ALL-DAY REHEARSAL SATURDAY 26th MAY, 2018 (9:00 – 3:00pm)

WIZARD OF OZ ALL-DAY REHEARSAL                                                                   SATURDAY 26th MAY, 2018 (9:00 -3:00pm)                                                                            ALL STUDENTS MUST ATTEND!

Dear Parents,

We would like to remind you that there will be a rehearsal for The Wizard of Oz this Saturday, 26th May 09:00 – 3:00PM

It is essential that all children involved in the production attend, if they are to participate in the final performances.

This will be the first of only 2 opportunities for a full-length rehearsal in the theatre with all performers, musicians and singers on-stage, together. This is a large-scale production and a huge team effort.  If a child is absent, it not only impacts his/her own performance but also that of the other cast members who depend on each other.

Please note that these are closed rehearsals; so family members and friends are not permitted to attend. For this, we appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Please ensure that your child arrives in school between 08:30 and 08:50 at the latest, so that everyone is in the theatre, ready to start promptly at 09:00.

It is important that you, a driver or other adult pick up your child promptly at 3:00pm from the Main Entrance, unless indicated on the return slip that your child will return home unaccompanied. For the safety of all children, each child will need to check in with a teacher at the Main Entrance before leaving.

TICKETS:                                                                                                                          Families of cast members only, can obtain complimentary tickets on Saturday 26th May, (08:30 – 09:00AM and 2:30 – 3:00PM) from outside the theatre, for the performance on Friday, 1st June (4:00 – 5:30PM).  Complimentary tickets will also be available from the ES Office from Monday 28th May to Friday 1st June.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

  • All children will receive a Security Card with their name on tomorrow (Friday), which they must bring to the rehearsal on Saturday for security purposes. We will collect them from the children as they leave.
  • Please provide your child with a healthy snack and something to drink (no fizzy drinks, gum or candy please).
  • A complimentary pizza lunch + juice will be provided, or children can bring a packed lunch from home if they prefer. No food deliveries, please.
  • If your child would like to bring a book, homework or other quiet activity that’s fine. No electronic games, please.
  • Your child should continue to practice lines, if possible with an adult at home to ensure a confident and enjoyable performance.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you all to the performance on Friday 1st June (4:00 – 5:30PM).

Please help your child to learn their lines……

Dear Parents,

Today the majority of cast members were able to enjoy wearing their costumes for the first time, as we rehearsed the first few scenes of Act 1 in the theatre, together with the dancers.

However, we are concerned that at today’s rehearsal several cast members, were very unsure of, or had forgotten, their lines and cues (knowing when to say their lines).

It is essential that all cast members continue to practice their lines every day.  If it’s possible for someone at home to read the lines of the other characters, this will help your child know when to say his/her lines. It will also ensure that all children feel confident when they perform and really enjoy the experience.

On Thursday we will rehearse Act 2 so the cast should focus on learning the lines for Scenes 6 – 10 in the meantime. Next week we will rehearse Acts 1 and 2 and by then expect all children to know their lines and cues thoroughly.

It is very important too that all cast members know the lyrics to “Somewhere, Over the Rainbow” and “Ding-Dong the Witch is Dead.”  I have copies of both these songs in my room (2141).

Many thanks for your support and we look forward to welcoming you to the performance in just a few weeks’ time. You will shortly receive information about where and when tickets will be available for the show.

If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact either me (SNilsson@isb.bj.edu.cn) or Ms. Campbell (ccampbell@isb.bj.edu.cn )

A gentle reminder that your child should continue to regularly practice his/her lines at home with an adult, if possible. This will help build confidence and ensure that each child knows what to say and when.  Thank you for your continued support!

Script and Songs

Dear Parents,

Please help your child learn the lyrics to the two songs below – every child should have received a paper copy of them both.

Cast members with speaking roles should also have a copy of the final edited script below.  If your child does not have a copy of this, please remind him/her to come to my room (2141) where I have spare copies available.

How to Help Your Child Prepare for the Production and Important Dates

Dear Parents,

We hope that you and your children have had a wonderful vacation and that cast members will return with renewed energy to rehearsals, which will begin again this Tuesday and Thursday, 3:30pm – 4:30pm.

In the run-up to the production we are looking forward to these final few weeks, when we start to piece together the show like a giant jigsaw puzzle and add the music, songs and dances. In the meantime, costumes, props and scenery are being made and soon posters, tickets and T-shirts will be designed and produced.

PARENTS – WE NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE!

By now the children should have learned their lines and will rehearse without scripts, although they should still bring them to every rehearsal.  This will allow us to block the scenes and work with cast members on developing their acting skills and dramatic technique.

As parents, please check that your child knows his/her lines thoroughly and continues to regularly read them aloud to you, without the script, while you read the lines of the other characters.

Encourage your child to read the lines loudly, clearly, not too fast and with expression. Regular practice at home with a parent or sibling, will help all children feel confident about when to say their lines as well as well as what to say and ensure that they enjoy performing to an audience. It will also make a huge difference to these final rehearsals and ensure they enjoy the performances.

All children involved must also learn the lyrics to the songs, which will be posted in the next few days.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER – ALL CHILDREN                     MUST ATTEND!

 Saturday 26th May: Full Day Rehearsal 09:00 – 3:00pm

Tuesday 29th May: Extended Rehearsal 3:30 – 5:50pm

Thursday 31st May: Performance to students only 2:00pm – 3:30pm

Friday 1st June: Performance to Families 4:00 – 5:30pm

This production is a massive team effort, involving more than a hundred students. It makes it extremely difficult for the other children if any cast member is missing, especially in these final weeks.  It is essential to the success of the production that ALL children attend rehearsals every Tuesday and Thursday as well as the rehearsals and performances listed above.

We very much appreciate your support in helping us make this a memorable experience for both performers and audience.

If you have any questions please drop me a line: SNilsson@isb.bj.edu.cn

Warmest regards,

 Sue Nilsson

Using bodies and stage space

When we go on stage, we can show what kind of character we are by using our bodies. Without even saying anything, the audience is able to see clues about the character and their personality. Some of the things we need to think about is how we stand, what kind of facial expression we have and the ways in which we move.

We also need to use the space on stage wisely. Is the audience able to see everyone? Are we using all the parts of the stage, including the front, middle, back and sides? Here are some photos of the WoZ cast thinking about these things.

Wizard of Oz Rehearsal Schedule 06 – 15 March

WoZ Schedule 06 to 15 March BLOG

Please click on the above link to download a copy of the rehearsal schedule from 06 to 15 March.

We have organised rehearsals so that all children will be rehearsing singing, dancing or lines from a scene very time they come.  For this reason all children must attend every rehearsal.

Children should be checking the schedule so that they know which scenes they should be learning their lines for each week.  If your child has any questions about the schedule they can come see me in Room 2141.

Many thanks,

Sue Nilsson
