Title: Making Cool Things out of Plastic Trash

(please don’t call your blog post OneDay 2018)

For OneDay, I chose to work in the Precious Plastic group.  I feel really strongly about sustainability and the overuse of plastic and I am excited we have plastic recycling machines at ISB now.

Here is my sketch from one of our OneDay pre-planning sessions.

First, I collected bottles from my house (Polypropylene- PP)

Second, I got help with shredding the plastic.

I measured 380g of the PP and got help with the oven to heat it to 160 degrees C for 30 minutes

I then clamped down the bowl and let it cool outside.

I learned a lot during OneDay.  I learned about the different types of plastics and the process that needs to take place to go from plastic trash to a new/beautiful product.  I also learned that any black in the plastic chips will overpower most other colors, so next time, I would use less.  This process also takes a lot longer than I thought it would, but with more practice, I think I can make things more efficiently.  Also, as you can see in this picture, my bowl is cracked.  I think I can fix it by reheating it, but I’ll have to do it some other time, since I ran out of time during OneDay.
