Salva Dut is a young man who looks for any piece of hope to grasp upon. Sometimes, he expresses himself through his emotions in various scenes. He also owns a beautiful heart and desires for education.

Their walk seemed endless on the desert. There was a time when he and the group saw another group where five men have collapsed of thirst, hunger, or exhaustion. Salva himself felt the same but was about to use his water to maybe try and save them. Another time was while everyone was settling down at night to rest, a lion crept by and has killed one of the boy. After hearing the news, Salva felt so wretched. When he was at the age of a young man, he joined a refugee camp. He always hoped that he might be allowed to do some work and make some money. And after making some money he wants to leave the camp to get some education.

Salva grasps on to any hope and I can tell. Firstly, he traveled miles with some other orphan boys to a second refugee camp just hoping to receive more food than the first one. It was no better, but he didn’t get frustrated or anything. Second, when he reached there, there was a chance of traveling to the US. Names will be put on boards that tells who are going. He finds that his name wasn’t there, so he keeps of wishing till that day. Lastly, He met a person called Michael in the second refugee camp. He found out that Salva really like to study English, so he chose to teach him. Each day Salva will murmurs “ABC” to himself.

In the book, Salva was always described as the lucky one. This is based ona true story, so he is very lucky. His behaviors probably helped him to survive and it did help him learn many things throughout his life.
