A day with needles and thread

During the One Day event on February 13th at ISB, I joined the gift making people and made a cube plush “cat” out of an old t-shirt. The instructions are very simple. However, the process was pretty long.

I began with cutting off a 6*12 rectangle, I decided to make 2 layers of the fabric since the t-shirt was very thin. So I folded the rectangle into a square shape and sewed the edges together to make a thick square piece of fabric. After a few more squares, I sewed all of them together and made a cube box shape. I sewed a long stripe of fabric to make the tail, stuffed it with cotton stuffing.

A Strand For You (Friendship Bracelets)

For my OneDay project, I worked on making friendship bracelets out of embroidery thread. Originally, my plan was to make DIY phone cases but some issues came up when I was ordering online, so the bracelets were a backup plan.

Original Plan: (Phone Cases)                                                                                                                                             Backup Plan: (Friendship Bracelets)                                                                           Personally, I wasn’t very happy with how my project turned

out since it doesn’t look the best, but I still had a lot of fun making these.

This was the first bracelet I made during OneDay. I actually didn’t know how to make bracelets before so I struggled for a bit before being able to finish it. The colors of the embroidery thread looked very good together though the bracelet turned out too big. I added the two clasps and some rings to hold it together at the end.

After the first bracelet, I sort of experimented with other colors, such as the one below. I used normal braiding to make this bracelet but instead of ending it with the clasps, I used a small ring to connect the two ends.

I was running out of thread that I like so I turned to making a necklace, like this:

It wasn’t really handmade because the chain was already made and I only had to add a few beads to it. However, this was probably my favorite one out of the others.

This was similar to the necklace but this was a bracelet and the beads were purple.

During the OneDay this year, I learned many things. First of all, I learned how to make these bracelets as I had no clue at first. In the process of making these bracelets, I had several struggles and problems but I learned to be patient and to not give up on things easily.

Caged Heart

Caged Heart

On One Day, I made a beautiful cage surrounding a girl and her fantasies. Everything I make comes from my heart. My artwork is a visual display of my emotions, and what I think the world has become.

“Caged Heart” represents how we are often deceived by our surroundings, all masked as the fantasies we desire. Our hearts are wrapped in an indestructible steel cage. But, that cage that limits us to do great things, to think with a kind heart, is disguised as something beautiful, something that will offer us money, offer us happiness.

The majority of us is bought into thinking that happiness is money, that happiness could be bought. Happiness is not the new Chanel bag you got or the new Mercedes-Benz your dad bought you…Happiness is something offered by life, something everybody deserves to have.

Happiness, or what seems like happiness is addictive. You want that feeling so much that once is not enough. Soon, you start demanding more. And when you don’t it, you start throwing a tantrum, because you long the feeling of joy, of that like feeling in your heart when you see what new things your parents have bought you.

The cage around the girl and her fantasies is laced with gold, with light, delicate butterflies perfectly positioned on the hideous metal is what hides the ugly truth.

The girl in the cage is peppered with expensive jewels, with designer tutus, with more and more dresses, jewels in her daydream…But she is not free, she is not truly, utterly, happy.

Her money get her tutors to make her smarter. Her money buys her dresses that make her for once, beautiful. Her makeup hides the repulsive mess her face is. At the end of the day, she has to take off her designer clothes, her expensive makeup, she has to make her head rest of the useless knowledge that will get her nothing but good grades than a good college, then a good, successful, happy, life; and face what she is–a worthless, spoiled, miserable child with nothing but a sad, caged heart.

People’s longing for happiness has made them greedy, has made them green with envy. But, once upon a time, everybody cared. Everybody had real emotions, everybody had experienced real, true happiness. True happiness is this raw feeling that you never know, never feel, until you experience it.

I hope “Caged Heart” changed the way people view things the way people see things. I hope “Caged Heart” will unlock the happiness that everybody has in their heart, and make them realize what they’ve been missing out on in the world.

Making Notebook & Letter Cutting

I made 2 notebooks and one letter cardboard. This was a gift for my friends and my cousins.

Wanna one is an k-pop idol that my friend really like so I decided to make one using the letter.

Wanna-One Letter

First I started to write letters on a cardboard. I wrote wanna one on the cardboard with a black marker and a ruler.

Second, I cut the letters out from the cardboard using an knife.

Third, I painted the cute out letters black with paint.

Fourth, I cut out the background card board and painted it white.

Then I used glue gun to paste the letters on the piece of cardboard.

Galaxy Note Book

First, I made hole on the folded paper and started to bind it together.

Second, I cut the piece of card board and painted it black using black paint.

Third, I used blue, sky blue, pink, dark blue and putted the paint on a sponge and started to dab paint on the cardboard.

Fourth, I put glue on the sponge and also dab glue on the cardboard.

Fifth, I sprinkled glitter on the card board and pasted the cardboard using glue.

Star Notebook

First, I made hole on the folded paper and started to bind it together.

Second, I cut the piece of cardboard and painted it light purple.  Then I soon figured  that the notebook didn’t look really well so I painted it sky-blue on the top.

Third, I mixed star glitter with glue and putted it on top of the cardboard.

For the back, I did the same thing but instead of star glitter, I used blue glitter.

Final Look

The challenge that I faced was when I couldn’t close the notebook because of the glues with the star notebook. So, I took off the back cover and pasted a new back cover.

I learned that when you make an book cover you have to measure a little longer that the book cover. Next time, I should have made more accurate measurement and made more detailed measurement.

Hype Shoe Turned Personalized Shoe

For One Day I really wanted to customize a shoe. I wanted to make it look “hype.” I tried to get a lot of the brand names in. Most of these brands like SUPREME or Offwhite simply put a zip tie or even their name on the shoe. The price of the shoe can go up to $3,000. Originally, I really wanted to use Vans. But Tony told me it would be harder to paint on the Vans. Also, the Vans cost more 500 yuan, so I chose a pair of 300 kuai Nike Air Force Ones. Originally, my idea to customize it was like this:

On One Day, everything was set and I planned out everything perfectly. One thing hindering me was the fact of the format of the shoe. The format of the shoe allowed for less surface area for the Louis Vuitton stencil. I also wanted to cut off the strap on the shoe, but the strap appeared to be sewn on to the actual shoe. Upon trying to cut out the stencil, I realized it would be physically impossible for me and that I should’ve bought a proper one. There were too many nooks and crannies that the Exacto knife couldn’t reach without tearing the paper. I ended tracing and drawing the design. I decided to make the shoe more personalized rather than hyped. Even with the easier route to complete the shoe I still feel like I made tons of sloppy mistakes.  I feel like if I had another time,  better materials, and a better focus, I  definitely could’ve made my original idea come to life.
