Dear Grade 5 Parents,
Puberty Week is almost here and we would like to share some of the resources that we will be using. We encourage parents to look through these materials to help guide the discussions you might have at home with your child. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have any comments or questions.
At the beginning of the week, students will receive one of the gender-specific handouts that are included in the links listed below. While topics for both genders will be covered in a co-ed fashion during the first few days of the week, students will only receive their gender-specific handout.
Girls and boys will be split into gender-based groups for the last two days of the week. We have found that it’s easier for many students to talk about puberty-related topics on these days.
The always.com website is a teacher resource that you also might find useful. It is produced by a company that makes feminine hygiene products and has some helpful tips and advice for girls and their parents.
The final links are for videos that we will share with the students throughout the week.

No more plastic straws!
During the past ASA session, ES Roots and Shoots students looked at different ways to reduce the amount of plastic we throw away each day. To help avoid the waste caused by plastic straws, they decided to sell stainless steel straws to ISB students at cost.
You will be able to buy the pack of 3 different stainless steel straws and a cleaning brush (as shown here) for 20 rmb during UES lunch time, the week we return from Chinese New Year. The cloth bag makes it easy to carry the straws around in a purse or backpack.
On Saturday March 10th, there is a Grade 5 ISAC Team Handball tournament at DSP (German Embassy School Beijing). We are hoping to send several 5th grade boys and girls teams. We would like your child to come and help us represent ISB! All levels of handball are welcome.
Boys: the tournament will start at 9:00am on Saturday morning and finish around 1:00/1:30pm.
Girls: the tournament will begin at 2:00pm and aim to finish around 5:00/5:30pm.
We will send out confirmed details as soon as the tournament schedule is set. We will have buses from ISB to take students to and from the venue.
Please email me on email@example.com if your child is able to attend the handball tournament by Friday March 2nd.
Go ISB Dragons!!

Grade 5 parents,
Please don’t forget about the talk we have scheduled for this Friday at 8:30 in the MPR. Dr. Andy Wang will speak about the physical and emotional changes children go through during puberty. Dr. Wang will be available to answer your questions after his presentation.
Hi Families! Next Tuesday, February 6 from 8:30-10:00 in the ES Cafeteria is the ES Math Parent Coffee. This session will offer a more in-depth look at what math looks like in an elementary classroom, introduce rich tasks, give an overview of the mathematical practices, and provide an opportunity for discussion. Teachers from several grade levels will be part of the presentation. We hope you can attend!
