When I was five, a psychiatrist diagnosed me with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). My parents were told that I needed to take medication, but my parents had a traditional mindset and didn’t believe in western medication.
In school, I was extremely alert and overactive and coped well whilst exhibiting the typical behaviors of a child with ADHD. My results were consistent with my peers, though I thought in different ways often creating an alternate route to get to the same answer. I am a firm believer that teachers need to champion all students with varying abilities. That is why I have always wanted to explore the question, “How can teachers better support students with ADHD and other learning differences?”
I want to be part of a community that strives to make differences for the betterment of others and especially in the field of education. I am curious to explore methods that will support students with learning difficulties in finding their talent. From my own experience and readings, children that fall out of the ‘average band’ often put forth ideas, alternative solutions and are very focused on solving problems. However, stories prevail from many creative, brilliant people who have been deeply affected by the discrimination brought by society, deeming them to have learning difficulties or mental disabilities. This discourages people, limiting their potential, their talents and creativity.
In Barnard, I believe my thirst for learning and question would be fulfilled in the field of neuroscience. As I would be able to observe children’s behavior via the toddler center. I would want to employ an education minor in order to learn about pedagogical approaches that will help me to learn how educators can support children and advocate for them in every way in order for students to succeed in the mainstream.
If I could use one word to symbolize the previous semester I would say “Roller-coaster”. Why a roller- coaster you may ask, well, coming back to school after a whole semester of online learning was quite hard. I felt like it was definitely a roller-coaster of emotions, nervous, relaxing, confusing and so on.. Coming back to having class in person I felt like I was reconnecting with the world. After more than half a year of virtual school, and rarely talking to people in English, I started to stammer, unable to say full sentence without stopping. To say the truth, at that time I was quite nervous for my English IO practices and class discussions in general. However, my speaking skills improved much faster than I thought, and I was back to I was before, everything finally calmed down. But then right when this ended all the tests came piling on. I felt bombarded with questions of how to take the tests, how to review and all things I knew before. I was really quite a hectic time for me. This roller coaster of emotions lasted until mocks. And just when I thought everything was over, virtual learning returns…..
Through this month of practicing different pieces of music and practice music to improve the speed of my fingers. I felt like I can feel a huge improvement not only on the song that I am being assessed on but also my typing speed as well. I practiced every day and out of the 20 mins of my normal practice I took out 10 mins to practice to various pieces of music each day. I started from mainly scales and the practice book music7, and as time passed I was able to do the simple scales very well, I added more of the AMIS practice music. I also added in the music piece to get the fingering down before speeding up. I practiced each scale increased the speed by placing a metronome next to me when practicing. I would play at a slow speed, and when I am able to play at that speed without playing anything wrong 5 times in a row I would change the speed and play it faster. Slowly I was able to play the song faster and faster.

During the past seven month I have faced many uncertainties and challenges. However, the hardest situation I have faced would probably be coming back into China. Although in the past seven month I acquired many new skills and traveled around China, I would still say the biggest successes I had during this pandemic was spending quality time with my family. Academically wise in the past seven month I became more assertive/proactive. I set up zoom meetings and sent emails to teachers for clarity when needed. This would definitely be something I want to keep with me moving forward. I felt like during the coronavirus I improved a lot on my practice IO’s. I believe it was because I was being proactive, sending teachers my IO outline and asking for feedback. Last year was a very special year, there was a lot of hardships and success. However, thinking back to all the literal and non-literal text we covered, I still enjoyed learning our first unit the best. In the first unit we learned about China’s culture revolution. In it we got to analyze old propaganda posters, read the little seamstress and watch “To Live”. I think I enjoyed that unit the best because we were able to have many conversations and discussion about the texts as a class. My SMART goal for this year is too improve my writing skills. I will do this by reading more variety of literal text to improve my vocabulary and learn more ways to organize my commentaries.
In the past month, I have read countless poems written by Carol Ann Duffy. Carol Ann Duffy’s poems are always full of emotions, ranging from pure mischief and evil to cozy and heartwarming. From reading Carol Ann Duffy’s works, I have learned to appreciate poems, as they are almost like a puzzle. As we analyze each poem, we discover the figurative meaning behind it, and when we piece the meanings together, we discover a new hidden story. Carol Ann Duffy also frequently uses colloquial diction, which I enjoy reading, as it gives the overall poem a flow. It also allows me as a reader to better understand and connect with the emotions expressed throughout the poem. All in all, the experience of learning Carol Ann Duffy was quite enjoyable as just through one poet, I was able to have a completely new concept and understanding in the text type, poem.
Due to the coronaviruses ISB has resorted to online learning. In my opinion there are pros and cons in this situation. I have always heard online schooling and have been quite curious in what it’s like for quite some time. Hence, when I heard of what we were doing I was quite excited. However, I didn’t have the best luck, my computer broke during my flight back, so I had to redo many of my assignments.
As for the new online learning experience, what I enjoy the best is being able to adjust to our own time. Being able to complete assignments at our own pace has helped increase my efficiency in completing tasks. With the freedom in time, I have also picked up many new skills, such as doing housework, cooking and chess. Nevertheless, without interaction with students and teachers understanding new concepts and topics have been quite difficult.
In conclusion this new online learning system is an interesting experience.
