On Monday, January 7, I began Project Collisions with an egg drop. This design challenge was to drop a raw egg from a height of 5 meters without breaking it. A material list with items to purchase was provided. My first design was Use to balloons and strings on the top and put the egg in a balloon then put the newspaper on the balloon.

Then, working in a group, we decided to make a parachute and use the lines to connect with a new paper. Inside the newspaper, we have the egg.

As the egg was dropping, I am worried about can the parachute can hold the egg.

Our design was unsuccessful because the parachute is unattached with the egg and the egg fill down by itself. Next time, I would make the parachute bigger and the connection (egg and parachute) better.

Project Collisions is using the idea of drone delivery. During my research, I notice that there are lots of product that can be delivered by drones. I am interested in delivering food.

Through this project, I hope I can learn more about a drone delivering product and how can the problems be solved.

In Project Collisions, I am creating a system to deliver McDonald’s by drones. The drone will release the package from a height of up to 10 meters and my job as an engineer is to develop a solution so that the package is protected in its fall.

For Drop 0, a package with the dimensions of 20cm (height), 25cm (length), and 20cm (width) was dropped from a height of 5 meters. Below is a photograph of the package:

The package will hold McDonald’s Burgers, sides, and drinks. Inside, items are organized like this:

The purpose of Drop 0 is to get baseline data about our package. The group developed a testing procedure so that we can be consistent on how data is collected throughout the design cycle.

  1. Check if iPads are both recordings
  2. Check if anyone is near the target. If so, ask them to move
  3. Hold the box right above the target and drop
  4. Take the box to the group table
  5. Record observations of the box and put them on the data table
  6. Record needed information from video data on the table

During the drops, I noticed that our drop is very accurate. The following data was collected:

The average time it took for our package to fall the 5 meters was 1.45sec. Using LoggerPro, we plotted out the fall of the package.

For the first time, we dropped the box from 5 meters above the force plate. The box fell down in a straight vertical line and landed on the force plate but immediately it bounced up and the box fell apart.

A force plate at the bottom of the drop was used to collect data on the impact force of the package. Our group was very accurate in dropping the package. As a project metric for accuracy, we want our package to drop within a maximum of 1 meter away from the target.

The force on impact was 98 N. As a project metric, we decided to reduce the force by 20%, which is about 170 N.

Summary: Project Metrics

Our team has decided that the three most important criteria to design towards are:

  • Metric 1: No spills – Nothing in the box can be spill or break.
  • Metric 2: Low force – Keep the amount of force as low as possible.
  • Metric 3: Accuracy – Land within 1 meter of the target.

Our group is now building the first prototype. I hope that we can decrease the amount of force and keep a soft landing.

Reflection: The change that we faced is our group have three people and we come up with all three different ideas, so we have to collaborate to make three designs to one that we all agree on. Later, we overcome the problem and made an awesome habitat. I am very proud of my group overcoming so many challenges and we can collaborate all the time and had a fantastic exhibition.

  • My design is repeatable by another person because I show my work clearly.
  •  I realized that the data table (part of the investigative design) might have been an issuein my data collection because it’s too small and it’s not clear.
  • An improvement that I would make if doing this investigation again is to add more information to my data table. Also, I would like to complete the investigation by identifying all ten consent.

Teamwork: I think we did a good job collaborating. We can decide and create the floorplan for our characters. First, our group ended up with 2 finished designs and both were perfect. We overcame this challenge and decided on one. I really had a great time working with my teammates.

I notice that the data of the number of species are getting smaller and smaller. Today, there are no more insects. In January, we will return to the site again and I wonder if the insects are starting to come back.

What? So What?:

An issue we are facing today that will get worse with a growing population is air pollution.  When I was researching about the problems of today, I read a few articles about the need for fresh air. For example, in “Air pollution could kill 6.6 million people a year by 2050”,  it shows that air pollution can kill 6.6 million people per year by 2050. Also in “Air pollution could kill 6.6 million people a year by 2050”: it saids that if we don’t care about this problem, we can have a bad ending. So I think air will become a big factor in the lives of humans.

Now What?:

One thing I’ve started to do is use bikes to go out instead of using DiDi when is not needed. Also, I’ll make sure to  use less cars.

Earlier today:

Three urgent problems:

  1. Solve world hunger
  2. All people have houses
  3. All people get educated

Two questions for the future:

  1. Will all the robot have brains?
  2. Will the robot control humans?

One optimistic or pessimistic:

Optimistic.

Later on:

Looking back on today, I think all the topics are connected because you can’t live without any of those things.

I used to think that people getting water is easy or not that hard, but now I think that people don’t have the money or living in a poor place, they have to walk very far to get the dirty water that has many bacteria.

I think is a very real experience, because I realized what will happen in 2050.
