A Complete Guide to Alchemy

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho tells the story of a young shepherd named Santiago who is able to find a treasure beyond his wildest dreams. Along the way, he learns to listen to his heart and, more importantly, realizes that his dreams, or his Personal Legend, are not just his but part of the Soul of the Universe. The book incorporates multiple key elements of modern storytelling such as characterization and theme, and my multimedia aims to further explain the intricacies of this modern classic.
For my multimedia, I chose to create a guidebook on alchemy, a key concept in The Alchemist. Each section of the paper represents a certain element of the book, and provides meaning and understanding to newer readers.

The Key Vocabulary section simply explains important terms used frequently in the story. These words are essential to the plot and development of Santiago as a person, and the book’s almost theological stance on life builds interesting connections between The Alchemist and religion. In all, the section allows the reader to better understand the information that follows, and highlights the book’s spiritual elements.

The Core Principals of Alchemy section is a summation of a few themes present in The Alchemist, followed with supporting quotes. The themes are ranked in order of importance (1 being most present, 4 being least present), and are a collection of thematic statements present throughout the story. This section simply aims to better explain the book to it’s readers.

Finally, The Qualities of an Alchemist section represents the multiple character traits of key figures in the book. This section projects the ideal traits of an alchemist, all of which are either personality traits of Santiago or of the alchemist himself. They compare and contrast both respective personalities, which allows to better understand how Santiago can develop as a person.

In short, The Alchemist is a book of much value. The plot pushes readers to reflect on their own lives, and the storyline never fails to excite. Paulo Coelho utilizes multiple writing techniques to beautifully intertwine the concepts of characterization and theme to better emphasize the message that all individuals should live in the singular pursuit of their respective dreams to provide this complete and inspirational book.
