Final Learning Portfolio Entry: Two Years of IB English

As the year is coming to a close, I would like to present some of the highlights and lows of my year in this class!

What have I learned…

One of the most important skills that I have acquired from my overal time in English HL A, Language and Literature is analyzing content that we are more familiar with. I think this skill has given me a wider understanding to how we can view our world, whereas previously I would not have been able to see certain aspects of a text and the overall issues that we are facing in a society today.

What will I miss…

One of the biggest things that I will miss is probably interacting and having discussion with friends in this sort of classroom environment. Once I am attending university, I may not have many opportunities as there are likely to be large lecture halls filled with hundreds of students listening to one teacher who isn’t loud enough to fill the entire room.

What will I always remember…

As previously mentioned, I will miss and remember greatly the interactions that I have had with my friends. If it weren’t for this class, I would not be able to better grow as a person and that I would have had less opportunities of interaction with the people that I go to class with.

What text, literary or non-literary collection of works, stood out the most, and why…

Two texts stood out to me: American Born Chinese (Gene Luen Yang)  as well the Odyssey (Homer). Both texts presented a wild story that combined deep themes, fantasy and realism into their text. I could relate as I am ethically Asian and that English is my first language. Additionally, I had moved to Beijing from Hong Kong at the age of seven, and was placed into a environment that was distinctly familiar and at the same time, not familiar. It was common ground that I could find with the Odyssey that made me thoroughly enjoy this reading experience.
