Define & Inquire: Blog Reflection

Your chosen design brief (design problem, user, constraints, etc) and a short description about why you selected this project to work on

For this project, I chose to address a problem relating to dental clinics. Most children hate going to dental clinics when they are young.  It is because they are often scared of it. The scratching sound of drill spinning, the toxic smell of medicines, and the unfamiliarity of the place are the main reasons why children have scary images of dental clinics. As a result, children cry whenever they go to the dentist and parents have a hard time trying to appease them.  After all, going to the dentist became a burden for children, parents, and even dentists. It is highly troublesome in that it evokes family conflicts and makes doctors tired. Therefore, an effective solution is needed for this problem. To solve this problem, I decided to make a mascot character for a dental clinic targeting the children. By making a cute mascot character for children, I can give them a good image of dental clinics, helping them not to be scared of dentists.

I chose this project based on analyzing strengths and weakness . The strength of this project is that the idea is fresh and interesting while also dealing with a social problem. When doing a project like this, it is easy to work on a subject that is cliche and obvious. Environmental issues are one of those examples. I personally think that working on those obvious subjects are not really interesting. So I tried to come up with an idea that is special while also successfully addressing the social problem. I thought dealing with the problem that children are scared of the dentist is interesting and appealing.  It also benefits parents, children, and dentists, which makes my project beneficial for the whole society.  Moreover, there is no specific solution to solve this problem, which makes my project fresh and effective. Adding on, my project is quite viable. Making a mascot character is a simple design project, so it won’t be hard for me to make one. On contrary, there was no weaknesses or threat that is big enough to affect my project. If I must choose one, the weakness is that my project cannot completely erase children’s fear of dentistry. But my project can at least improve it. Since this problem does not have an effective solution although it is quite severe, it is enough meaningful to at least improve it. Therefore, this weakness is not severe enough to affect my decision. Concludingly, I chose this project because it is fresh, interesting, effective, and viable.

Your audience profile – a mood board or visual display of the different characteristics of your user/audience

This is my audience profile. For my audience, I targetted children aging from 3 to 10 because they are the ones who are often scared of dental clinics. Obviously, my audiences are the children scared of dental clinics because the goal of my product is to make children less scared of dentists. Gender does not matter about whether children are scared of dentists or not, so both genders are my target. Since my mascot is going to be cute in order to relieve the fear, the audience must be the ones who are attracted by cute things.

Evidence that you have created and shared some kind of survey to gather primary research on your user/audience

For this project, I created a survey so that I can gather some ideas about my subject. The target audienceㄴ of my subject was aging from 3 to 10, so it was impossible to directly interview my targets. Therefore, I interviewed adults who are raising children. Doing so was quite hard, so I could only get 6 responses, but it was quite enough.

The following are the questions that I asked, and summarized answers:

Have your children ever been scared of going to the dental clinic?
Yes
If so, how old were your children when they were scared of going to the dental clinic?
3~8
Why do you think that children are scared of the dental clinic?
They are unfamiliar to it. the sound is scary, the surgery hurts
What are some ways we can make children less scared of the dental clinic?
“Make a better image of dental clinic for children.”
Do you think that making a cute mascot for the dental clinic can make children less scared of the dental clinic?
Yes

An embedded Padlet that shows a wide range of divergent inspiration, and evidence of information gathering (tools, materials, techniques that you think might help you solve the design problem)

The following is the examples of the mascot that I searched. These samples were found in google, Pinterest, Instagram and so on. The similarity between these designs is that the mascots are all cute. It also shows that the color of these designs are usually soft. Affected by this overall trends of the mascot, I decided to make my design cute with soft color that so that it attracts children without scaring them. Then I moved on the mascot of dentists. They generally utilized a figure of tooth, and some used tooth pastes and tooth brush to symbolize brushing teeth. Therefore, I also decided to use those features for my design to really show that my mascot represents dentists.

A paragraph that describes your goals and next steps

The overall goal of my project is to make a mascot character for a dental clinic to give children a good image of dental clinics, helping them not to be scared of dentists. For the next steps, I must work on coming up with a design draft. When doing so, I am going to look at the design examples on my padlet. I think they are really good ones, so I will refer to them really often. Just like I did for other projects, I am going to brainstorm the designs that I have on my mind. Then, I am going to a best one, and try to developed that design.

Unit 3: ITZME

During this unit, we made a logo that represents the topic that we chose.  I chose ITZME, a DJ who specializes in electronic dance and trance music. From his career as a DJ dealing with electronic dance music, I decided to express a concept of music, dynamic, enthusiasm, and energetic. If I am able to express these concepts on my logo, then my product will be successful. I started this project by brainstorming 40 design ideas for the logo ITZME.

These are the 40 design prompts that I came up with, but many of these designs were of low quality as they were brainstormed. Therefore, I chose 4 designs that had the best visuals amongst these prompts.

These are the four designs that I chose from the design prompts. I chose a final design to focus on among these prompts, so I crossed out three designs that had some problems.

The problem with the second design was that it was too complicated. I personally think that this design’s visual is the best among my prompts, but its complicity makes it more of a sticker than a logo. The problem with the third and fourth designs is that they do not represent the target concept: music, passion, energy, and lighting. Therefore, they do not really show the identity of ITZME, which does not fit my logo. As a result, I decided to develop the first design for my logo. I thought its visual is not bad, and that it has a great potential to express a concept of music, enthusiasm, dynamic, and energetic.

To develop my final design I searched for some designs that I really liked on Google, and I was quite inspired by the graffiti-like designs.

These two are the designs that I was inspired by. They consist of the font that is based on the graffiti-like design.  I really liked how dynamic these letters are, and I thought these thick styles of letters will be able to express the concept of energetic for my logo. The visual of this style was really cool too. However, the problem with graffiti-style is that it may lack clarity. For instance, the pink letter for the first logo is meant to represent the number 2012, but it is not clear. Therefore, I must make sure that my design is clear enough to effectively make this style of design.

Inspired by these examples, I came up with the sketch of my final design

I used the graffiti-like font for my design so that it makes my logo look dynamic. I also made letter Z resemble the figure music note and lighting bolt, which represents the concept of music and energetic. I made its size big enough to highlight those concepts. I drew lightning bolt on the back to make it visually look better and to make my logo look energetic.

Using vector lines, I drew this converted on my adobe illustrator. When doing so, I found out that the music note figure in the middle resembles s rather than z, so I flipped it over to really show the letter z.

I was quite satisfied with this work, so I moved on to the next step to color these letters.

I colored the figure in reddish colors because the color red represents enthusiasm. The color becomes lighter as it moves to the left, making my logo look visually better.

Then I got great feedbacks during the class relating to the imbalance of my logo. It turned out that the size of letters I and T is slightly bigger than M and E, which makes my design unbalanced. Therefore, I made a final adjustment of decreasing the size of the letter I and T.

The following is my final product:

I also tried to utilize my logo with the sample product of CD, which looks quite cool.

Logo ITZME

How my clients will interpret my logo:

The specialty of this logo is that it uses a graffiti-like font. The letter itself is quite thick, sharp, and unbalanced, and this style of the font makes my logo look dynamic and energetic.  Although it uses the graffiti-like font, it does not have a problem relating to clarity and it clearly shows the letter ITZME. As it shows, the letter Z resembles the figure of a music note and lighting bolt, which represents the concept of music and energetic. The letter Z is the biggest letter among my design, which highlights those concepts of music and energetic. There is a yellow lightning bolt that penetrates the letters, which adds to the image of dynamic and energetic. Lastly, I colored the letter with reddish colors. I did so because it really fits with the yellow lightning bolt, and mainly because the color red symbolizes enthusiasm. The color shifts from dark red to orange as it goes from left to right, and this makes my design visually appealing. I think my logo was successful because it not only looks good but also represents the concept of music, dynamic, enthusiasm, and energetic. Through these concepts, my logo successfully informs the viewers of ITZME and his career as a DJ dealing with electronic dance music.

Refleciton

Overall, I think my logo was really successful. The graffiti-like font of my design was visually attractive, and its colors were really diverse. All the letters clearly show the word “ITZME”, which strengthens the clarity of my logo. The whole logo is quite balanced, which is also a strength of my design. The logo is not too complicated nor too simple, and it has adequate complicity to be a logo. As I mentioned before, I think my logo was successful because it not only looks good but also clearly represents ITZME. My logo clearly reminds of a DJ dealing with electronic dance music, representing ITZME.

However, the problem with my design is that it may not fit with the product which is in a color that does not look good with red. This problem happens because my design consists of reddish colors. For instance, the product in brown or purple may not fit with my design because those colors don’t look good when it is with reddish colors. That is why I spent a hard time choosing the color that looks good with my design when making the CD cover. Next time, I must make more design prompts with different colors so that I can carry the colors when utilizing it for my product.

Graphic Design – Bookmark

  • What is this design task all about?

During this project, we created a bookmark using the design elements and principles. Mr. Griffin assigned us a principle to necessarily utilize, and using the design element was totally up to us. The following are the elements and principles of graphic design.

  • What is the role of elements & principles in graphic design?

Elements of design:

Point: Basically a dot. It is the most fundamental element of design.

Line: Connection between two points. This is also one of the most fundamental elements of design.

Shape: An arrangement that is formed by multiple lines. This is also one of the most fundamental elements of design.

Form:  Representing 3 dimensions in the design. This can help the design look visually attractive.

Tone: applying light and dark on the figure to present 3 dimensions.

Texture: Illustrating a tactile feature on the figure to make the design look alive.

Colour: the perception of the figure described by its hue.

Type: The lettering or text that takes part in the design.

Principles of design:

Emphasis/Hierarchy: To draw an audience’s attention to a certain part of the design through emphasizing.

Balance/Alignment: Arrangement of each figure to make the design visually attractive and clear.

Contrast: Applicating a difference between the figures to make the design visually attractive.

Pattern/Repetition: Using the repetition of figures to make the design visually attractive and clear.

Scale/Promotion: Utilizing the size of a certain figure to emphasize something in design.

Movement/Direction: utilizing dynamism to make the design look active and energetic.

Negative Space: Leaving out empty space on the design to emphasize some parts of the design.

Cropping: Removing parts of the image or type to make the design visually attractive and clear.

Using these elements and principles of design, the designers can effectively express their thoughts or visually attract the audience. All the elements and principles have different usage and affect, so using them helps the designer make their own unique product.

I was assigned to alignment for this Bookmark Assessment.

Social/Political Posters - GraphisThe Art of Alignment In Graphic Design | DesignMantic: The Design Shop

These are good examples of alignment. They both have red rectangles standing at constant intervals, which is the main feature of alignment designs.  The constant intervals make these design simple, and also visually attractive. Just like these example, I will stack up the figure on my bookmark to express alignment.

  • Why did you make your bookmark to look this way?

For this assessment, I was assigned to “alignment”. I thought of some ways to utilize alignment on my project, and I decided to use colors and shapes from design elements on my work. I did so because it will be visually attractive and also neat to align quadrangle on my bookmark. I thought it will be too simple and boring if all the quadrangles are in the same size, so I differentiated the length and width of the quadrangles. Moreover, using the same color for all the shapes also makes my design boring, so I needed to vary the colors. The work of Piet Mondrian is one of my favorites, so I was inspired by the colors his work uses. Concludingly, I colored by quadrangles with red, yellow, black, light blue, and dark blue. I also made sure that I am aligning the quadrangles at a similar distance, around 0.5cm, to make my bookmark visually attractive and neat.  My design effectively communicates alignment, because it focuses on aligning shape at a certain distance.  As a result, my design looks neat and visually attractive.

Persona Poster – Dahun

This is the first digital portrait that I really appreciated. The biggest feature of this portrait is that it used polygons to illustrate a woman.  Her whole figure was presented only through polygons so it easily attracts people’s attraction. The use of polygons also helps this portrait look neat and clean.  All the polygons have different colors, which explicitly presents the shade on her face. The color of this portrait also makes this it successful. Her hair is in red and the background is in turquoise.  Those two colors are in complementary contrast relations, so the colors stand out.  It seems like the author first sketched an approximate figure, filled it in with the polygons, and colored it.

This is the second digital portrait that I really appreciated. The biggest feature of this portrait is that it uses various colors in a man’s skin. He first used orange to set the overall tone of his face. Then, he added colors such as red, purple, green, and blue, making his face look colorful. What is really interesting is various colors are not arranged in a messy way, but are distributed according to light and shade, giving a three-dimensional effect.  It seems like the author first sketched an approximate figure, filled it in with the polygons, and colored it.

This is the third digital portrait that I really appreciated. The biggest feature of this portrait is that it is in a form of illustration drawn with paint. Therefore, the portrait has a texture of the paintbrush. As it is in the form of illustration, the portrait is drawn with great detail, especially her eyes. In addition, this portrait is in the structure of light coming from the right, so it shows sharp contrast between light and dark. Lastly, this portrait also has a feature relating to colors. All the colors used in this portrait is brown, yellowish-brown, and apricot.  The colors are similar to each other, so the poster has a strong cohesion of colors. It seems like the author first sketched an approximate figure, organized light and dark, then colored it. ㅣ

This is the fourth digital portrait the I really appreciated. The biggest feature of this portrait is simplicity. The portrait only used the least elements needed to illustrate a person. Therefore, her face is not drawn, and it only shows a figure of a woman. However, even though it was painted with minimal use, it feels neater than lacking.  The detail is concentrated in clothings more than the face, so it helps the helps audiences to concentrate on clothings.  It seems like the author first sketched an approximate figure, added details on the clothing, and then colored it.

This is the fifth digital portrait the I really appreciated. The biggest feature of this portrait is its color. The portrait consists of white and black, which presents a dark atmosphere of the portrait. Moreover, the use of white and black explicitly presents light and dark contrast. The portrait also has a rough texture of paintbrush, which adds on to the dark atmosphere of the portrait. It seems like the author first sketched an approximate figure, organized light and dark, then colored it. Lastly, it colored the background with a paintbrush.

A plan for my persona poster

For my persona poster, I will mainly use adobe illustrator. It is the most basic graphic design tool, and Mr. Griffin also spent a few lessons about how to use it.  Therefore, it was appropriate for my beginning graphic design skills. I am planning to choose my passport photo to be the base of my self-portrait. The reason why I chose a passport photo is because it is in the front view,  being easy for me to show light and dark.  Based on the photo, I am going to use vectors to sketch the line of the photo. The tool “Anchor” and “intersect” will help me trace the lines effectively. While doing so, I should use the “layer” system to draw separate parts of the portrait and put it all together in the end. Then, I will color the sketch based on the original photo.   Lastly, I will identify where the light is coming from, and illustrate the detail of light and dark.

Process of my self-portrait

Firstly, I traced the overall face line of from the passport photo using the vector system of adobe illustrator. Then I set my base skin and hair color.  This base skin color became the standard color when showing light and dark detail.

In this stage, I added eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, and ears on my face line. Still, all the elements of face lack in detail. However, this stage was crucial in that it set the basic structure of my portrait.

In this stage, I added some details on my face. The light and dark contrast was added on my nose, ears, and face to provide a three-dimensional effect. Moreover, I drew eyelashes and the reflection of light on the eyes to make it look real. The illustration of my face was done on this stage.

In this stage, I sketched a line of neck and body based on the photo through the vector system. Then I roughly colored them in. Still, the detail of my neck and body lacks in this stage.

Lastly, I polished my neck and body. I drew the shades on my neck to give a three-dimensional effect. To make the intersection of my neck and body smooth, I drew dark shade between it. Finally, my self-portrait is done!

Final Product & Reflection

The following is my final product.

I started the whole project with my self-portrait. Firstly, I traced the overall face line of from the passport photo using the vector system of adobe illustrator. Then I set my base skin and hair. This base skin color became the standard color when showing light and dark detail In the next stage, I added eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, and ears on my face line. Still, all the elements of the face lacked in detail. However, this stage was crucial in that it set the basic structure of my portrait. In the third stage, I added some details on my face. The light and dark contrast was added on my nose, ears, and face to provide a three-dimensional effect. Moreover, I drew eyelashes and the reflection of light on the eyes to make it look real. The illustration of my face was done on this stage. In the fourth stage, I sketched a line of neck and body based on the photo through the vector system. Then I roughly colored them in. The detail of my neck and body lacked in this stage. Lastly, I polished my neck and body. I drew the shades on my neck to give a three-dimensional effect. To make the intersection of my neck and body smooth, I drew dark shade between it. Finally, my self-portrait was done!

Then, I used the self-portrait to make the persona poster.  I used Canva to make the poster, as I was familiar with using it. I wanted to make my poster simple enough so that it can convey the idea efficiently. However, I did not want them to seem empty,  so I embedded my portrait at the bottom left, and wrote information on the remaining space. I wanted to make a strong cohesion between the self-portrait and the background of my poster, so I chose an apricot background that resembles my skin color. As the background was apricot, I used dark green and white color for the writings so that it stands out.

I think my work is good in terms of poster design. I paid a lot of attention in the resemblance of portrait and background, and the visibility of the font. Moreover, I designed the poster so that it does not seem empty nor complicated. As a result, my poster effectively conveys the idea about myself. I think the self-portrait was also good in terms of light and dark comparison. It was explicitly used on my nose, ears, face, and my neck, so that it gives a three-dimensional effect. The gray shade between my neck and body makes my portrait look smooth.

However, I should improve on my lips. Compared to the other elements of my portrait, lips are the part that had the weakest detail. I was new to adobe illustrator, so I could not illustrate the wrinkle and the complex reflection of light on the lips. Next time, I should practice adobe illustrator enough so that I can add some complex details.

English Final Reflection – Dahun

Through this humor unit, I learned how writers are using language to create a humorous effect while conveying the theme or message. At the starting of the unit, I was quite ignorant of literary devices, but I acquired new literary devices such as anaphora and alliterations through both Confusions and the poetry anthology, which generated a humorous theme. However, I still need to dig deeper into the content. For the “Drinking Companion” dialectical journal, I did not make a significant observation on how the language is influencing the audience, and for the “Sick” CER analysis, I analyzed too many literary devices, so my product became extremely narrow. Therefore, I should try to add more detail to the audience’s response to literary devices for further assessment.

My SMART goal for this unit was to understand how to use language devices to create a humorous atmosphere and to understand the influence on the audience. In general, I successfully achieved my SMART goal for this unit. I discovered an anaphora of I and my on every line except line 2,28,30,31 and 32, and found various alliterations including “My mouth”, “Hip hurts”, “Belly buttons” and “Pendix pain” on line 5, 15, 16 and 18 which were new devices for me. I also analyzed that these devices are letting the audience easily immerse themselves into a humorous theme. I could do so because the feedback that I received on the dialectical journal helped me a lot to find what I should focus on for the CER. Therefore, I can say that my understanding of literary devices improved more than I expected as I discovered new literary devices and their effect on the audience on the text, which is my biggest success.

For me, the particularly challenging part about this unit was meeting the deadline. I thought I am able to meet the deadlines, so I set it very tight without considering other assignments. As a result, I could not meet the deadlines for both dialectical journal and CER although I stayed up all night working. Therefore, I can say that I am still developing my skills in meeting deadlines, which gives Needs Improvement for my Time management. I willingly received and accepted your feedbacks, so I am satisfactory for the willingness to accept feedback. I generally was prepared for the class, which gives satisfactory my preparation. Therefore, I think I am in a satisfactory standard for responsibility in general. I set realistic goals and reflected them, so I get satisfactory for independent learning. I remained focused and on task, so I am in a satisfactory standard for engagement. Lastly, I was willing to accept a challenge with teacher prompting, so I get satisfactory for perseverance. Thus, I generally am in a satisfactory standard for attitude.

As I mentioned at the front, my weakest point is time management. Therefore, improving my time management skill is the first priority for me to perform better relating to SALs. For this semester, I had some time wasted some times because I was staying home the whole time. Therefore, I could not meet my deadline and could not revise my work. That’s why the quality of my dialectical journal was awful. To minimize wasted time, I should make my daily schedule. This way, I will be able to manage my time better and revise my work before I turn it in. In English 10, my ultimate goal is to improve my writing skills. Unlike others, English is not my mother tongue, so I often feel difficulties when writing essays. I am aiming to complete IB program, which is full of essay assignments, so it is essential for me to have fancy writing skills. To do so, I am aiming to read many books during summer break so that my writing improves.
