This was the final product:

This is how it works: The player has to let all the balls roll out in the box by lifting the stopper and then putting it back into place so that everyone only has 5 tries. The game starts by placing the ball on the cap and rotating the orange button to the position you want to shoot it at. Then you press down on the popsicle stick as there is tension between the position stick and the rubber band. The player has to put in the right amount of the force so that the ball flies in on of the basket. The top basket gets 3 points while the lower 2 both get 2 points and the bottom basket only has 1 point. After the ball goes through the basket it will roll down and will be stopped by the stopper and after all the balls are gone then the game starts over again.

This is how my project works with a video:

The conversion of energy is shown by the tiny catapult to launch the ball. The different types of energy included in a catapult are potential, kinetic energy, and gravitational potential energy. There is also elastic energy as there is a rubber band holding the popsicle stick. When the catapult is released, it transforms from potential energy to kinetic energy. The kinetic energy then transforms into gravitational potential energy since the ball flies into the air.

I was successful in making the catapult rotate and able to work and release the ball. I also was able to make a kind of tunnel for the balls to roll through and be stopped by the stopper. I was also successful in making changes and improving things when things didn’t go well. I think the things I need to improve on is to make it more aesthetically pleasing. I think there was a lot of places where I rushed it because of the amount of time I got. For example, the baskets didn’t all look the same as one of them was partially cut while the others were just marked with a sharpie.

This product is mainly for kids or adults that are bored or want to have some fun. It can also be for people that like to play arcade games or love to play basketball as this whole product is also based on the basketball arcade games. This is a safe product as there is nothing part of it that can harm other people. The product is also environmental free because all the cardboard I used were recycled.

Create and Improve

This is the catapult that I made:

I had some problems making the catapult because there were some materials that I couldn’t find so I had to improvise and find new materials that would work the same way. For example, I couldn’t find the button to move the direction of the catapult and I also couldn’t find a pencil end to secure the catapult and to allow the catapult to rotate. So, I searched through the jewelry/decoration box to find the alphabet H and the green plastic tube. I received some feedback from a friend as the catapult kept on falling off since the plastic tube was really short. My friend suggested to cut out a small cardboard piece and make it into a cylinder and is able to fit the hole but not go through the hole. He also suggested putting a small circle on time so that the cylinder won’t come out and make the catapult come loose.

I also was able to make the backboard and the basket. There wasn’t enough time to cut out the tiny details of the net of the basket so I decided to outline the lines with a sharpie. There was also a problem because the basket was facing downwards and it wasn’t a straight basket so I decided to put a piece of cardboard behind the basket

I made a very big mistake when I was gluing the cardboard sides on. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take a picture of it but I accidentally glued the cardboard sides the wrong way so the ball was rolling the wrong way. I fixed it by cutting off the dried glue and cutting out two new cardboard sides.

I

I went through many problems and one them was that the box for the ball to roll out was too small as afterward the stopper would allow the balls to go through it would get stuck, as the bottom of the hole was blocking it. So I got some feedback from my friend and his idea was to sandpaper the bottom of the hole to flatten it down and make it the same height as the inside of the cardboard. The idea worked but there was also a bit of a flaw about the stopper since the stopper would sometimes be lost as it was a different piece and can be taken off. So I decided to glue a small circle at the bottom of the stopper so that it won’t fall out and it would stay in place. This is what it looked like after the changes:

Define and Inquire

What are you thinking about doing?

I was thinking about making a vending machine but it doesn’t really convert energy so i decided to switch my idea.

My next idea was an electric eraser:

But this has some problems because it’s too big to carry around and also hard to use.

My next idea was a drink dispenser machine. I stuck with this idea for a long time but we do not have air pump motors which allow the drink to flow. So I decided to look for other drink dispenser machines that don’t use motors. I found a few that don’t need motos, but they don’t show energy being converted.

My final idea was to make an NBA basketball board game from cardboard. I think this would be a great idea since it shows the energy transfer by the rubber band. This idea is safe for kids to play with it and it also wouldn’t be very heavy since it is made of cardboard. I have all the materials as they are all cardboard, paper cups, ping pong balls, wooden sticks, and some more. I think some problems that I will go through would be the measurements of the cardboard and where to hot glue them.
