For this project, I worked alongside Haojia and David.
It has been a while since Batista was re-elected. Life for the poor wasn’t the best, while the rich were content. This creates a massive economic divide leading many people to rebel. For this assessment, we are getting graded on collaboration, Speaking, and communicating historical ideas.

the historical context of the novel.
This girl has always stood in the middle of 2 places, as “Mami” is from Cuba and dad Is from America. Her grandparents on her father’s side live in Los Angeles, they don’t really know any Spanish, just English, Russian, and Yiddish. because they were born in Ukraine, somewhere they escaped from because of violence. Overall, the girl has an extremely diverse background making it hard for her to decide where exactly she belongs.
Kids who are multi-cultured often find themselves in a battle to figure out who they truly are within. This girl loves Cuba so dearly, but on the other hand, loves America as well. Although we, later on, read that she has a stronger liking towards Cuba, we still see that she struggles within about where she belongs. For example, when she says “one of my two selves is left behind”(p.25) We can tell that when returning to her “normal” life in California she emphasizes that part of her is still in Cuba. “Sometimes, I feel like a rolling wave of the sea, a wave that can only belong in between”(P.34) This was really powerful because not only does it show that the girl feels like she’s being torn into 2. A lot of us can relate to it. A lot of us can also relate to being born in one place, and growing up there, but having parents from somewhere else.
On Saturday, December 8th, there were protests that happened in France. “We are fed up of hearing promises from politicians. The French don’t believe in them anymore.”-(Anonymous). The French President Emmanuel Macron and the Government had made many promises to the people, but the cost of living kept increasing, including taxes and much more. Many French citizens filled the streets resulting in 136,000 yellow vests (Protesters) in total. Many of the protesters were middle-class French citizens that struggled to pay rent or live lavish, like the other higher class French, resulting in great fury.
“Last week in Paris, the protests reached a level of violence unseen since the student uprisings of 1968, with participants destroying shop windows across the capital and vandalizing national monuments, notably the Arc de Triomphe, an enduring symbol of the French Republic” Was it too much violence? Or were the French protesters justified in their actions? Not only were many injured but numerous people were getting detained. According to the Washington Post “In total, more than 1,380 people were arrested across France.” Did they deserve getting arrested? Or Did the yellow vest protesters do what they could to speak up?
This is my interactive map of the different legations, Many might ask, Do the Boxers deserve a bad rap? Well, there could be different approaches to this question. After all the bloodshed and determination lasted a long period of time. (55 days) But the Boxers did what they could to preserve their country. They did what they could to keep their fellow citizens from turning against them. As the Christian missionaries were coming in, China was changing rapidly. People were becoming religious, and the Boxers were trying to stop it.

As u can see, on the sides of the poster, it’s written “good girl” “bad girl” that is supposed to give the viewer some insight on the characters or more specific character (Samantha) who is also the protagonist. This shows the change that she makes throughout the story. She goes from a cruel mean girl to a girl who has a heart and kindness towards everyone. U could also see that all this “collage” was put on a dark blue sheet of paper. I chose this intentionally because the story Before I fall it’s not one of those stories with unicorns and ponies, it’s one of those stories where girls are so cruel making the lives of others miserable. Following up to the characters. As u can see there are 4 names written. Samantha Ally Lindsay and Elody. But if u look closer u will notice that Lindsay’s name is written especially larger compared to the other names, and this is because I wanted to show that Lindsay is like the leader of the squad. Or the larger figure. The rest is mainly symbols. Such as the Starbucks. For example, the Starbucks represents Samantha’s least favorite drink or brand. On Samantha’s last day she asks to get a latte from Starbucks because she didn’t want to miss the opportunity.
For my MSND magazine, there were some parts that I chose deliberately so that it would look more appealing to the viewers. starting from the fonts. I chose to use different fonts so that it is easier to easily differentiate the two different paragraphs or heading. I also chose to add a bigger image of Hermia because she is the main focus for my magazine, and my goal is to help the readers/viewers to remember that they are reading about Hermia.
Before I fall by Lauren Oliver
Actually Sam for short. A soul filled with greed, and hatred. A mind that kicks others down when they rise up. And a life controlled by her 3 friends. 17-year-old Samantha was found dead today. Her body was found in a car at the bottom of a small cliff along with 3 of her friends. Many suspects think that the girl that was driving (Lindsay) Had lost her mind from the party others think that she simply didn’t look where she was going. Numerous people knew that life was not going to be the same without the 4 girls. Many could describe Samantha as cruel, respected, and a dreaded person.
Throughout Sam’s life she has shown many incidents of her cruelty, For example, the day of the party. Juliet has been a victim of the girls bullying for many years now, However, on the day of the party, she decides to stand up for herself. It wasn’t too long before she was getting pushed around and getting food thrown at her. Yet it seems like Samantha only contributed to a fragment of this bullying, But she actually played a bigger role than many can see. Sam explains that she was so infuriated and embarrassed when Juliet confronted her, But the only thing she could think of when she sees Juliet is: I never knew you were so pretty. Why would she do that to a girl she thought differently about? Would her friends be disappointed in her? “Lindsay’s gorgeous, but the rest of us aren’t that much prettier than anybody else.”(Page17) Lindsay was the ‘leader’ of the friend group. Samantha emphasizes this by explaining how looks matter, and because Lindsay is the prettiest she is highly prestigious not only in the friend group but also in school.
Samantha is a highly respected student of the school. She once said, “It’s a good feeling knowing you can basically do whatever you want and there won’t be any consequences”(Page 18) So is Samantha respected for the right or wrong reason? All students respect her, Surprisingly teachers as well! The life of Sam is a really complex one, Possibly complex enough everybody wanted to live like her. Once during a test, Samantha cheated off this girl, But at the end, the girl was the only who got told off. But that couldn’t be fair at all to the girl. However, at the end of the day, Even the teachers show a little bit of fear towards Samantha. Not only that, Samantha has a way to get teachers to prioritize her. Like cheating isn’t enough, Samantha usually ditches class to meet up her friends in the bathroom.
Lastly, Samantha showed how dreadful she could be in many ways, The reason people fear her is because of her power. Although, She has a charisma that no one likes or appreciates (Other than her own friends) No one has the nerves to get up and confront her. This is mainly because of their fear towards her. Teachers don’t expect much of her, And she gets away with everything. Like EVERYTHING.
Furthermore, Being cruel, respected, and dreaded, does not make Samantha any less of a person. Her dynamic way of looking at the world really interests a lot of people. Or maybe it’s that she still hasn’t found her true self yet.
Connect with the conflict. Write a text-to-self response in which you connect with the protagonist’s struggle to overcome one of the conflicts listed in the definitions above. Who or what is the main character struggling against? Ask yourself if you’ve also struggled in the same way. Your first paragraph must explore one type of conflict in your independent novel and provide MLA formatted quotes to show your understanding of the type of conflict. Your second paragraph should be a much longer paragraph, in which you describe your own struggle to overcome the same type of conflict that the protagonist struggles to overcome. Include specific examples from your own life.
I’m doing an analysis on the book “ILLUMINAE” Written by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. In my analysis, I am focusing on the element of fiction, Conflict. In the book “ILLUMINAE” There were various conflicts that took place. After reading the first couple of pages it had become evident that this book is based more on a man to Society plot. After reading a couple of pages it has also come to my attention that this “World” that they are(The characters) living in is dangerous. Because in our real-life world it would be highly unlikely to one day go to school, then get attacked by flying spaceships. Moreover, I believe that Kady (One of the main characters) Is a generous girl. Because even though she broke up with her boyfriend that same morning, She still decides to help him out and escape with him. We can see that there are many conflicts in just the exposition. But what we could also see is the character traits, and how they change based on the situation or conflict that is going on.
A couple of conflicts that Kady and or Ezra have to overcome is the adjustment to a different society. Everyone has gone through this one point or another. For Kady and Ezra, it’s joining different ships and getting separated. I remember when I was young I had to go through this a lot. When I was younger a lot of my friends would leave each year, and It was sometimes hard for me to cope. Although I could send mail to them like Kady and Ezra, It still wasn’t the same. Another change for me was moving to ISB, this was definitely a different move, And although at first I completely disagreed with this idea, It turned out that a lot of opportunities opened up to me. I’ve noticed that “After rain always comes a rainbow”, Meaning for anything negative that is happening there is a positive reason and it could somewhat beneficial at the end. Another Conflict that Kady and Ezra have been going through is friendship issues. This is a very common conflict that everyone has probably gone through. In the book “ILLUMINAE” The main friendship conflict was lack of communication. On pg. 2, you could see that Kady explains her struggles with Ezra in the form of an interview. I deeply connected with this part because friendship issues has happened a lot of times in my life. Such as when some people misunderstand and assume things about me that aren’t true. A quote that interested me was when Ezra said “But there was another guy that looked like me, and he was laughing” Ezra said this when he was retelling his dream to the interviewer. He had dreams and thoughts that spoke vividly by themselves. We could also infer about the doubt that Ezra has about His and Kady’s future friendship.
