This is a handmade polar bear bookmark that I gave to people who came by my campaign. The back has my logo on it and promotes my app launch event!

For my design piece, I planned an app launch event.  I also created a draft of the game that I will be launching.  The user interface and code for my game is shown below:

To attract my target audience, younger (elementary) students, I gave lollipops to students who listened to my presentation and answered questions regarding climate change.


1. Now that it’s over, what are my first thoughts about this overall project? Are they mostly positive or negative? Be specific

I really enjoyed this overall project!  I liked how we were given a lot of freedom to choose our specific topics and were given time to do our own research.  Almost all of my thoughts regarding this project are positive.  It was different from other projects that I have done, where students are given strict guidelines and turn in the final product into teachers.  Moreover, I had a lot of fun presenting my campaign to a variety of audiences, ranging from elementary school students to high school teachers!


2. What were some of the most interesting discoveries I made while working on this project? About the problem? About myself?

While working on this project, I learned a lot about how climate change impacts our earth systems, specifically the cryosphere and biosphere.  In addition, after researching how we can reduce the impacts of climate change, I discovered that I do things that contribute to climate change.  In the future, I will aim to live a more sustainable lifestyle!


3. What were some of my most challenging moments and what made them so?

Some of my most challenging moments were associated with working on my website.  I was not very familiar with Wix, the platform I used to create one of my media pieces.   It was frustrating formatting certain pages because I did not know how to use some of the features.


4. What were some of my most powerful learning moments and what made them so?

My most powerful learning moment was when I was presenting to people who came to listen to my campaign.  I found that I had to tailor my presentation style according to my audience.  For example, when speaking to elementary students, I used simpler terms and frequently asked them questions to keep them engaged.  On the other hand, when presenting to teachers, I was able to get into the details of my project with them understanding and asking me additional questions!


5. What is the most important thing I learned personally?

The most important thing that I learned was to not procrastinate.  Because this was a large project with many pieces involved, I found that it was smart to finish or almost finish a media or design during each class.  If I had waited until the last minute to do the two media and design pieces all at the same time, I would have been very stressed and would not have produced quality work.


6. What most got in the way of my progress, if anything?

Something that got in the way of my progress was not having an Android device with VPN to run my app.  After developing my app, I was not able to run my game because I found that China blocks that software that I needed to use for running my app.  However, I overcame this obstacle by printing out the user interface and code of my game and presenting it instead of having a running game at my campaign.


7. If in a team, how well did I and my team communicate overall?

I was not in a team.


8. What did I learn were my greatest strengths? My biggest areas for improvement?

I learned that a strength that I have is presenting.  I feel that I was able to effectively communicate the key aspects of my project to different audiences.  On the other hand, something that I could improve on is time management.  Although I got everything done on time, I found that I had to spend a lot of time outside of class.  If I had focused more during class time, I probably would have needed to spend less time outside of class.


9. What would I do differently if I were to approach the same problem again?

If I were to approach the same problem, I would ask a teacher or a peer for advice.


10. What moments was I most proud of my efforts?

I was most proud of completing my website!  It was challenging to create different pages and get the interface to look like what I wanted it to.  Finishing my website was very satisfying and I have learned a lot about creating websites!  Next time I use Wix, I will be more experienced and it will hopefully be easier to work with.

Literary Element – Theme of The Crucible

Concern for reputation is a central idea of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.  In Salem, where private and public moralities are intertwined, reputation is very important.  The actions of the characters are dictated by underlying worries of how a tainted reputation will adversely affect their lives.  As a result, various characters’ actions are propped up by the desire to protect their reputation.  This desire is immediately evident in Act 1.  Even with his daughter in a coma, Reverend Parris’ main fear is that his reputation will be threatened if witchcraft is found under his roof.  Similarly, another character who displays concern for reputation is Danforth, who had already convicted numerous townspeople and refuses to accept Mary’s testimony, as it would destroy his credibility.  The dominant demonstrator of the theme of reputation is the protagonist of the play, John Proctor.  His concern for reputation is strong throughout the play, and his actions are underscored by his fears of being labeled a sinner in the public eye.  Proctor already feels guilty for having an affair, and the idea of revealing this sin and publicly tarnishing his good name torments him.  In the final events of Act III, John Proctor experiences a dilemma of losing his name or losing his life.  He finally decides that the price he has to pay in reputation in order to live is too high and he chooses to die instead of sullying his good name.  As he says, “How many I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Arthur 143), he highlights the theme of concern for reputation once again.  Throughout the play, Miller effectively establishes the message that because a bad reputation can severely and irreparably damage one’s status in society, people will go to extreme lengths to protect their good name.
