How can war and terrorism wreck a friendship that easily just by it self. “Just switch your phone off. Leave him in the past where he belongs” (9, Alan Gibbons). Why would you want to treat your once best friend like that? What happened that made them not trust each other? 12 years of separation has changed the blood brothers. Religious discrimination and racism has caused them to take separate paths in life constantly fighting against each other.
Chris and Imran, are both protagonists in the book “An Act of Love” by Alan Gibbons. Their lives were very different then each other. These two people grew up together and was best friends. But something happened that made these two sworn blood brothers slowly break apart. Everything started separating once Chris moved houses. “My new home was a three-bed detached property on a quiet close.” (103 Gibbons) Chris had moved housed and became a soldier and goes to Afghanistan while Imran is involved with the Jihads, a group of Muslim extremists.
The book first starts 12 years later when Chris is about to receive a medal, but what he doesn’t know is that the terrorist group Jihad has a bomb around the area. Imran kept on trying to tell Chris that there is a bomb but he is half suspicious after what happened to their relationship. “I hold up my phone and he reads the message. Blood drains from his face.” (10 Gibbons). This was Chris’s father’s reaction after he reads the message Imran sent about the bomb. After this the book jumped back to 2000 and showed how these to blood brother’s relationships slowly get torn apart as they moved away from each other while flashing back to show what happened. “There was only one thing I could do. I turned and gave Link a shove. “Get off him!” … Link burst out laughing. “Want to play the hero, do you?” He butted me in the face.”. This quote showed how much the blood brothers used to care about each other. Through the tone of this passage, we can see that Chris is very caring and can do everything for his best friend.
These inseparable childhood brothers have fell apart slowly because of racism and terrorism. It is hard to imagine 2 really close friends have to face off against each other and stand the test. Chris and Imran, although different in color and race, both want their childhood back and back to being friends. At the end, it was their determination that saved themselves from any harm.
