As a visual arts student, I really enjoy coming up with new ideas and am eager to express my inspirations into physical products. I have the experience of utilizing different materials/mediums to achieve different effects in my artworks (e.g., pencil sketch, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, gouache paint, wood/acrylic laser-cut, digital art, sewing, knitting, ceramics, printmaking). I believe my artistic skills will be able to help me design a product that is complete, meaningful, purposeful, and aesthetically pleasing to a general audience.

Overall, I am pleased with how my illustration turned out in the end! I was quite nervous about using adobe illustrator at the beginning since I do not have a lot of experience creating artworks with digital media. But after this first project, I feel much more confident about using the pen tool and adjusting subjects on different layers in illustrator. Not only was I able to successfully trace the image of my face with the pen tool in curved lines, but I also made sure that the colors in my face complement each other to create a subtle and realistic image to the audience. Although my attempt at color adjustments was not terrible in this project, I did find this process to be the most challenging step. While the eyedropper tool can easily collect any shade/color on the reference image, the uneven surface of the face(as a result of being made out of color blocks) can often end up looking unnatural and abrupt. One evidence of this can be observed from the character’s hairline. The chocolate brown color gradually blends into the rest of the forehead. However, the warmth from the color has quite a sharp contrast with the character’s hair color, which has a cold tint to it.

As a teenage girl, I choose a soft pastel colored pallet with floral patterns in the background to celebrate my hopeful attitude toward the class, as well as the fresh beginning into a new year and new semester. The quote “be a better version of yourself” is my goal for the new year, which can also be taken as a goal for this class, such as developing more skills, building my creative thinking and challenging myself into achieving better grades than last semester.
