The Unicorn Cake

During Ignite Week, I made a unicorn cake from scratch and wow, I really had such a great time and I learned to much! Here are my answers to the questions:

What did you create?

I created a beach themed unicorn cake (two layers of white cake with butter cream frosting and fondant details).

What were your successes?

Some successes were making the fondant and frosting. At first, making the fondant was really hard because the marshmellows were very very sticky, but after a while of kneading and adding cornstarch+powdered sugar it turned into a very soft fondant, which I used for many of my decorations. The frosting over all was really easy to make.

What were your challenges?

Some challenges were making the cake batter, and baking it. The ingredients that were needed for the cake batter ran out very quickly, which made making the cake batter a little more difficult. The baking part, though, was overall fine except that for some reason the oven wouldn’t cook the center of the cake properly, which resulted as an over cooked edge in order for the center to be fully cooked.

How did you grow in the chosen L21 focus area in this project? What evidence can you share of that?

One area that I improved is the “My idea is new, unique, surprising; shows a personal touch,” because I wanted to make a unicorn cake like I saw online, but I thought to make it more original. And instead of making it just original, I added a personal touch and made it a beach theme, because I like going to the beach during the summer.

What are some ways that the skill I learned during Ignite week would be of value to me in the future?

Some ways that the skill I learned during ignite week would be of value in the future, are during special occasions, I don’t need to go out and buy a cake, instead I can make one myself and it will even cost less. During ignite week, there were tools that I learned how to use, and how to properly use them. In the future, if I will ever need to use those tools again I would know how to.

Upcycling Old Clothes into Pillows

During the ignite week, Callie, Sun Young and I made pillows out of old clothes. We are going to sell them and use the money to donate to a dog shelter or to an orphanage. I picked this ignite week project because I wanted to improve my sewing skills and donate anything to people or animals that need them. From this project, I learned that I need to learn patience. For example, when ripping of the clothes with the seem ripper, I took a whole period to do that and I was kind of frustrated at last. If I were to do this project again, I would try to get the materials ahead of time. Because, we had to wait for the cottons in the beginning.
