In the book Fahrenheit 451, the main character is a fireman named Guy Montag. The conflict in the story is Person v Society, in this dystopian place everything is opposite from our own. People fear firemen and curiosity, books and any type of literature is banned, and the meaning of social is to not speak or to think.
The firemen are the police in the book, where they catch the criminals and punish them for breaking the law. The firemen would start the fire and burn the literature and books as well as the house. But the house is fireproof so it would look like there is no damage done to the house from the outside. “So many people are. Afraid of firemen, I mean. But you’re just a man, after all. . .” (Pg. 11) Many people are afraid of the firemen because of the fires that they start or the stories and history that they burn. The firemen are different from the world that we know of and the one inside the book. “Is it true that long ago firemen put fires out instead of starting them?”
“No. Houses have always been fireproof, take my word for it.”
Strange. I heard once that a long time ago houses used to burn by accident and they needed firemen to stop the flames.” (Pg. 12) The fires are all started just to prevent the people from even thinking or considering breaking the law.
Established, 1790, to burn English-influenced books in the Colonies. First Fireman: Benjamin Franklin.
Rule 1. Answer the alarm swiftly
- Start the fire swiftly
- Burn everything
4. Report back to firehouse immediately
- Stand alert for other alarms
The rules or code of the firemen is to burn, they don’t stop and burning until all the books and the people that are rebelling are all gone or obeying the law. Reading these rules you can tell that there would be resistance since the last rule stand alert for other alarms shows that people are constantly going to rebel against the law and government, as they would think that the law isn’t fair or isn’t right to everyone.
From Montags point of view he sees all the burning and destruction as normal until he meets a 17-year-old girl named Clarrise. She changes his point of view about everything, as she is very curious about everything. She is an example in the book as the odd one out. She is very social, which in the book shows as antisocial.
“I’m antisocial, they say I don’t mix. It’s so strange. I’m very social indeed. It all depends on what you mean by social doesn’t it? Social to me means talking to you about things like this.” She rattled some chestnuts that had fallen off the tree in the front yard. “Or talking about how strange the world is. Being with people is nice. But I don’t think it’s a social to get a bunch of people together and not let them talk, do you? An hour of TV class, an hour of basketball or baseball or running, another hour of transcription history or painting pictures, and more sports, but do you know we never ask questions, or at least most don’t; they just run the answers at you, bing, bing, bing, and us sitting there for four more hours of film teacher. That’s not social to me at all. It’s a lot of funnels and a lot of water poured down the spout and out the bottom, and them telling us its wine when its not.” (Pg 33)
This quote from the book in page 33 is when Montag is talking to Clarrise. She describes a normal day at school inside that book, it shows that the school is trying to teach that you don’t need to talk as much to learn and grow. “Sometimes I sneak around a listen in subways. Or I listen at soda fountains, and do you know what?”
“People don’t talk about anything.” (pg. 34)
People grow up to be used to not talking or communicating as much so they become less social. Men and women walk around without talking or any type of communication. After talking to Clarrise and becoming more curious Montag feels different and has a feeling of realization about the place he lives and works in.
I can connect to Montag about his feeling, as people are less and less social everyday. Since technology is beginning to take over the world giving us the answers and goods to every problem we would every have. Can’t calculate or solve this? Use your phone and find the answer. But as technology is increasing our social time is also rising bit by bit. But slowly it is beginning to fall behind, as many people have other “things” to do now. As well as books are beginning to lessen, people buy and have literature in technology, downloaded or torrent. But printed books, and other types of literature is less used now, libraries are sometimes used. Our civilization is beginning to become similar to the book. But instead we don’t know who is rebelling or is wrong in our world.
In the book the Magician by Michael Scott. The moral or lesson of the story is that you should not feel unappreciated or left out as you are always going to be more important in the future.
“I can distinguish the different locations of the sirens.” “You can tell them apart??” he asked. He found himself wondering, yet again, at the full extent of his sister’s senses.” (Pg 16.) Josh is Sophie’s brother, as they are twins. Until a few hours ago Josh has never felt so apart from his sister, because his sister has “unlocked” new powers that makes her more different from Josh since he hasn’t gotten any. Joshes feelings for this are sad, useless and alone. As everyone with him had magical abilities, and are all risking their lives for the world, even his sister.
His feeling change his perspectives and also his attitudes to other people or things, like the alchemist Nicholas Flamel. He used to respect the alchemist as a smart kind and generous man. But after a few days that man he had respected had put his and his sisters lives in danger. With also the feeling of being alone and by yourself.
But among the other problems there is a man called Niccolo Machiavelli, the head of the French Secret Service. Niccolo is one of the servants of the Dark Elders. They will stop at nothing to achieve one thing, to kill Nicholas Flamel, and also to retrieve the final pages of the Codex book. Niccolo was called by John Dee (another servant of the elders) to help him track down and kill Nicholas Flamel. But after failing the first time in the church Niccolo is furious. Using every resource he can to get what he wants, or needs. “I am making this a DGSE matter,” Machiavelli interrupted softly. “My powers come directly from the president. I will shut down this entire city if necessary. I want these people found. Tonight, a catastrophe was averted.” (Pg. 48.)
Both these men have felt different emotions throughout this story, but the one thing that they don’t know is that they are going to be the most important in the later future. Even I have felt left out for sports, as people don’t pass to me or show me what we are supposed to do. But later after that saddening event has passed I carry on and show that I am and can be more important in the future. That way you can leave the sad and unhappy parts out of your life and move on feeling more appreciated and respected.
In the story The Alchemyst there are many myths and legends that all turn out to be true, all magical beings that are not entirely human, but they were born human. Some are immortal, others are gods. They all have powerful auras which enable them to perform astonishing feats. The main characters in the book are the twins Josh and Sophie. Three thesis statements that I found in the book are all about what the twins learn, or the feelings that they have towards other things.
There is always some truth in a legend or myth.
In every single place there are legends or myths, but in every myth or legend there is a grain of truth. Like for instance Nicholas Flamel is an legend, he was a famous alchemist. He could change stones into gems, etc. Scatty is a vampire, but she doesn’t suck blood, nor does she eat meat. She is also a warrior in many myths, and she would train great heroes. “Indeed they are,” Flamel said. “Wereboars.” (Pg. 107) The wereboars might sound like werewolves but they are not similar, although they are grouped in clans, and are very deadly. “The Goddess with Three Faces,” Scatty added bitterly. (Pg.110) The goddess with three faces is Hecate she is the god of magic, and age or time. She is a god from Greek mythology, which shows that there is always some truth in a myth or legend.
Don’t let jealousy or anger define who you are, let your own thoughts flow through you and be yourself.
Josh was jealous of Sophie’s new awakened powers, and was also angry at Nicholas since Nicholas knew that there was a risk of death, and still went on with the awakening. “What I can do is awaken your dormant powers, but the danger–the very danger–is that it will overload your senses.” (Pg. 228) Hekate has agreed to awaken the twins, but she has first warned them of the danger that it could possess. They agree at first, not knowing what could actually happen. “And Flamel knew this could happen?” Josh asked, feeling a great surge of anger in the pit of his stomach. (Pg. 238) The awakening was a very dangerous process, but the twins had agreed to it. But after Sophie had been awakened first she just lay there limp, she was in a coma. Flamel hadn’t told them everything, which lead to many other dangers that would come without them knowing. All he knew was that for the first time in their lives, they were different in ways he could not even begin to comprehend. (Pg. 239) After Sophie had been awakened Josh had felt alone, since he had not gotten to be awakened. For example later in the book, “You have to leave. What I teach is not for the ears of a humani.” Looking around the room, at Flamel and Scatty and finally at his twin sister, Josh had suddenly realized that he was the last pure human in the room. (Pg. 234) Josh was now alone, even his sister was not fully human anymore. He felt a surge of anger and left the room without even looking back. But over all he should push aside the negative thoughts and think posetively. Like how they had survived so far, or how cool it is to see magic in action. But if your jealous or angry at something, calm yourself down since, anger or jealousy doesn’t solve anything.
Last and finally my final thesis statement that I had used in the piktochart was that Family and friends would be the first people that would help you during a time of crisis.
For every single time a grenade is dropped on you, or you are the first one to cross the finish line. The people standing around you that are cheering for you are the people that care the most about you. “They’re going into the book shop,” she said into her earpiece. “Is Josh still working there?” Elle immediately asked. (Pg. 5) Sophie had been talking to her old friend every day. Still after a long time they communicate, but in this case Sophie has seen something very unusual and her friend was there to comfort her, and try to help her. “Josh,” Sophie called again, her voice high in desperation. “Josh. Where are you?” (Pg. 350) Josh’s twin sister Sophie had been in the shop with the Witch. Josh being a mortal without powers had to wait outside. Feeling depressed he left to the park. After Sophie gaining new powers, the whole group in the shop was attacked. She frantically ran out and called for her brother. Showing that family or your friends will be there when you need them, or when you need help.
The Alchemyst (Secrets Of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel) By: Michael Scott
The book The Alchemyst by Michael Scott, is a book that revolves around a legend, or a prophecy. Two twins would come together to fight, one with the power to save the world, another with the power to destroy. Josh and Sophie work across from each other, Josh worked in a bookstore, whilst Sophie worked in the café across the road from Josh. They had found out about legends and the reality that they actually lived in. How magic and legendary characters were actually real.
“I will not go down without a fight. For I am the immortal Nicholas Flamel.” Pg. 1
Nicholas Flamel is a legend that has lived until today; he cannot die, and was born on the year 1330. He had many jobs and has been many things in his lifetime. He has been a physician, cook, bookseller and a soldier, a teacher of languages and chemistry, and both an officer of the law and a thief. But before all of these jobs, he was alchemist, considered as the greatest alchemist of all. He has been summoned by many great people, kings, queens, and popes, he was able to make metal into gold. He could change many things into valuable things. He had also discovered the secret of eternal life hidden deep in a book of ancient magic. But the book has been taken from him, without it he and his wife would die. So he would fight until he has gotten the book back.
“They’re going into the book shop,” she said into her earpiece. “Is Josh still working there?” Elle immediately asked. Pg. 5
Sophie and Josh are twins. They have gotten a job right across from each other for a few months so far. Sophie has seen a couple of men walking out of a black car, heading towards the book shop where her brother works. But while she is watching she finds that those people are not actually human. They were Golems and John Dee. They were finding the Codex, a book that has kept the Flamels alive for this long. Sophie and Josh find out that the Flamels are actually really old and are legends running from John Dee.
“I’m sorry,” Flamel explained. “That’s an aftereffect or the . . . well, what you would call magic. My aura—the electrical field that surrounds my body—is still charged. Pg. 40
The aura is the magical force that surrounds your body; every single person has a different aura. With the aura there are a variety of different smells colors and powers included within your aura.
“I would like to introduce you to Scathach. She’ll probably not tell you much about herself, so I’ll tell you that she is of the Elder Race and has trained every warrior and hero of legend for the past two thousand years. In mythology she is known as the Warrior Maid, the Shadow, the Daemon Slayer, the King Maker, the—“” “Oh just call me Scatty,” the young women said, her cheeks turning the same color as her hair. Pg. 59
Scathach is also a legend, and has lived for a long time. She is older than Nicholas Flamel and is a next generation Elder. Nicholas has brought the twins to Scathach so that they could be trained to protect themselves. Scathach lives in a dojo, and wants to live a peaceful life without much war. She didn’t like having Nicholas bringing the twins and also trouble. There were birds and rats following them, they were being controlled by Dee, he could see through they’re eyes, what they hear, smell, and even taste.
Scatty waved the square of paper at the twins. “Every magical creature is kept animated by either in or on its body. All you have to do is remove it to break the spell. Remember that.” Pg. 72
Scatty has began to teach the twins, Flamel, and Scatty are being attacked by Dee and his creations. She begins with the most simplest of magic’s, when a creature is made you would have to take out the square piece of paper that is connect inside or outside of the creature to destroy it.
Hekate sighed. “It’s been a long time . . . a very long time since I took a student.” She turned to look at Scathach. “And that didn’t turn out too well.” “This is different. This time you would be working with raw talent, pure, untainted power. And we don’t have a lot of time.” Pg. 122
Flamel has brought Scatty and the twins to Hekate for protection and also for her to awaken there full potentials. The human’s senses have lowered over the years due to the fact that there was less danger every single day. She is an Elder and is able to do that kind of magic in order to make there senses stronger.
Scathach ignored it. “I want you to remember that everything you know—or think you know—about myth and legend is not necessarily false, nor is it entirely true. At the heart of every legend there is a grain of truth.” Pg. 134
In the book every single myth legend has a grain of truth in them, as they are true, the character, place, or even the events. As it is already proved, because of Nicholas and Scatty’s presence, Nicholas was a famous Alchemist, while Scatty was a legendary warrior.
Pernelle smiled. “Well, there is one thing . . . . Perhaps you could get a message to my husband.” Pg. 144
Perenelle was captured and taken by Dee, she was in a prison, but she didn’t know where she was. She then remembers things from her long life. She could see and talk to ghosts, but then put up a defensive wall. She made a defensive wall by changing her aura into purple, yellow, etc. But then she had lowered her defenses and spoke to a ghost, the guard that used to work at the prison. She agreed to free his connection from the prison if he carried a message to Nicholas.
He knew that there were houses like this scattered across the world, homes to those few Dark Elders who liked to walk in the world of men, usually creating mischief. Pg. 188
The Dark Elders are the same as the Elders, they are the ones that want to change the world into the past where they would be more powerful, and where people worshipped them. They were the oldest of all living organisms to walk the earth. Many of them fleed the world, or hid, but others liked to walk amongst the humans.
The more powerful the aura, the greater the magic. You two have extraordinary potential within you. The Alchemyst is correct: you could be the greatest magicians the world has ever known. Pg. 228
Hekate had talked to the Alchemyst, Scatty, The Witch, and many more. All talking about the power that the twins have and how pure their auras are and also how much power they would have if they knew how to use and master the different magics.
The Yggdrasill was dying. Huge slabs of bark sheared off, like icebergs breaking away from an ice camp, and crashed to the ground, littering the beautiful Shadowrealm landscape with shards of razor-sharp ice. Pg. 268
Yggdrasill was one of the two trees that had grown from the old days before the flood that had taken over destroyed the elders land. All the elders had gotten a seed from the tree, but only two of the elders, Hekate, and Odin, had been able to use magic and fully grow the tree. The tree was connected to Hekates power and life force, so after Dee had shoved Excalibur into the tree, it began to weaken, and as it weakened, Hekate weakened with it. The tree was connected to her life force and used her own as well as any other type energy, to sustain its own life. That is why it had drained the cars battery, and both the twins phone battery. But after the tree was dying it started to try to take some of Hekates energy to heal its self. Which explains why Hekate was draining energy, and also dying.
“This is a terrifying gift I have given you. Within you now is a lifetime—a very long lifetime—of experience. I hope some will be of use to you in the dire days ahead.” Pg. 330
The witch is Scatty’s grandmother, she is one of the wind elemental, but usually she would have more time to teach the skills to students. But in this case she just gave her memories and experience to Sophie so that she may use the powers for good. She would also have to learn how to control her powers, in order to keep everyone safe.
“It is ending, Immortal” the sphinx whispered. Perenelle’s smile was terrifying. “On the contrary,” she replied. “It is now only just beginning.” Pg. 369
The final sentences of the book are quoted above. Perenelle is being held hostage in Alcatraz, and a sphinx is guarding her. The sphinx drains all magical energy, so that Perenelle wouldn’t be able to escape, or do anything tricky. Perenelle is saying that the present is just the beginning, telling us that there is more to come. That way we would want to read on, and also those they will stop at nothing to succeed.
This book is a cliff-hanging book as it changes your mood throughout the book. Anger, Jealousy, and leaves you staring at the book not wanting to stop. The book would make you believe and want to emerge into the world of magic.
Being the youngest in the family is hard, since you are the one who has to try to draw your parent’s attention the most, because for your elders they can get your parents attention more easily. But since Waverly is the youngest she needed to be good at something or to prove herself to her family to get attention from her parents. Waverly needed to be creative and usually the younger siblings were more competitive. She had also learned a lot of things from her parents, just like holding her tongue back. ““Bite back your tongue,” scolded my mother when I cried loudly, yanking her hand toward the store that sold bags of salted plums.” (Pg. 1) After learning these things from her bigheaded mom, Waverly had learned the art of invisible strength to win arguments, earn other peoples respect, and also to win chess matches. I can connect to that because since I am an older sibling, life for me is hard, but then after reading online the things that the younger siblings have to deal with, I feel that I am living a better life than my little brother. But some of the things that come up are things that I don’t agree with. But that is not about my family or me, but about Waverly.
As the youngest in her family, Waverly has to be creative and find a way to prove her own self. By learning and playing the game of chess, and by learning the game of chess quickly, and also with perfection, but by doing that she had proven herself to be smart and talented in the game of chess. After winning against her brothers, she had played locally against some elderly people. She had learned new tricks to use during the game and by watching and observing. Another thing that she had done was weigh the different weights of each gift in Santa’s bag. She also had known from observing that not necessarily every big or small gift was good. “Having watched the older children opening their gifts, I already knew that the big gifts were not necessarily the nicest ones. One girl my age got a large coloring book of biblical characters, while a less greedy girl who selected a smaller box received a glass vial of lavender toilet water.” Pg. 3. Waverly had also won different chess tournaments throughout the country, and had made her mother and her family proud. Then at night she would look at her fake chessboard hanging on her wall and think of new tricks that she could use. With these points and examples it shows that Waverly is smart, and talented.
Waverly is also a curious, and obedient child. Since she had started to play chess, she quickly became addicted and wanted to learn more about how to defeat her opponents, she then had played against elderly people in the game of chess to learn new things and new moves. “I added new secrets. Lau Po gave me the names” Pg. 6. To show how she is obedient her mother had told her to bite back her tongue, so that she wouldn’t be disgraceful and disruptive. ““Bite back your tongue,” scolded my mother when I cried loudly, yanking her hand toward the store that sold bags of salted plums.” (Pg. 1) Another way of showing it is after playing a tournament her mother had told her not to lose as many pieces then last time. The next tournament she had lost less pieces then her previous times, 8 instead of 11. “Ma, it’s not how many pieces you lose,” I said. “Sometimes you need to lose pieces to get ahead.” Pg. 7. She had listened to her mother and had lost fewer pieces, which shows how obedient she is.
Overall I think that Waverly is a tough creative, smart, talented, obedient, and curious girl. Since she is the youngest in her family it is harder to get your parents attention, and you would need to be creative or different to get your parents attention. She is smart because she can come up with plays or tricks to use throughout the game, and also to learn the game of chess at a fast and astonishing rate. Waverly is talented, since she was addicted to it after playing it once, and she had also won many tournaments throughout the country. She is obedient because she will listen to her mother and obey her, but not only her but also her elders, and parents. Finally she is also a very curious girl, because she had wanted to learn more about the game, and like to observe and learn out of curiosity. I think that these points show that Waverly is a tough creative, talented, smart, obedient, and a very curious young girl with a lot of potential for chess.

HI!!!!!! So the first thing is that I’m not Calvin Harris. I do like music but I’m not a big fan of Calvin Harris. I like like to listen to the music that make me feel whole and good as a person, or just learn a something and play it on my guitar once in a while. I love to play Basketball, and I swim. I love to watch the NBA, and my most favorite team would probably be the LA CLIPPERS!!! My most favorite Basketball player in the NBA would be Chris Paul, because he is an excellent point guard and is not considered very tall in the NBA. I enjoy all kinds of sports, and live to play with teams and get better as an individual, and a team player. After all those sports I get really hungry tho! My most favorable food is a CHIPOTLE BURRITO, but in China (where I live) they don’t have it so… Im pretty much dead here anyways… BUT AT LEAST I HAVE BASKETBALL!! The only things that I hate in this world is being bored and homework.
Well Thats My Life!
In the future they will say we were all competitive
They will find us buried under trophies, next to ribbons, videos of us winning, our sports gear, and the world beneath our feet
The history books will say we were addicted to winning
They will say that we made fifty thousand Olympic games
in the future they will say we were all peaceful but fierce
