Journal #4

Today was the presentation day, of course everything had went as it has expected. We moved around the engineering design cycle like this: Define, Our problem that we can solve through engineering is that we can really add something at the back of our polymer so it actually sticks strongly onto the shoe (sometimes it might slip off). Optimize, we tested it to put tape at the back of the polymer but it doesn’t stick on tape and double sided tape and it doesn’t even react to tape. We ran some test and at last we realized that our polymer was too dry so we ran it under water to wet it and it stuck onto the shoe perfectly, but it will always dry up again. Develop solution, so at last we decided to wet it a couple more times and to stick on the shoe, and finally it did not fall and it sticks onto the shoe quite well. When we are making the polymer we had been through many fail prototypes, we made six prototypes and all of them failed except for one, for example most of our failed prototypes were either too sticky or too dry or too wet but we didn’t give up and instead we kept going. I remembered that our goal was to not let the polymer fall when it’s placed in your socks or shoe and make sure that it feels comfortable, and it did work and we did reach our goal by doing more test, we made sure that the polymer wasn’t falling out of your shoe by putting more water onto the polymer to make sure its moistures. Our target audience did slightly change, instead of people who doesn’t want blisters, we chose GIRLS who doesn’t want blisters. Overall this experience was amazing and the final polymer turned out to great. But I wish we could have worked on the smell of it, some people smelled our polymer during the presentation and they knew it has been in someone’s shoe. But I was also really proud of our ad and I felt like it matched our target audience well.

Yunan- China’s Amazing Province

This is a keynote about Yunnan, a province in China. Yunnan is such an interesting place! In Yunnan it contains many different types of climates and weather in many different areas. The buildings in Yunnan are historical as well as modern, religious as well as special. I felt like the travelers would love it there at Yunnan, and that it should be a highly considered province to go in China.

Rat City

With human movement, people from all over China would soon take over Beijing. Beijing would have massive population growth, economy growth and politics growth. With only a limited apartments to live in, the rent price has gone up throughout the years. So there came the Rat City, an underground room for people who can not afford or wants to save money on the above ground apartments. Rat city is around 400-500RMB per month. Some people who lives in the Rat city are people from the country side, people who wants to save money, and farmers and many other people from other cities. They have 4-5 people in a room in normal apartments, but for Rat city there can only be 1-3 people living in a room. With human movement continuing, there would be more pollution caused since cars are driven more and really bad trafficking. Beijing will soon face the growth of population in a tremendous fast speed.

Overall we made six prototypes. But at last we chose the 5th prototype to be our final product, since the texture was firm and as well as soft and it was easy to go back into shape. The problem with prototype 5 was that sometimes it does not stick inside running shoes, but it does stick inside high heels. So for people who are wearing running shoes, we think it’s best to put the polymer in your socks to make it more comfortable. We thought if we really wanted to let the final prototype to stick at the back of the shoe, then we should add in a little sticker, so it could actually stick there. Our prototype does not stick on tape or double tape, so to put a sticker on that, would be a big challenge.

Our goal is to not let the polymer fall when it’s placed in your socks or shoe.

Now this is why we chose our 5th prototype to be our final prototype:

Prototype 1: it was really wet and really sticky and it easily stuck on tissues, and when we removed the tissue, some polymers are on the tissue (imagine if the tissue is a shoe). But it was firm and bouncy and really hard to break.

Prototype 2: It does not mix really well with food coloring, and overall it didn’t mixed really well. It was really stretchy, but at the same time gross and sticky. We did the tissue test where we put the polymer in the tissue to see if any polymer goes on to the tissue, and a lot of the polymer did go on the tissue, it was a really bad prototype.

Prototype 3: It was too sticky, it does not stay in shape, when we placed it on the table, it sinks down. It was some how similar to prototype 1.

Prototype 4: Very similar texture to a mixture of water and corn starch, but thicker, it does not stay in place properly, turns from solid to liquid, and it was really useless. It was like oobleck.

Prototype 5: It was firm, flexible and really easy to go back into shape. After drying the prototype it was no longer watery or sticky, so it was the right prototype to use.

Prototype 6: It was not really firm, does not stay in shape, and it is too sticky. It was almost like a cookie mix and a big flour dough.

After all you can clearly see that prototype 5 is the best one because it’s not disgusting and we didn’t have any issues with prototype 5. To get to this idea of prototype 5, we learnt from our mistakes from the previous prototypes and we corrected them on newer prototypes.

Journal 2

Me and my partners did 6 different testing polymers.

For our first test polymer prototype, we used 1cm of glue, 13mL of borax, 7mL of water, 10mL of PVA solution and food coloring (optional). We realized that we put too much glue and PVA solution, so it became really sticky and it broke really quickly. But the good thing about our prototype one was that it was stretchy and it could totally stay in place. It was more like gloop but sticky like boogers. (it also bounced really high) We wish for our next prototype to be less sticky (less glue), less wet (less water), but we want to keep the bounciness

For our second polymer prototype, we used 1 spoonful of glue, 10mL of borax, 5mL of water, 10mL of PVA solution, 10mL laundry starch, (Optional) Food coloring. The result of these ingredients mixed together resulted the prototype to be like super slime. We added PVA which is the ingredient to make super slime and that resulted it to be transparent and like super slime. It also sticks on paper, and ones it sticks on paper it’s hard to take it off, and I wouldn’t wear that in my shoe. This prototype also didn’t really mix that well, the glue was stuck out and it looked horrible. It’s very sticky and also really gross. We decided to remove laundry starch from our third prototype because laundry starch didn’t help at all and there was no effect of the laundry starch, it just gave us more liquid and made the second prototype worst.

For our third prototype, we used 1cm of glue, 10mL of borax, 5mL of water, 10mL of PVA solution, 2 spoons of corn starch, (Optional) Food coloring. These ingredients mixed together caused the texture to be like boogers and gloop. It was too sticky and really similar to prototype one. The problem is that this prototype does not stay in shape and it sinks onto the table. We added corn starch this time because we wanted to know what corn starch could do. Corn starch made this prototype more firm and made the color lighter.

For prototype four, we used 10mL water, 5 spoons of corn starch, 10mL of borax. We wanted to see what will happen if we added corn starch instead of PVA. Anyways, the corn starch and the borax mixed together made a cookie dough kind of texture, it was too soft but it was easy to shape. But this happens to be our worst prototype because it was too soft and it’s too easy to break.

For prototype 5 we used 1cm of glue, 10mL of borax,10mL of water, 1 spoonful of corn starch, (Optional) Food coloring. Cornstarch and water makes oobleck and borax, glue and water makes gloop. The texture of this prototype is firm (from the cornstarch) and it is really flexible and really easy to shape, like gloop. The problem with this was with too much water it became too watery, but without water it was too sticky, so we decided to put prototype 5 aside to let it dry and to see what will happen. While prototype 5 was drying up inside a tissue, we decided to try prototype 6.

For prototype 6 we decided to stick with corn starch (since it makes the polymer really thick and strong). We used 1cm of glue, 10mL of borax, 10mL of water, 5mL of PVA solution, 3 spoonful of corn starch and (Optional) Food coloring. It was horrible, it was like the 4th prototype we did, it was a mess. We didn’t think that was a good prototype because it was not very firm, does not keep in shape and it is way too sticky to use. It was more towards oobleck since we added too much cornstarch. It also looked really gross, and close to our 4th

After finishing our 6th prototype we went back and had a look at prototype 5. Prototype 5 had been dried up and it was really firm and not so sticky or water at all. We liked prototype 5 very much and decided that it would be our final product. Me, Jeehye and Livi had decided to bring home prototype 5 and put one outside in the sun and put one in the freezer to see what will happen. As a result, if you put the polymer outside, it hardens and breaks easily and it wasn’t as good as putting it inside. Jeehye put the polymer in the freezer, when she took it out, it was still bendable, but it became hard and super cold. So we thought the one that wasn’t put in the sun or in the freezer was the best.
