Polymer Journal #4

When we started making our prototypes we were left on a blank page, our first prototype was similar to normal slime. It didn’t seem to have any help with reducing impact. Soon we realized that nothing really worked. While I was strolling around the materials a special looking solid caught my eye. “Guar gum”. After I figured out that it had rubber-like properties, we changed all of our recipes. Now they’re all relied on guar. The strength of the prototypes with guar is that it seems to reduce impact better than our other prototypes. With strengths come limitations, our original idea was to make it so that we could mould it, we put the porotype into a glass beaker and indented another beaker into it. We were hoping that it would dry and hold the shape. As of now (5 days) it still not dry, and moldable. The outside is starting to crust, however, the inside is still soft. The class before the dream on team comes, our team decides to change our polymer. As of now we don’t have any prototypes. But we have an image of gelatin/jelly like substance. Holds its own shape like a flower pot.

Polymer Journal #3

In class, we tested at least five prototypes. In the end, we’ve decided on the slime that has a rubbery texture for the outside mold and the super slime transparent slime for the inside “jelly”. After testing out different properties I’ve noticed that PVA glue, corn starch liquid and guar gum gives me the textures we are looking for. We don’t have an exact idea, however, I know we will base it on the amount of guar gum. The rubbery texture we are looking for is a mystery, we hope that after the tests we will get the exact amount of guar gum. For the “Jelly” slime on the inside, we will be following the recipe for ‘Super Slime’. Once all the polymers are made we will go through tests for drop resistance, shape holding and not mixing with the ‘jelly’ slime. For drop resistance, the team will bring something that can be tested with and wrap it in each polymer and use the machine to test the amount of force. Which has the least amount of force exerted will be one of the best options.

Polymer Project #2

Our idea for the polymer project is very simple; create a holder for small items (accessories). It’s mainly built for audiences who own accessories that never have places to put them. Our polymer is somewhat close to a carrier for items. The outside shape delivered is a bowl shape. Inside we fill it with “Super slime” a polymer that has the properties to be transparent. The jelly serves multiple services; protection and decoration. We aim mostly towards jewellery items. Rings and necklaces can be kept in the transparent slime can be protected when dropped. The outside mould serves as a case to put the transparent slime in. As the properties of the transparent smile can’t hold its own shape. Decoration wise we offer different colour variations, any of your choice. If you heat up the polymer you can mould the shape with your creativity. Our aim for the outside shell is to be hard, the filling on the inside to be transparent and protect the jewellery.



Polymer journal #1

From my research online, I have gathered together the most simple way to describe polymer. Little stuff connect together to make long stuff, the longer the heavier it gets. Essentially it’s the same, but with vocabulary. When monomers connect together they create polymers. Artificial polymers have identical monomers. Natural polymers have different monomers. Longer polymers have a higher melting and boiling temperature. With the addition of higher viscosity (how “thick a liquid is”).

PVA glue is also a polymer. A long chain of carbon atoms. Once PVA is mixed with borax the chains of atoms become connected, after the reaction the substance becomes more solid like. It is not completely solid, just something that can hold its own shape together.

Synthetic fibres, rubber and even plastics are a form of the polymer. All synthetic fibres are made up of petroleum oil. Then goes through a chemical reaction. Rayon (the type of silk) and (Clothing, rope, mechanical parts, etc).

DNA and RNA are natural polymers, with different neighbouring monomers. Forming a special DNA strand that belongs to you. Artificial polymers like plastic are made
