Story Told Through Cheques

Lawrence Exeter Jr. is at the peak of his life, almost none in London can afford even his boot. Like his father, Lawrence carelessly spent his time and money on women after women. He found it entertaining to wander aimlessly through life and solving his problems with bundles of cash. Lawrence did not care about much other than his women and Tony Spagoni.

Lawrence’s first encounter with Tony is one of his proudest moments. When he was getting his shiny red cardiac repaired, 2 men walked past him towards mechanic, Tony Spagoni. Startled, Tony started running, but the 2 men held him down. Like lions chasing down its prey. It is at this moment Lawrence decided to stick his nose into other people’s business. He walked towards the men slowly with his head high, a confident smile curling around his lips.

“Gentlemen, if money is what you’re looking for, here it is.”

The 2 men stare at him, stunned.

“Got a name.”

After a short pause, one of the men replies, “Walker, both of us.”

Lawrence hands them a cheque; he smirks as he watched their eyes grow wider. The men whisper apologies as they ran with the cheque. Tony soon became close friends with Lawrence after this incident, they shared common topics as they both grew up in Mississippi. Tony approved Lawrence’s careless way of life, Lawrence felt like the first time he had a true friend.

Lawrence finally ran in trouble when he flirted with a powerful lady, he was accused of harassment with major evidence against his case. Suggested by Tony, he schedules a private with Wall and Smith. In a small room, 4 chairs and a small table were set up. The moment he walked into the room, the dark metal door slammed shut behind him, an eerie silence filled the room. Lawrence was confused but was not frightened by any of the strangeness. He noticed an open laptop on the towards the center of the room. To closely examine the laptop, Lawrence plopped down in the armchair in front of the table. Snap! Thick metal clamps closed around his limbs, pressing his overweight body into the small armchair. Tony Spagoni’s face appeared on the black, blurry screen. Lawrence gasped with disbelief, he couldn’t breathe when he understood that the only legitimate social acquaintance he has maintained in the entirety of his life has been fabricated.

Tony spoke with a calm, collected voice, “Lawrence Exeter Jr., you are requested to send a blank cheque to Tony Spagoni using the check directly in front of the laptop. If this task is not completed, consecutive electric shocks would be delivered to ensure you have completed the cheque.”

Lawrence was quiet, he wasn’t agitated, or sad. Instead, he looked back at his life, silently thinking back at the lack of accomplishments in his life. A deep loneliness and emptiness filled inside him. Lawrence filled out the cheque without dispute.

Lawrence Exeter Jr. was found dead at an abandoned office the next morning, even though he held great power, no one mourned for his loss or felt grief when Lawrence passed on.
