1)How to make non-newtonian fluid:

  1. Add 100 ml of water.
  2. Add 200 g of cornstarch.
  3. While adding the cornstarch, mix it slowly.

2) Claim: The non-newtonian fluid is the most successful prototype.


  1. bullet-proof.
  2. very soft (just like a liquid) when poking slowly.
  3. Very very hard when poking really fast.


Because our aim is to make a computer protector, so a very hard surface can really work in that case, and our polymer is even bullet-proof! Our polymer is also soft when touching slowly, which could attract more customers to buy it since it’s very weird.

The prototypes are glue and non-newton fluid, they are both white and liquid. We tested them respectively, and the result is that glue doesn’t have a good protection skill, but non-newton fluid has, so we chose non-newton fluid. The next step is to determine how much water and how much corn starch should we use. We found out that the greater percent of corn starch in the non-newton fluid, the stronger and stiffer this polymer is, but we still need to put some water with corn starch because we need it to form non-newton fluid, and also make it be flexible and reversible, which could go back to its original shape once been punched. Later we found out that if corn starch is 80%, and water is 20%. the polymer we made will be the closest as what we expected. And from the observation, the color of the polymer is white, and it’s half liquid and half solid, and now we are testing whether it would dry out or not.Image result for glue

The physical properties I want my polymer to have are:

1. Be hard so it could protect the computer.

2. The shape and appearance of the polymer could return back once been hit.

Plan to develop different prototypes:

I need to mix solid and liquid into a whole body so that it’s hard and reversible. And because of that, I found cornstarch and water. They are actually perfect for mixing them together. They can form as a whole, and also it’s both solid (cornstarch) and liquid(water). Basically it’s the mixture of water molecule and cornstarch molecule, and when you put you finger slowly into it, it’s a liquid because there’re water molecules, but when you just punch it, it became a solid because the force makes water molecules to go down to the bottom, so the surface are all made by cornstarch molecules, which is a hard solid.

Method to test the prototypes for my desire properties:

I will make some procedures first, then try it out,  then I’m looking for two features of my product to determine whether that the one I expect to get or not: 1. is it hard enough. 2. Can the shape go back once been hit? If the product has all of the two features, then this product is the one I expect to get.

The goal of my project is to make a protection to computers. My target audience is the person who’s computer has usually been crashed on the ground. The polymer that I’m creating is the polymer when something hits on it really hard, it’s really stiff, but when something just goes into it very slow, it’s very soft, and somehow become a liquid. Even bullets shot from a gun can not go through it (Science Alert, Liquid Armour Is Now A Thing, And It Stops Bullets Better Than Kevlar). So when the computer falls on the ground, this polymer will perfectly protect the computer since it’s very stiff. The specific characteristic of this polymer that is best for my design problem is stiff when fast hit. And in order to attract customers to buy my product, I have made my product different from other products. First of all, the unique characteristic soft when poking slowly and stiff when hitting fastly could draw a lot of customers’ interest since it’s unique, you know as the salary for people in China increased, more and more people are buying things that are looks good, so this products could really attract this kind of people. Secondly, it is much stiffer than other protectors, since even bullets could not go through it, so it could provide a better protection.


For example, one of my clients is my mom, she usually crashed her computer to the ground, which created a lot of pits at the edge of the computer, and that even happened when she got some protections. So, I will put the product I that created by me into use on my mom’s computer, and because of that, the pits on the side of the computer would never exist.

Polymers are the most common thing that human cannot get rid of. Almost everything in our life is polymer, including backpacks, water bottles, and even devices. Polymers are the thing which made up by long, repeated molecule chains.

There are two types of polymers: natural and synthetic.


Natural polymers are the polymers that didn’t been processed by humans, and usually, they are easy to find in daily lives. For instance, woods from trees and rubbers are both natural polymers.


Synthetic polymers are the polymers that had been processed by humans in order to make them be better. For example, rayon is a synthetic polymer, which is made from wood pulp or cotton. It has several really good characteristics: low cost, diversity, and comfort. People use rayon to make clothing, belows are the procedures:

  1. extract and purify the cellulose from rayon.
  2. generate cellulose into cellulose filaments.
  3. spun cellulose into yarns.
  4. use yarns to make cloths.

Another example is polyester, the ingredient of it is ethylene. Polyester has several uses, for example, it could either be filament or in staple form. For the filament one, each individual strand of polyester fiber is continuous in length, producing smooth-surfaced fabrics.

Actually, another interesting example of synthetic polymer is when people blend PVA glue and borax together, a new solid substance would be formed.

The planet which NASA should focus on

Claim: NASA should focus on the cold moon of Saturn (Titan) because it has the condition for lives, and we have already made a plan for it.


“The first proposal, called Dragonfly, would be unlike any project before: it would send a flying robot to an alien moon. The spacecraft would have a quadcopter – that is, four spinning helicopters – to help it move and fly around.

The robot would be equipped with instruments that could help it identify certain chemicals. These could give us clues to any living things on Titan.

In addition, the robot will be able to fly hundreds of miles to study the environment on Titan. This large, cold moon of Saturn has thick air. It also has lakes and rivers of a chemical called liquid methane. Scientists believe that a watery ocean may sit beneath the frozen outer layer of Titan.

It’s ‘an environment that we know has the ingredients for life,’ said Elizabeth Turtle. She’s a researcher at Johns Hopkins University. With Dragonfly, scientists can learn much about how chemistry has changed before life emerged, Turtle said.”


According to the evidence, there’s a plan for this project, so far, all the problems have been solved by the project designer. Elizabeth Turtle said the environment on Titan has the ingredients for life, that means maybe there are some alien creatures on that planet, so it’s very important for us to discover that planets. The next step we should do is to make the quadcopter which is available to do that mission. Then we should do some experiments. And after that, I think we can send the quadcopter to Titan.
