trust in him, and that’s why he is so confidence about doing every single act. And I, just like Bottom, I have that courage and trust in me, myself. You might not have found out, but I always do believe me. When I go up to the public and give them a speech, I first calm myself by counting my heartbeats. It is sort of a magical spell that always work.

Nick Bottom has always been my roll model, who I always wanted to be. Not having an ass head, but because he doesn’t get nervous or embarrassed.

Although Nick Bottom and I are very same, there’s a difference. The difference is that he has an ass head and I have an attractive face. Every when Bottom comes near anyone, they are disgust and panic. After having an ass head, he feels lonely and ugly, but on the other hand, I have a great face.

Look Up The Sky: Book Thief Persuasive Monologue Speech

March 24th, 2016

Markus Zusak: The Book Thief

This is my persuasive speech, which has point of view of Hans Hubermann speaking to Liesel convincing Liesel not to say anything about Max.

Don’t ever say that! You can say that in our house, but you never say it on the street, at school, at the BDM, never! You hear me? He is a Jew. He can’t be around here?! He is a Jew! If he gets caught, I’m.. we are not fine. Max gets in danger, Rosa and I are gone from you and he already had saved my life and is me, who have to save him now…

Liesel, I apologize putting you and Rosa in danger… but when I see Max sick and ill, I just want him to be part of our family but he can’t. He is a rat in their society. A trash-eating rat. I never want him to be treated like that! Always face the ground, kicked and punched and drink, shower with spit. Max is a lovely man. So lovely that he would leave us if he finds us uncomfortable being with him. But… you know? I would never want him to leave me. Leave us. He isn’t our family, but more than just a friend.

Please Liesel, I want Max to be with us, and you with us too. If he gets caught, not only he is in danger, but us too Liesel, us too. I.. Rosa and I will never again stand next to you walking, talking and sometimes fight. But this whole thing to me… are great memories. I want, must protect these wonderful memories and in order to protect, I need you Liesel, you. If Rosa and I are gone, what are you going to do? I always ask these question to myself. How are you going to live without us? Rudy? Frau Holtzapfel? Then who’s  gonna give you love? We want you here, our home, together. I love you.

But Liesel, I ought to save him, I’m sorry, but no matter how dangerous it takes and no matter how long I have to suffer, I would, no, I must save him. Liesel, to you, I don’t know. You would probably think he is just a stranger, but Liesel, that stranger is my hero. If it wasn’t him, I wouldn’t be here with you talking. I would have been up there (pointing upward) with other soldiers. And this is my opportunities to save him. What he had done to me. Saved my life. If he needs me, and he does now, I would go for him. I love you Liesel, I love you, and I will be here with you, with Max on my back. I promise we will be just like before, reading and laughing, but you need to promise me one thing. Please never say anything about Max outside.

Liesel, look up. The sky. Isn’t it beautiful? One day, lets all sit outside and enjoy the stars. And Max would be there, with us looking at the stars, clearing his mind from all the stress he’s faced. (laughter) I bet you, Liesel, you will be holding his hand. This day isn’t going to be soon, but I promise you Liesel, this day will come, and all you gotta do, is trust me and wait for me.

Propaganda poster: Bottoms Up!

March 14th, 2016

Photo on 3-14-16 at 10.50 AM #2

I have interpreted “Fear” as my propaganda technique, because the Japanese blood falling from the shot cup, it brings the attention to the american. My propaganda poster appeals to pathos, emotions, because the feeling the poster itself has its the great emotions of fear. Archetype used in this poster is the hero, the american, and encouraging people to join in U.S. and fight with them and be the “Hero”.  My design is drawn the way the “Hero” isn’t defined, which gives the audience mythical emotions who’s going to be the hero? and plant the mindset of they could be the one, the “Hero”. “Bottoms Up” and “Color’em Red” emphasis the definite victory or the trust in victory americans have. “Hero” holding the cup full of Japanese blood shows the over control of them and which gives more entertainments to the audience.

Animal Rights: Yulin Dog Meat Festival

December 12th, 2015

In America, 99percent of people raise pets and 70percent thinks pets as one of their family. However, in Yulin, Chinese people opened a dog meat festival where foreigners buy dogs and cook it alive. Now in China, eating pets are the cultural event and it is not against any law. But eating pets turned into a big issue because the dog meat seller started to kidnap pets. That kidnapped pets were caged in a small cage with 20 others pets. They weren’t fed properly and so many stolen household pets were starved to death.

Comic 3

These three different short comics are all based on my personal curiosity. Not only from my curiosity but also are based on my experiments. Theme are shown in my comics, which we learned in English.

My first comic is showing the students’ life in home. Parents have high expectation which students, us, might be struggling with. Still, too low expectation from our parents doesn’t mean we could do better, but if our parents want perfect grade, we struggle. Sometimes, over love is hurtful to us.

Second comic is based on my curiosity which is in the future there has one pill that could make us see through peoples’ minds. Many parents act strong and happy but they all have feelings and they all have time when they are upset. However, parents don’t show that because they only want us, children, to see happy, positive things. Also we have time when we are upset but don’t want to tell parents. Then we usually cry quietly in the room and act like nothing had happened. But with this pill, we could read others’ minds anytime. If you understand others, others would understand you.

Third comic represents the unfairness in this world. This story wasn’t my own idea but I drew it just to share with others. This story came from the real situation. The story goes like this: One man walking down the street, heard the sound of woman screaming from the dark. Man ran up to where the woman scream came from and saw other man trying to rape her. That man fought against the other man who was trying to rape a woman and won. Woman ran away and two men were there on the dark. Man who was trying to rape woman called the police and told the police that he got assaulted by one man. Man who protected a woman explained to police that he was trying to save the woman but there was no proof. Woman already ran away and there was no one to support. Man who saved woman had to pay money to the other man who tried to rape woman. In real life, there is no hero but only has criminals.

Lennie’s Interview and Rationale

November 16th, 2015

I saw the movie about one guy, who was mentally issued when he was a baby. Reason why I am telling the story of “Dumb” man is because when we say someone is “dumb” it usually means that person can’t live without extra care. But him, he tried his best to along with other kids. Though Lennie, Steinback represents the people who need extra care. The “Dumb” man and Lennie had in common that the “Dumb” man only knew to run and Lennie only knew how to squeeze. What I am trying to get from the movie is that we call “Dumb people” has feelings and every second they are trying to survive. I will use Quicktime to record the interview, but only the voice.

“’I am a good skinner. I can rassel grain bags, drive a cultivator. I can do anything.”’ All of his preferred job requires strength, which shows that Lennie is strong as bull. However, he was treated poorly because he was too stupid to think and usually does bad things. When he talks about his dream, he enjoys imagining just like what little kids would do when they think about their dreams. He, Lennie, love George so much that he said, “’I could go off in the hills there. Some place I’d fine a cave.”’ George is Lennie’s everything. George is Lennie’s parent. Lennie obey him, love him and respect him just like other little kids. Reason why I am kept mentioning “little kids” is because Lennie is a little kid even though he is huge and strong as bull. He needs extra hands to take care of him.

“’ No. After then when she died…um… people die an’ no food an’ no money to stay there so we decided to leave.”’ People at the time didn’t know when people die from the starvation was called the great depression. They did know they were starving and they needed to move out from the country and get jobs in order not to die from the hunger. Lennie and George represented the migrant workers, who move out from their country to find the jobs. “’ Is working in ranch your first job?’ We worked in the weed before.”’ Lennie explains to the Interviewer that they’ve worked in different places, which shows the evidence of the great depression. Great depression effected the migrant workers, Lennie and George, because of great depression lose jobs and had to work in many different places.

An analysis of Dorothea Lange’s photos

October 27th, 2015

Notice that in the background, half of the field is empty, which could infer that the photo was taken during a time when the farmer didn’t have enough money to plants crops on all of his land. Also, there are no machines in the picture, you see humans doing all of the labor. This could be before machinery such as tractors were invented, or due to the farmer not having enough money to purchase the expensive agricultural equipment. The focal point that captured my attention was two children and a woman in the field. We could understand it in different ways. One is that two children have nowhere to stay so had to follow their parent to the farm or two kids were looking happy spending time with their parent. From my point of view, they seem fairly happy and enjoying what they are doing.

Rationale and Poem

October 11th, 2015

My poem is based on one question, “Did gun killed him or did shooter killed him?” I write the poem from my thoughts about guns and the murderers and asking whose fault is it. People always blame others for their own mistakes and always repeat the same mistakes. My theme shown throughout my poem is that people don’t admit their faults and would continue to do it.

I used metaphor comparing the guns and the bad words we spit to show how we make injures and how we are being the killer, but never admit our faults. “We say its them/ they say it’s us/ Both blame each other/ like four years old blaming their friend” (16-19). This simile represents how we act when we made mistakes, blaming on others to get away from trouble like what four years old do. In this line “four years old” represents us and the reason I chose four years old is because age of four when they could eat by themselves, walk and start to communicate, but yet they don’t know how to respect and admit their faults. Some negative words such as “cruel, ruthless, kill, damaging” would develop the mood in violent way and would develop my theme.

Who is the Killer?

Some say guns are cruel.

Some say those who use guns are ruthless.

Some say both are evil.

Who is right and who is wrong?

Murderers use guns as we spit bad words

Those words could kill

Make injuries

And have terrifying results.

What is true and what is false?

Some say words are damaging

Some say those who use destructive words are bad

Some say both

Are evil.

Are we the killer?

Or are they the killer?

We say it’s them.

They say it’s us.

Both blame each other,

Like four year olds blaming their friends.
