Genius Hour Exhibition Thursday!

Hi families! On Thursday from 1:30-2:30 5KH will have their Genius Hour Exhibition in our classroom, room 3507 as well as the classroom across the hall, 3506. This is a celebration of recent personal inquiry projects the children have been competing. Stop by to check out our work, ask questions, and hear some ways 5KH has aimed to improve a community in this world. We hope you can make it!

End of Year Announcements

Hi families! As usual, we have been busy busy in 5KH. But we can feel the energy, excitement, and sometimes anxiety about the end of the year.  As a class we’ve been focusing on debating respectfully, supporting others and showing empathy, and thinking about our elementary legacy. Personally, I am starting to feel those end of year feelings where I have so much pride in what we’ve accomplished, excitement for the upcoming break, but some sadness that my time with this amazing class is drawing to a close.

In math we are continuing to work with solving problems in the Coordinate Plane. Students have made their own pictures, analyzed data to find rules for lines, discussed slopes and intercepts, and discovered additive and multiplicative rules. It’s very cool and the students are enjoying getting a glimpse into algebra.

In reading we are researching around an ethical topic in small groups that will then be shared with the whole class. Ask your child what they’re studying!

In writing we are writing persuasive essays around the topic of whether chocolate milk should be banned in schools. For many students this has turned into a hotly debated topic. Ask your child what side they’re on and why!

In inquiry we are studying globalization and trade through various activities. We have played games, auctioned off items, discussed scarcity, and looked at interconnected systems. I love this unit because students have a lot of prior knowledge, questions, and several misconceptions about how the world works!

We have a number of events and experiences coming up. Please check out the events below!

Thursday, June 7 1:30-2:30 5KH Genius hour Exhibition (all are welcome)

Thursday, June 7-Monday, June 11  Students will be able to eat in the MS Cafeteria, please make sure their lunch cards have money!

Tuesday, June 12 12:20-1:30(ish) 5KH Class Party! Please look for a message from Lisa Koh in the next few days. We will eat lunch, and have a (small) recognition of our students in 5KH!

Wednesday, June 13 5th Grade BBQ. This event is for 5th grade students and teachers only.

Thursday, June 14 Last day of school! This is a half day. Students will be signing yearbooks, celebrating together, honoring students moving on, and there will be an assembly in the morning.

Thank you, sincerely, for such a great year! Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or confusion!

Also, MAP Testing will take place May 9-11.

This week and next week we are ending our Math, Inquiry, Writing, and Reading units!

Our final unit for Inquiry is all about Economics and Trade. It is a fantastic unit where students will be exploring globalization. In our writing unit, students will be using what they learn in economics and trade to write a persuasive essay. In reading we will be reading about books that encourage advocacy and argument. Students will learn the craft moves authors use that make books effective. Our final unit of Math for Grade 5 is about Problem Solving on the Coordinate Plane. You can find the overview in the attachment below. G5M6_Eureka_Newsletters

Thank you!

Hi families! I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to come in and attend your child’s conference. It was so great to see the smiles and hear the students reflect on their growth this year as well as determine goals and next steps for the remainder of the year. I really enjoyed the time with each of you and your child. It is so clear how much support and encouragement our children get and I appreciate the positivity and attention that shone through each conference.

We’ve still got a final push for the rest of the year, but as I think the past few days have shone we’ve got a group of kiddos ready (or nearly ready) for middle school! Stay tuned for more exciting things coming up. As always, please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or comments.

If I don’t see you enjoy your spring break!

Homework and Student Led Conferences!

Hi Families! Just a quick update on what’s going on in 5KH.

Tomorrow students are turning in the fitness goal, plan, and reflection that they have been working on since January. This can be shared electronically or as a hard copy. Students also have a Math Packet due tomorrow. Tomorrow they will also get a math packet that they began in class that will help prepare them for the upcoming Module 4 Assessment on Monday. Students are not required to complete it but can use it as a guide.

Next week you will be sent a link to sing up your child for their Student Led Conference. Students LEAD these conferences to students and their parents should attend. Your child will be taking you through their growth and progress this year as well as show you their goals for the rest of the year. You should sign up for a 45 minute block. You will spend about 30 minutes exclusively with your child and I will join for 15 minutes to look at their Student as a Learner Reflection. However because of the independent nature of the conferences if your preferred time is taken just e-mail me your preferred time. We can have multiple conferences happening at a time. In fact, it is nice to have more than one conference at a time to add energy and a buzz to them room to decrease stress of the students.

Today we did our fitness test post assessment. I believe most students improved in at least one area of health. They have a lot to be proud of and hopefully are tired enough to get the full 9-10 hours they should get a night!

Thank you for your support of your child and please let me know if you have any questions!

Almost March!

Hi families! I hope you had a fantastic Chinese New Year holiday. It is always great to have the kiddos return with stories from break. Whether they were traveling or stayed in Beijing there is always something to share!

This week and next we near the end of our Math, Inquiry, Reading, and Writing units. These are critical areas for 5th grade and your child has been working with tenacity and perseverance. We are looking forward to showing our growth and progress and Student-Led Conferences March 26 and March 27.

Today we also begin our study of Human Growth and Development, also known as Puberty. So children might come home with some questions or lots to talk about. We will be focusing on how their body will change in adolescence physically and emotionally.

Thank you for your continued support of 5KH and your child!

Hi families! Apologies for posting this late in the evening but I wanted to make sure you were aware of a few upcoming announcements!

  • Thank you to everyone (parents and kiddos) who have sent e-mails and well wishes my way this week. For those that don’t know, I have been out after having appendicitis Monday evening and have been recovering from surgery. I will return to work on Monday. Receiving kind messages has been so touching. Thank you!
  • Tomorrow Friday, February 9 at 8:30 there is a Puberty talk for 5th Grade parents in the MPR. This will cover not only what we cover in Human Growth and Development but also offer strategies as your child approaches adolescence. The week we return from Chinese New Year kicks off Human Growth and Development week (Puberty Week).
  • On Monday, February 12 from 1:30-2:30 we will have our Genius Hour exhibition in the classroom to celebrate and share our Genius Hour projects. Please feel free to come by and see all our hard work and creativity over the past several weeks! This is drop in, you do not need to be there the full time. Your child also has a specific 40 minute block that they are presenting so please check with them to make sure you are there when they present.
  • Wednesday, February 14 is a regular Wednesday release schedule. In the afternoon there will be a Chinese New Year Parade.
  • Monday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 27 are student-led conferences. Sign ups will be coming after Chinese New Year.
