This summer, I am determined to read a lot. My goal is to read for three hours every week during the holiday.

Through a tough process, we finally created our end product – The Impeccable Glue. To reach this, we had to first brainstorm what we wanted our product to do and it’s characteristics. When we were first designing our polymer, we decided that the end product should be moldable, a bit sticky and harden overnight. We all received a sheet of paper, with the information about all the different characteristics each material contributes. I had picked corn starch because I wanted something less watery. I picked PVA solution because I wanted something sticky. Another thing I chose was liquid starch to add a little bit of liquids to the prototype. The last thing I chose was guar gum, to add a bit of elasticity to the polymer. When I was making all of the different prototypes, I realized that making a polymer with all of those characteristics was hard. I had tried a few different prototypes and had then turn out too slimy, too sticky, too bouncy. Sometimes it would be perfect; however, overnight it would harden and break.
While making the different prototypes, I learnt what ratio of ingredients I would need in order to make the polymer a certain way. I learned that too much liquid starch causes a much slimier polymer, so you need to add more PVA solution and around the same amount of corn starch to create a sticky moldable polymer. I also discovered that when making the guar gum, the water and guar gum just weren’t mixing properly so it didn’t mix in well with the polymer. So instead we would add dry guar gum straight to our polymer. It mixed way better and worked really well.
On presentation day, I learned that most polymers won’t turn out how you want them to. Sometimes something unexpected will happen and surprise you. Also you can’t always have all the characteristics you want in a polymer, sometimes you have to compromise. But overall, the experience was great and our polymer ended up doing what it was supposed to.

Murder of the Doctor is the talk of the town for a few days. Suspicion sits saliently like toxic fumes resting above Sawyer’s town. In the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, the rising action and climax bring the heat. Muff Potter and Injun Joe were the only people who were known to be there that night. Nobody thought that Huckleberry and Tom were sitting silently in the shadows. They saw Injun Joe murder the poor Doctor, but everyone put the blame on Muff when they found his knife, the knife that killed the Doctor. Though the accusations were false, he gets sent to prison. At the trial, Tom cannot stand the fact that an innocent man is suffering for the nefarious act performed by Injun Joe. Filled with confidence, he tells the story of what he saw on the night of the murder. While Sawyer speaks, Joe cleverly escapes the courtroom. Tom, fearful and scared, worries that Joe would murder him. Nothing happens for a few days, and Tom soon forgets about all his concerns. A few nights later, Tom and Huck are hunting for treasure, when a disguised Injun Joe catches their eye. Under his arm is a chest of money which the boys are keen to find. The next day, Becky’s parents arrange a picnic for all the young kids in town. When all the kids headed back from exploring the cave near the river, Tom and Becky never made it back. The two kids lost inside the cave soon discover Injun Joe was also inside the same cave. Terror strikes through the two, how would they get back?
In my series of tweets, I was hoping to portray the desperateness in the kids voice. I hoped to portray the sense of two kids lost in a cave then discovering they were with a murderer. It follows the story line of Tom and Becky first getting into the cave, then getting lost. Another tweet describes discovering Injun Joe was hiding out in the cave. After all that trauma, the tweets continue with Tom and Becky tweeting together, praying for the best.
With the final adjustments of the polymer, it is beginning to work well with our design goal. Getting to the point of the finished project was harder than expected, lots of surprises came along the way.
My first prototype was a absolute failure. The turnout was a green clear liquid that was like jelly. On the inside, there were clumps of corn starch and guar gum. On the outside, everything was very runny. Making this prototype, I first added 15 mL of liquid starch into a small cup. After that i added four drops of green food dye. Once mixed all the way through I added seven mL of PVA and then 3 grams of cornstarch. After I mixed it all together, I soon came to the conclusion that my liquid starch to PVA solution and cornstarch was completely off. I know that because when I added in the PVA, the jello wasn’t forming properly, and it ended up as much more liquid. I had also added them in the wrong order causing the clumps to form. The result was a super slimy, not very sticky, jelly substance. The results for the blob and hang test were what I was hoping for, they lasted a very long time and stayed molded. However with the bounce test, it bounced up approx. two inches off the table.
After tweaking the procedure, my second prototype was a success. This time I first added 5mL of liquid starch, then only three drops of food coloring all in a plastic cup. After that I added 10mL of PVA solution followed by 1.7 grams of cornstarch. Before I added the guar gum, the polymer was very sticky and stringy. It wasn’t the texture I was hoping for; however, after the guar gum was added, it became much more elastic. It still contained its stickiness, but it was less extreme and easily molded. With the tests, the polymer had no bounce at all, took 47 seconds in the hang test, and 1 minute and 21 seconds in the blob test. To test it out, I stuck it onto a metal water bottle, and it stayed molded without dripping for five minutes before we had to take it off

For our project, we are making a polymer that can protect phone screens from breaking. For that, I feel as if the Super Slime’s bounciness combined with Boogers stickiness and ability to stay molded will form a great base. I also think that Gloop’s capability to stay molded and not drip everywhere was a good characteristic to include in our polymer. To test the strength of our polymer, I was thinking about doing the blob test, hang test, and the bounce test. Doing these tests on our polymer will show if it is capable to withstand being on a phone and dropped. Then to test how well it can stick and stay molded to a phone, we will put it around a broken phone that is not in use and see the results over the course of 5 minutes. Then I will take the phone home, and overnight, see how well the case molded. To test if it is safe to drop, we will put it around a glass screen protector and drop it from different heights, recording all results.
Pirate ships and adventures off to islands along the Mississippi River, nobody could take the venture out of Tom and his loyal friends. In the book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, a story unfolds about the interesting life of Tom Sawyer. Tom lives with his foster Aunt Polly and a young boy named Sid. Packed with audacious adventures, Tom with his best friend Huckleberry Finn tackle adventures we only dream about. Living in a small town in America, many think it’s boring; however, Tom and Huckleberry don’t live by stereotypes. Through using certain phrases to describe their daily lives, we figure out the tone of the text.
Throughout the text, there was a very patent nostalgic tone. Growing up in the 21st century, lots of the ventures Tom Sawyer went on don’t occur in our daily lives today. But, because the sense of family and reckless fun was a common experience when we were younger. When reading the book, you feel like you’re reading an autobiography of an older man writing about his young self. Though Twain didn’t write this book based on his own childhood. It makes us remember the days when we thought we had met our soul mates at the ripe age of ten in Sunday school: “ ‘You only just tell a boy you won’t have ever have anybody but him, ever ever ever, and then you kiss and that’s all…’” (Twain 49). Remembering the first time we ever had a crush, confessing to them was the hardest part. Often the dialogue between two friends was very casual, the grammatical errors, the slang, the tone. Because of the contrast between the formal narrative text and the carefree dialogue made the whole thing very nostalgic. Another thing Mark Twain did to remind us of our childhood was using lines like “all the ‘rot’ [health magazines] contained about ventilation, and how to go to bed, and how to get up… was all gospel to her…” (75). We all experience a time in our childhood, when magazines become our best friends. Taking every quiz in the whole magazine until we find out if we’re a snicker doodle or a cinnamon bun, paying attention to those health magazines. We all felt at some point needing to listen, and really wanting to live healthier. Sometimes our parents would tell us everything in there was a lie, but kids never listen. He knows what buttons to push with trying to remind us of our childhood. This novel expresses many tones, but the main one would have is the nostalgic tone.
Another tone I found quite often was humor. Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer very satirically. Being only ten years of age, Tom Sawyer was young and immature. Filled with mischief, he envies Huckleberry Finn’s lazy lifestyle and freedom. As the novel progresses, we see Tom Sawyer mature, making better choices. How Twain narrates Sawyer growing up was bursting with humor. I found it all light-hearted especially when he uses phrases with words like “Auntie, I wish I hadn’t done it – but I didn’t think” (Twain 118). When I read this line, all I could think of was all the times I had ever said this exact phrase to my parents. He uses phrases like these sporadically throughout the book, making me chuckle at the immature excuses Tom makes to get out of trouble. Dripping with humor and nostalgia, Twain finds a good balance and writes a great childhood tale of two friends.
Overall, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, showed a great deal of nostalgia and humor. Reading the book with bring you immense joy and longing at the same time. Laughing at the satire used in certain scenes to describe the daft behaviors of immature kids, longing the feeling of foolish fun. Certain phrases are so important to setting the tone of the whole adventure.
For the Sugru project, my group has to design a polymer to prevent objects from breaking. Since we are living in an electronic era, I thought a common object that most people have are cellphones. Now, teens tend to use mobile phones instead of landlines to communicate with each other; however, because some teens are clumsy, they are more likely to drop their phones causing them to crack. Our group decided we wanted to prevent poor phone screens from cracking through a protective case.
The basic structure of this case will be a small rubber that you put on the corners of your phone, overnight it will mold and stay in shape. We were hoping to create something cushy and soft, but durable. It wouldn’t be bouncy because that would cause the phone to jump all over the place. Another characteristic is that once you take it off the phone, you can mold it into another shape for all phone shapes and sizes. It won’t be like other cases because this one will provide much more support than a plain plastic case, plus it would mold to your fingers so it wouldn’t drop as much.

Ping Pong Analysis
My parabola for this video was based on a Ping-Pong hit. The hit was a positive parabola because the vertex was a maximum and the parabola starts low and shoots up in the air and comes back down. Because the distance travelled was very small, I used centimeter units for tracking the a, b, and c digits. The A digit stands for the width of your parabola. For instance my parabola was slightly narrow, so the A digit was -349.2 centimeters or around -3.5 meters. The C digit stands for the y-intercept of your parabola. For my y-intercept, I didn’t start at the height of the table, but a bit taller. So the C digit was placed at 25.59 centimeters, or around 0.26 meters. The B digit stands for the vertex, or the highest point of the parabola. The shot I made for Ping-Pong was fairly high; therefore, my vertex was pretty tall. My B digit was set at 263.9 centimeters, or around 2.64 meters.
If you were to put that all together in a quadratic equation – which is the equation we will be using to solve the parabolic motion – it would be easier to round up the unit of measurement to meters. Leaving us with the digits -3.5, 0.26, and 2.64. The equation would end up being y = -3.5(t2) + 2.64(t) + 0.26. In this equation we can sub in the time from any part of the equation and find out the y point.
In our daily lives, there are many different examples of parabolic motions. For example when you drink water from a water fountain, when the water comes out, it squirts in a parabolic motion. The y-intercept being where the water is erupting from, the vertex is when the water reaches the highest point, and the A digit being however wide the parabola of the water is. Another very common example of parabolic motions in our daily lives is throwing and catching a ball. The motion it makes when it leaves your hand all the way until it reaches the other persons hand is also a parabolic motion; however, most parabolas in our lives are restricted. A restricted graph means there is a start and stop that unlike other graphs do end.

Currently in Boston, there is a revolution occurring around me. As a young man living through a revolution, my life is pretty great so far. King George the third is such a great leader; he is going to bring this country greatness. In the beginning of this year, I have begun to write journal entries about my life in America, to hopefully inform future readers about my lifestyle. How great life in America will be!

As always, all revolutions bring change. In the American Revolution, lots of things changed, but some also remain constant. There was a new government system, peace, and independence from the British crown. America started including presidents into their governing ways. The new government kept the continental congress; but because they no longer had one supreme ruler, they made a presidential organization. In the peace treaty between USA, France, and Britain, America received the east of the Mississippi River, south of Canada, and north of Florida from France. Finally, one of the most obvious changes was freedom from under the British rule; nonetheless, just because they had independence and freedom, didn’t mean everyone was equal and received all the rights human deserve. There were still social classes, where rich, white, religious men were put at the top of the food chain, and black people and women were on the bottom. Another racial rule that was kept the same was rights. Black people still didn’t receive their equal share of rights. Also, women didn’t get rights to freedom of speech until later on; but even modern day women in America still don’t have their full rights. Though the American Revolution brought some good change, some things will always remain the same.
