The Angel’s Factory

By Terence Blacker

I am reading the book The Angel’s Factory by Terence Blacker, I am focusing on analyzing the setting of the fiction. My text is explaining what is the setting and how it establishes the mood or act as a symbol.

Describe the Setting:

This setting takes place in the USA. “We swam and watched dolphins and toured a studio in Hollywood. We paid our annual visit to Donald, Mickey, and Goofy at Disneyland” (Page 25 Paragraph 1) and “We go to California every summer” (Page 5 Paragraph 9) support that the main character lives in America and the main events took place in there. In specific, the background of the story occurs in the character’s school and home because the main character is a 12 years old student and the main conflict began with their family. The timeline is in the 21st century because the environment looks similar with now. “As soon as we entered the hall, he asked to see my dad’s computer” (Page 3 Paragraph 1) proves that the events took place after the late 20th century which led computer universalize and “A radio was playing, with some discussion over a big political meeting that was taking place in London the following month.” (Page 1 paragraph 3) turns out that the radio is still existing in the era of the story. Specifically, “The end of the summer term was approaching” (Page 20 Paragraph 1), explains the story probably took place in the fall in the year.

How does the setting affect the mood of the story:

The setting constructs the social community around the main character so it affected the mood of the story. The setting happened in the school and family, which make both “family” and “school” as two major social community in the novel. It results in two different moods of the story. The mood in the family is serious and repeating, the character usually talked stressfully like “It was a good holiday, it was a fine holiday, it was always a fine holiday when we were in Santa Barbara.” (Page 25 Paragraph 1) And outside the family, the character said that “As we made our way to the house, I tried to explain to Gip that I wasn’t exactly being serious.” (Page 3 Paragraph 1) The monologue is fluent and normal.

In conclusion, the setting affected the mood of the story by time and place and the perspective of the character in the book.

Found Poem: “The Monkey’s Paw”

This found poem was created with the words of William W. Jacobs, In the story “Monkey’s Paw” by Tony.

Explanation:

This paragraph talks about the setting (the home where White’s family lives in). “Small living room” shows the family isn’t very rich and “night cold and wet” shows they live in a wet cold place. “Mr white distract his son’s attention, his son, concentrating on the chessboard.” Shows the characterization of Mr White and Herbert. Mr. White is thoughtful because he uses strategies to distract his son’s attention. Herbert is intelligent because he realizes the strategies of Mr White and didn’t affect by it. “wet, isolated places is the worst” “only houses in the road are occupied.” Continue shows the lack of wealth of White’s family. The main event of this book is Sergeant Major Morris. He created the plot of the fiction. And the page follows shows that Mr White knows about Sergeant Major Morris and the Monkey’s paw a bit. That’s why I chose “guilty smile in his thin grey beard.”  “After three drinks, he began to talk.” represent Sergeant Major Morris drinks alcohol drinks. Because he confesses the story about the monkey’s paw. He actually didn’t want the White’s family contracts the monkey’s paw which would cause trouble. “What was that about a monkey’s paw” “‘Nothing worth hearing anyway’”. Maybe the end of the exposition, my chosen element of the friction. Because this two sentence starts to talk about the monkey’s paw, which brings this story to the plot. After this point, the story start turns into Rising action. I chose purple as the background colour because this is the colour of tragedy. That represents the story. And for highlight the poem, I chose the opposite colour of purple, yellow.

Explanation:

Mr White

Sergeant Major Morris,

The main event of this book is Sergeant Major Morris. He created the plot of the fiction. And the page follow shows that Mr. White knows about Sergeant Major Morris and the Monkey’s paw a bit. That’s why I chose guilty smile in his thin grey beard.

After three drinks

he began to talk.

I think Sergeant Major Morris probably drinks alcohol drinks. Because he confesses the story about the monkey’s paw. He actually didn’t want the White’s family contracts the monkey’s paw which would usually cause trouble.

What was that about a monkey’s paw

‘Nothing worth hearing anyway’.

This two sentence may be the end of exposition, my chosen element of the friction. Because this two sentence starts to talk about the monkey’s paw, which brings this story to the plot. After this point, the story start turns into Rising action.

The book I read in the winter holiday

I read a book named ‘The thirteenth floor’.

It’s talk about the main character Sam and his friend find a new video game. They play it and can’t leave it. The three of the Sam’s friend all goes to the final challenge but they all went crazy. Sam figure out the game and meet the person who create the games. That people tell Sam to stop bulling other people and tell other people stop bulling. Finally Sam went back to his home and have a normal life again.

The book was a really interesting book. It is a little bit scary in the front. But very interesting in the back.
