Polymer Journal Entry 4

Our group was assigned to make a polymer that can be used as a sound insulator and we decided to make one for high heels. Our product name is ” High Heels Maketh Manners” because it is for high heels and the “Maketh” part is from a quote in the movie,”Kingsmen” according to Christina. It was not easy to make a sound insulator for high heels because high heels tend to have very pointy heels and for the polymer to reduce the sound it make it must have enough tension to hold aganist the heel.

We had many trials and experiments to figure out the best way to make a polymer that can be used for high heels. Our first polymer was made using  15ml of borax, 15ml of liquid glue  and 7ml of water. The first polymer we created failed because the amount of borax was too much and made the polymer ummoldable. Also it was too weak and was easily poked through which means it probably can not withstand the sharp point of a high heel.

After  realizing  that using both Borax and Glue with huge amounts just cause the polymer to become unmoldable and too sticky. So  our group decided to create the second polymer mixing Super Slime with Boogers added PVA solution and Guar gum. We added Guar gum to put less tension and make the polymer more rubbery. Because it takes a long time to create the booger and the super slime, me and Sharon worked making the booger While Christina focused on making a Super Slim. The materials used to create the Boogers were 15ml of liquid starch and 13ml of Glue. The Super slime was made using 20ml of PVA solution and 4ml of Borax. we’ve added 3g of liquid glue, again, because the polymer has to stick onto the high heel.

We made our final polymer using  p 20ml of 1.5g of Guar Gum ,PVA solution ,4ml of Borax, 15ml of Liquid Starchand 15g of Glue. Our semi final polymer worked successfully because although it did not entirely cover up the sound that high heel make, it did reduce it and because of it I think our group made a successful sound insulator polymer.

Tough Battles For Survival

Aron Ralston is a very athletic man who likes to go on outdoor adventures. He considers the great outdoors his second home. Aron decides to go for a trip along the Blue John Canyon, and because he had past experiences with rough trips, he is very confident that he will able to travel safely through a path that is not meant for tourists. Considering himself a professional who does not need other people, he went on this trip without telling anyone where he was heading. Aron was arrogant and was careless of the danger the canyon possessed and fell through a crevice with a small boulder. He had no damage received by the fall but the boulder had pinned his arm against the crevice wall. He does not panic and quickly opens his bag to get his knife to move the boulder by chipping away at it as an attempt to get his wedged hand free. It seems as though the knife is working when Aron sees that his knife is the one that is wearing out against the strong boulder. Realizing the danger of his situation, Aron thinks of alerting someone to rescue him. He had met several tourists called Kristi and Megan, two women who he met in the same path and have become friends with. However, as time goes on He realizes that no one is probably going to know he is stuck at the canyon wall and also that he is running out food and water from his backpack. He starts to save his water and food and records himself to keep track of time. He deals with the boulder, the tough weather and the desperate hunger. He starts to run out of energy but does not give up. He says “I did get myself into this. Somehow, in some convoluted way, it’s what I’ve been looking for in my life. How else did I come to be here? We create our lives. I don’t fully understand why, but little by little I get that somehow I’ve wanted something like this to happen. I’ve been looking for adventure, and I’ve found it.” (Ralston,230) As he films himself he thinks about his family and realizes that he does nooot have time left. After some thought, Aron decides to cut his arm and uses his knife and force to break his arm than uses his other arm to get a rope out of his backpack. Then he throws it high and over the canyon wall and uses it to lift his body out of the canyon. He finds a tourist family and calls out for help and they gey the national park security for him who quickly sends a helicopter that will escort him to the hospital. In the helicopter Aron says, “How would I behave in a situation that caused me to summon the essence of my character? The tragedy inspired me to test myself. I wanted to reveal to myself who I was: the kind of person who died, or the kind of person who overcame circumstances to help himself and others” (Ralston,250)

Sounds of Struggle Against Nature

Frederic Chopin – Nocturne In E Flat Major, Op.9 No.2- The song matches the situation when Aron Ralston feels hopeless after seeing his knife can not cut away the rock that is pinning his arm.

Undertale: Megalovania – Metal Cover || RichaadEB – This intense song fits when Aron finally realizes that he can not escape unless he cuts his arm, and finally escapes from the rock boulder by using force and his knife to cut his arm.

Suspenseful background Music – BRINK – action instrumental Intense Dramatic Film Movie Soundtrack – The song basically explains the entire atmosphere of the story which is Aron struggle against nature to escape with his life at danger.

The Killers – Mr. Brightside- This song fits when Aron finally escapes and realizes he will be able to return to his family and get along with life again. The positive vibe that this song gives is very suitable with the ending of the book

Science Journal Entry #3

Our group was assigned to make a polymer that can be used as an sound insulator. However we changed to making a sound insulator polymer only for ‘High Heels’. We had multiple trials and experiments to figure out the best way to make a polymer that can be used for high heels.

We realized that using both Borax and Glue with huge amounts just cause the polymer to become unmoldable and too sticky.

Our group is planning on to decrease the amount of liquid starch and glue because we want our  polymer  to be able to withstand more tension and become  more rubbery. The characteristics we want for our polymer is to be waterproof, moldable and able to withstand the sharp point of the high and not get poked through easily. Because our second polymer was successful than the first one, we are planning on using a similar recipe for the semi final polmyer. We are planning on using 20ml of 1.5g of Guar Gum ,PVA solution ,4ml of Borax, 15ml of Liquid Starchand 15g of Glue for our semi final polymer.

Polymer Journal Entry #2

Our group learned through the several experiments we did by using many different kinds of recipe such as Gloop+Glue, Gloop+Solid Cornstarch ,Solid Cornstarch +Glue+Gloop+Water that it is quite a challenge to make a polymer that was moldable and only sticky on one side so that it can attach to the high heel but not stick to the ground. We tried adding more water to make the polymer soft and smooth but it just got weaker and easily got destroyed instead. However, we were able to make a polymer that was a bit solid and not that rough by using solid cornstarch.

Our group should use more solid and glue with an appropriate amount of water so that the polymer can be solid while moldable. I think our group has to make only a few changes to our original recipe to create the polymer we want.

Hasty attempt after another… and Finally Acceptance

Have you ever gotten stuck in a place where it is extremely hard to get out? Mountaineer Aron Ralston was enjoying his bike trip at Canyonlands National Park. He had met and befriended Kristi and Megan, who were also Mountaineers like him.

After swimming with his two new friends, Aron went separate ways with the two woman and continued his journey throughout the canyon through a path that was not meant for travelers. Although in the beginning of this book there are some people involved, the main conflict in the book is not human but nature. Aron falls down a narrow canyon while climbing and falls with a boulder pinning his arm against the canyon wall. Aron uses tools from his backpack to  remove the boulder but fails. He  continues searching for signs of human activity and calls for help before he realizes that he is alone. He starts to record all the events happening on his camera to keep track of date and time and attempts to break the boulder using  his small yet powerful pocket knife to to free his trapped arm. Because he knows this is going to take a long time, he saves and checks the amount of food and water he has to survive.

After several hours of chipping away parts of the boulder to which he finds is futile, he attempts to move the boulder by setting up a pulley systemusing his climbing rope, in combination with his body strength. However, the boulder aws too heavy and Aron failed to remove it. After a few pathetic attempts at escape, Aron acknowledges the fact that he can not escape this rock in an instant and says “It’s me. I chose this. I chose all of this — this rock has been waiting for me my entire life. I’ve been moving towards it my whole life.” (Ralston, 168)

After being trapped for quite some time, Aron realizes that he cannot survive for long and uses his knowledge and power to break the radius and ulna bones and escapes, and make it back to civilization. He uses his pocket knife to break into his skin with force, ,  and using science  cuts off his arm. He then quickly took a picture of the boulder that trapped him. With mighty effort, Aron makes his way out of the canyon using his other arm and joyfully drinks rainwater from a small pond. As he realizes that he has survived with great luck and effort, he says “dum spiro, spero -Part of the official state motto of South Carolina. Literally, “While I breathe, I hope” Or more loosely, “Where there is life, there is hope”.(Ralston,201)

And the conflict is solved as Aron Ralston meet a family who alerts the national park authorities of Ralston’s situation, and a helicopter is sent to bring  him to the hospital. Ralston is saved, and taken to a hospital, where he recovers. He is finally safe and despite what happened, continues his hobbies of climbing canyons and mountains and starts a family on his own.

Below are some pictures of the real place and Aron Ralston himself.

Polymer Journal Entry #2

Our group mixed water with Borx and added glue to produce our first polymer.
We used 7ml of water,7ml of Borax and 7ml of Glue to create the polymer.

We also used some food coloring to put color into the polymer. We succeeded putting color into the polymer but failed to make it strong enough to withstand the pointy part of the high heel. We decided to put glue on one side so that we can attach it to the high heel and add Borax to the other side where it meets the ground to make it stronger. Our first attempt at making a prototype sound insulator was a fail because it was not solid enough and did not stick well to an object. However, I think we will succeed if we put more appropriate amounts of materials next time.

Polymer Journal Entry 1

Polymer Journal Entry 1

The goal of our polymer is to create a sound insulator. Our group has decided to make a sound insulator that can prevent loud noise coming from high heels. This sound insulator is for people who want to wear high heels without the loud noise it makes. The sound insulator will be attached to the back part of the high heel and prevent the loud noise which can annoy some people. To be specific, the sound insulator will soften the sound of the high heel by covering the back part. This item will be useful when people wear high heels quiet places such as the library where people do not want to hear high heel sounds. Also it will help when people walk with high heels outside when raining because the sound insulator will be water-proof. Our main target audience are mostly women and possibly men who want wear high heels quietly. Our sound insulator is going to b rigid that will last for a long time. The polymer will be able to withstand severe temperatures. The polymer should last for a long time and be able to maintain its form for a long . These are the type of qualities and characteristics that our polymer sound insulator is going to have.
