Hi families! As usual, we have been busy busy in 5KH. But we can feel the energy, excitement, and sometimes anxiety about the end of the year. As a class we’ve been focusing on debating respectfully, supporting others and showing empathy, and thinking about our elementary legacy. Personally, I am starting to feel those end of year feelings where I have so much pride in what we’ve accomplished, excitement for the upcoming break, but some sadness that my time with this amazing class is drawing to a close.
In math we are continuing to work with solving problems in the Coordinate Plane. Students have made their own pictures, analyzed data to find rules for lines, discussed slopes and intercepts, and discovered additive and multiplicative rules. It’s very cool and the students are enjoying getting a glimpse into algebra.
In reading we are researching around an ethical topic in small groups that will then be shared with the whole class. Ask your child what they’re studying!
In writing we are writing persuasive essays around the topic of whether chocolate milk should be banned in schools. For many students this has turned into a hotly debated topic. Ask your child what side they’re on and why!
In inquiry we are studying globalization and trade through various activities. We have played games, auctioned off items, discussed scarcity, and looked at interconnected systems. I love this unit because students have a lot of prior knowledge, questions, and several misconceptions about how the world works!
