Driving Question:

This whole activity really helped me understand and go deeper into understanding the problem of pollution, and really finding the root cause, which also led me into a better understanding of the threat plastic poses to our planet. While doing this project, a lot of my time was spent trying to find surprising and different pieces of evidence that could really contrast my project from others, and have a longer-lasting impact on my audience, which would be better for the project overall. This led me to find, not only the regular data you could find, but also different, surprising more factual pieces of evidence/data that really helped me learn and find out more. A topic that really challenged me was the essay we had to write on pollution, and our ideas to reduce pollution levels. That activity really helped me to push my regular boundaries of thinking, which allowed me to explore different ideas that I couldn’t necessarily have thought of before, such as helping to see different perspectives to the same problem, which in the end, made my presentation better, and more thoughtful, which allowed me to explore both sides of the argument. The main presentation in the end also built on that challenge, and helped me think out of the box.

Project Driving Question(s):How can we use evidence to make a positive impact on Beijing? How can we make a positive impact on Beijing?

Your reflection: I decided to make an informational video, to teach and educate people on how plastic pollution is affecting the environment. I learned many surprising facts about plastic pollution, and I have included those in the video to capture the watchers attention. Something that challenged my thinking is how I could put the video together in an appealing way so that the watcher would want to keep on watching.

Project Driving Question(s): How can we use evidence to make a positive impact on Beijing.
My reflection: I used to think that the water and air pollution in Beijing is not very bad and serious, but during science, humanities, and math I learned that the water and air pollution in Beijing is very bad and serious. At first we went to Wenyu river to collect garbage in science to see what garbage the neighborhood usually throws away or use. Then we went to Wenyu river again to collect water samples to test the water quality, and when the result came out, the water was deadly which surprised me because I didn’t’t expect it to be that bad and that made me realize that the water pollution is very serious. Then we wrote an essay about either air pollution or water pollution and before the essay, I researched a bunch of evidence to support my claim and from the evidence, when rainfall flows through plastic garbage pile water would absorb water soluble compounds which then together it would create a harmful stew called leachate, which would goes in streams, soils and our underground water which might harm the ecosystem, wildlife and even us. Which I used for my presentation so the evidence would be easy to get also, from that it make me more sure that the water pollution in Beijing is really bad and serious. Then in math, we did the AQI analysis for Beijing and that helped me realized how bad the air pollution in Beijing is. In this project the thing that challenged my thinking is that why would the water pollution and air pollution in Beijing is so bad and that other countries like America would be better.

Ban the Bottle

Using evidence, I made a positive effect on the environment. From this project, I learned a lot about what the word ‘pollution’ means. I have experienced what what plastic can cause and destroy our beautiful environment. For example, when we traveled to the Wenyu River, what I saw was nothing I have thought of before- the damage that plastic pollution can do to the nature, the amount of plastic just dumped onto the banks and imagining what 3 billion tons of plastic can do to the planet. That was only the amount of plastic created in a year. Starting from there I realized that it is very important to raise awareness of this problem and yet let everyone know what is going on starting small. I want to ban the single use plastic in the cafeteria by encouraging students to bring their own water bottles and the plastic cups in the cafeteria to be replaced by reusable ones. I want everyone to feel the same way I do and contribute to the world and make the world a better place and into the paradise it used to be! I was challenged by how to come up with a successful plan and not only it had to be good but also achievable. Overall, I think all the subjects came to use in this project and I certainly know a lot more than what I used to know about plastic pollution and what the impacts are.

Plastic pollution

We first went to the Wenyu River to collect trash to get an idea of pollution and how to construct a graph. Then in humanities we wrote persuasive essay on pollution. Next in science, we tested the drinking water and the water samples from the Weny River and compared them. Later, we researched on pollution for the presentation. Soon, we had to make an impact that would reduce pollution. Finally, we made a presentation on the pollution and what we did to improve it. Down below is my reflection.

This activity helped me to understand deeper about how pollution is harming our nature and what is causing pollution and what is pollution. At first, we went to the Wen Yu river to collect trash and then sort out the garbage, then we used the data that we collected to creates a graph to show the amount of each kind of the garbage. Then we went again, to get the water of Wen Yu river to test and get the data of the water that got polluted. When I saw the result of the water sample, I was surprised, the sample was so bad! Second, we needed to write an argument essay, so the first thing we needed to is to collect notes. When I was collecting my notes, I found out many things about pollution, like, rain absorbs water-soluble, compounds it contains some are highly toxic create a harmful stew, leachate. Then when we were writing the essay, we had to make a claim and then get the evidence to support the claim, I think the writing helped me to know how to connect claims and evidence. After that, we started our final project, I did some bookmarks to support the PowerPoint, but at last I realized that the ink is made out of plastic, I also did a cardboard box to support the PowerPoint, so I used the notes that I took for my writing, so that it was really easy for me to collect my evidence. All thing was very fine when I was doing my project. Finally, when we were presenting it was all good, I got many suggestions so I think it was all good.

How can we effect Earth?

Project Description: The unit is about understanding and acting on the complex problem of one’s own ecological footprint. In essence, it’s about working to restore balance between human development and our natural environment. During the process of examining air and water quality, students learned principles of chemistry and environmental science. Students made use of mathematical principles to classify data and examined the interactions between factors such as weather, geography and population to better understand how humans impact their environment. They worked with primary and secondary resources in their research and developed argumentative writing skills to complete an action plan to communicate the information in a meaningful way. Student Reflection on Driving Question: Our first “mission” was to test the water qualities from different water. Bottled water, distilled water, tap water, and outdoor water are the kinds of water we are testing. For outdoor water, we chose the Wenyu River water. To collect the water from the river, I created an apparatus with another student. We first planned to create a pump, but we failed, so we made a well. But during the water collection, the apparatus accidently broke. However, the water we collected before the accident was enough. That was the only happy thing during this “mission”. After that, we tested the water sample we collected. It was really fun. The only sad thing was that I couldn’t understand the words Ms. Mo were using. In Humanities, Mr. Quezada let me write an essay about pollution, and I chose to write something about use less gas-powered vehicles. In the same week, the entire FA7 had to do a challenge—No Plastic Challenge. This challenge was about a week. I find out that it was so hard to live without plastic. Let’s continue on the pollution essay. During writing essay, I realized that finding evidences were easy, but finding reliable information were extremely hard because it was my first time finding reliable sources. After many time, I found out that most of the official website will usually have a “gov”. I finished my essay in 1 week. During Math class, I got my idea of my final project. We had once worked on AQI analyzing, and then I thought Beijing’s air quality is decreasing so I thought I should find out what is the main source of pollution and persuade others to deny it. After that event, we started our final project. This is what my project was about: I am trying to persuade others to use less gas-powered vehicles. This is important because there are 29,000 people died in the UK every year and the rate in China must be even higher. Also, gas-powered vehicles in China because Chinese population is increasing every year which means people needs more vehicles for traveling or moving. Another point is gas-powered vehicles produce CO, HC, CO2, and etc. These evidences show that gas-powered vehicles will be a really big problem to fix for Chinese government. Afterward, I read an article which argues that most of the countries are going to end gas-powered cars before 2100. The replacer will be electronic cars. In this way, there will be less sources of pollution. This project helped me by increasing my vocabulary and I learned that it is important to communicate with my teammates while I was creating the apparatus.

Stop Using One Use Plastic

The Project Impact Beijing question that we had to answer was “How can we use evidence to make an impact on Beijing?” My answer was:

I think that using evidence we can have a positive impact on Beijing, because if we show people that 100,000 animals are dying each year, and that those are the only ones that are found, then they can start to see how serious this is. If these people also see that all of the garbage goes into a landfill, and that we are contributing to water pollution, then they can see that this is a major issue. The evidence can be used against people, and to persuade them that this is a major issue, which is why we can use evidence to make a positive impact on Beijing.

Project Driving Question: How can we use evidence to make a positive impact on Beijing?

My Answer: I think we should ban materials that are made out of plastics, because it is ruining our environment. Evidence: “There are many animals killed from single-use plastics and plastics bags, so humans preparing for non-plastic bags.”, “About 44 percent of all seabirds eat plastic, apparently by mistake, sometimes with fatal effects. And 267 marine species are affected by plastic garbage—animals are known to swallow plastic bags, which resemble jellyfish in mid-ocean.” So I think we should ban plastic materials.
