The main character in the book “Checkers” by John Marsden is a person full of different and interesting characteristics. She was first the “cool” kid at school but somehow ended up in the hospital.
She was very happy when she first heard that her dad got the contract and they could get anything for her birthday. That night her dad brought home checkers which essentially changed her life forever. She mentioned in the story that it was one of the happiest things to happen to her life. She also said that she was so happy when she saw checkers in the box.
Another thing is that she tries to be “cool” in front of her friends and be like the queen of something. That shows that she doesn’t want to be left out like some people at her school that is lonely. It also shows that she gets influenced by mass media. Quote:” What was it that they liked in me? If I’d lived in Lennon or Everett West and wore cloth from Reward, would I have stopped being there friend and instead become a guest on Oprah? ‘Teen With No Friends’… ‘The Teen Everyone Hates’… ‘From Teen Queen to Freak Queen’.” This quote shows that in their society everyone wants to be the “coolest” person and the narrator girl is thinking about the possibilities that she would not have become what she is right now, the teen queen.
She is very quite in groups. So when she said her first words. They expected her to be the next well trained patient that they will show other doctors. She realized that in her head and one day, one of the doctors used science to force her to say what was the reason she got in here.
In conclusion, the main character in checkers is very well developed. She has a jolly nature, and she also wants to fit in with the groups.
