English 9 Final Reflection Blog Post

In this unit, I learned about several ways humor is created within the language. In the One-act play “Drinking companion” that I read through, I realized that the writer uses irony and pun to make humorous effects. For example, irony happens when Harry, a character in the play, states he is not a drinker while drinks all lunchtime and nighttime: “I’m not hooked on it. I can go for weeks without a drink, you know, if I have to.” (10). A pun is at the use of “scent sprays” (8), which has the meaning of both make someone attractive and letting someone defend against the predator. During the process of analyzing the poem, “Perfect for Any Occasion”, I found out that the author, Alberto Rios, uses personification of pies as humans throughout the whole text to generate humor in which they “talk” (36), “wear makeup” (12), etc. Rios reveals his idea of how to face changes in society by using examples from food. All of these techniques create humor, which breaks boredom and makes readers relax mentally. In this unit, I focused mainly on analyzing texts, so I still would like to learn more about how visual plays create humor, for instance, how does the way performers act make the audience laugh.

 

I met my SMART goal for this unit, which is getting better on organizing different points in a CER to create a logical mind flow for readers. This can be reflected through the feedback I get from people on my poem analysis CER, as they can clearly see the relationship between each point and can logically flow with the argument. The most challenging part for me in this unit is to paraphrase every line in a poem to a simple form, which means I must capture their intended meaning and know what literal techniques are being used with what effects on readers. This is a process for me to be better at analyzing poems as I carefully annotated every line and thought deeply on them.

 

For SAL standards, I think I am MEE/MAS for the Responsibility section. I actively ask and act upon feedbacks both from teachers and students and work independently with appropriate resources. I only pass the deadline with teacher’s permission. The way to improve on it is to turn works in before the due date. For the Attitude section, I rate myself MAS because I take the initiative to work with ambitious but achievable goals. I never try to avoid challenges but face them with my best effort every time. I will maintain my passion for responsibility and attitude.

 

This year, I got more experienced in writing. I learned a lot on how to write a persuasive text throughout English 9, from “An Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian” to the “Sun Yang Event”, and to the poetry CER. These have all been my true experience and I will remember them forever. I also got to know and used many literal techniques, for example, rhetorical question, repetition, logo, patho, and etho. Next year, I will assign myself more books to read to improve myself as a better English speaker and a better writer, especially in writing persuasive tasks since I use it a lot in daily life.

English formative and summative assessment reflection

There is a lot that I learned from these two assessments. At the start of this unit, when I watched people’s presentation, I was astonished and can’t believe that they could analyze so many details, any small object on the cartoon could just be interpreted as a big event. In the formative assessment, I realized that I also own this analytical ability. If I spend enough time looking at every detail and researching on the contexts of the cartoon, it would just be really easy to know what each element represents. I could even analyze the small dragon symbol on the mask in the medicine poster that I looked at, and this gives me hope that I can do well on it. In the summative assessment, it is another step for me to get better, I was looking at a political cartoon that has that is describing the relationship between the U.S. president, D. Trump, and the coronavirus. At first, I didn’t notice that Trump is drawn in this cartoon. But after browsing through many of his caricature pictures, I realized his main features, for instance, hair and face color, and lips. So, when I looked back at that cartoon, I distinguished D.Trump in it immediately. On the other aspect, I improved my public speaking skills. I don’t feel too strained anymore when speaking, and could build up a mind of slowing down and make interval pauses. Therefore, the experience of the English formative and summative assessment on cartoon analyzing could be the commencement of my public speaking and interpreting skills. It makes me realized that I can do it and gives me confidence.

reflection on socratic seminar

The things I did well in today’s socratic seminar are:

  1. I made proper eye contacts. Even though I used computer to keep track with my notes, I still look at the speakers to show my respect.
  2. I asked deep understanding questions, I asked some questions that are not only limited to what really happened, but to the symbolism. For instance, I asked what does the second basketball game, which is the one that Reardon beat Wellpinit, mean in a deeper understanding of the book.
  3. I built on others’ points and answered others’ questions.
  4. I analyzed cartoons in the book the pointed out important evidence inside. For example, I pointed out that most of the pictures on “Why I did actually miss a lot of school” are related to poverty and death, and this shows people in reservation are irrational.

The things I did not do well are:

  1. My language was not formal and precise, and I used words as “like” and “um” when speaking. I think this is because I was so afraid of speaking, and will improve later when I speak more.
  2. My sitting position is not really good, I did not sit upstraight.

Socratic Seminar Practice

The things I did well in today’s class are that I encouraged others to express their opinions and responded to the questions in a deeper way to show my understanding. For instance, I claimed that the win in the second basketball match between Reardon and reservation not only marks as a sport winning, but also the failure in reservation’s life. Then I asked my group mates to add something on my claim.

I still have parts that need to improve on for the next socratic seminar. My logic is moving too fast, which then made my sentences to be confusing. I need to slow down the pace and fix my logic before speaking. Sometimes I could not even follow myself.
