The End For a Freshman’s English Class

Grade 9 English has been such a great journey for me, it has not only helped me develop as an English student but also as an individual, and as a thinker. Especially, the last unit – “What’s So Funny” was a particularly interesting one for me, since it was my first time truly  considering how do speakers and poets and play-writers make their work funny. Through my investigation of the play “Mother Figure”, the poem “Frau Freud” and many other activities I did in this unit, I’ve learnt that the tone, diction and the context of the language are critical in determining whether the piece of work is funny or not. In particular, irony and satire is one common way for authors to make their work comedic, yet still, have a purpose or message. Some literary devices also assist in making a work humorous, like rhyming pattern in the poem Frau Freud, “the dick, prick, dipstick and wick…” or confusion in the play “Mother Figure”,

“Terry: Eh?

Rosemary: What?”

However, there is still a lot to humour that I do not know yet, like how do speakers time their joke so it will be more effective, or how do poets use rhyming patterns to make it sound more light-hearted and funny.

Unfortunately, I failed to complete my SMART goal I’ve set at the beginning of the unit. I did submit all of my work, but my goal explicitly said “in time” and “with the best quality”. Because there were a lot of other tests and projects going on, I had failed to submit my play analysis on time, and I will admit it wasn’t my best work this year. That is also the hardest thing about this unit – time management. Not going to lie, I was heavily overwhelmed at the start of this unit. I must’ve not organise my days properly, and that led to me lacking behind in many classes, including English. One thing I would’ve done differently is to have a look at what my tasks are before blindly setting plans for them since I was wildly underestimating the time it will take me to finish the 5 journals.

Everything has a silver lining though, and I did see a few success in this unit. In particular, I am quite happy with my analysis of the play. It was my first time dealing with a “modern play” (not Shakespeare or those older plays), and also my first time working with comedic devices. Even though I’ve got some comedic devices wrong when I was writing my journals, I am overall happy that I’ve identified a few.

Regarding my Student as Learner standard, I believe I deserve a Satisfactory for my “responsibility” and Exemplary for “attitude”, here is why. I gave myself a Satisfactory for “responsibility ” standard because I have been using teachers’ and peer’s feedback well, and was decently organised. However, I did not complete all my work on time, so that prevents me to deserve an Exemplary. For this strand of the SAL, I need to start proactively requesting feedback, perhaps before I submit the work even. I never really did that, and only went to the teacher when I was confused about something or need help. If I go to the teacher for feedback before I submit I can ensure that my work is all correct and will be approved by the teacher. For my “attitude” strand, I gave myself an Exemplary because I always have a good outlook on my study. I always made sure that I stayed on task, and take initiative for my work. One thing I can still work on, however, is to work on my goal setting, maybe have some short term goals instead of one large long term goal to guide myself through this unit.

Anyways, it will be only a few weeks until I finish my freshman year of High School. Overall, I am pleased with my year in English. Even though I started quite slow, I eventually caught up to the standard and had some great performances for different tasks that I am very proud of. I am definitely looking forward to English 10. My goal for next year is to increase my reading amount. It is quite ironic that that is already my plan I set last August at the start of this year. I did make some solid progress, like reading at least for the required class amount every other day and reading more in the weekends, but I still feel like I have a lot to improve on. Specifically, I need to venture out to more genres and types of books, or read from authors from different cultures, and not just from the “classic English canon”. Another goal I have is to increase my vocabulary. Honestly, I feel like I haven’t made that much progress in increasing my vocabulary amount since preparing for the SSAT, and that’s definitely one area I will look to expand upon next year since I believe it’ll help me greatly to write better, read deeper and communicate clearer. But enough said, overall I am just looking forward to continuing my study in English, meet new classmates and continue to work with some fantastic teachers. Thank you to everyone that made my English 9 such a productive and enjoyable time, have a good summer.

Unit 2 Drawing Portfolio

The Purpose of Drawing/Sketching When Designing

– Observational drawing is important is design because it is the starting point of every product and it can also be where you get your inspiration from, which is in the define and inquire stage. It can be your first draft of a product or it can be a recording of a thing or place that caught your eye and you feel like it  can be helpful for your design later.

– The point of visualisation drawing is helping to communicate new ideas quickly, to support verbal communication, to confirm understanding, to form a written record for later reference, to build complex ideas, and to explain difficult concepts which allowed people to take ideas in their head and to try them out on paper. This can be used in create and improve but also can be used in  develop and plan.

– The concept of Disruptus  can help us as designers immensely when we are stuck on a topic and can’t come up with solutions because it puts your brain into a rapid fire idea thinking mode to speed up your creative to come up with more ideas in a shorter amount of time. After doing this exercise, just exclude some solutions you feel will not work and leave the best ones to then develop and improve.

Felix’s Profound Design Poster

In this first project of the elective Product Design with Mr. Griffin, we mainly focused on learning how to trace pictures in Adobe Illustrator CS6 on our computers. The pictures were self portraits of us and we basically used the pen tool in illustrator to trace the outlines of our portraits. Then we filled the outlines in with different colors to show the layers of the picture. The hardest parts of this process was the different layers we had to create and especially the shadows we had to show with different shades of the same color. I had to make decisions on where to change the tone of color and where to outline for those parts. I overcame this challenge by asking Mr. Griffin and some of my friends for help, and after I listened to their explanations, I focused and overcame the challenge.

The aesthetics of this self portrait poster reflects my style as a designer because my style when copying or changing a picture that was already made is a simple but abstract way that still show the details but not as much as the original picture so then it will be unique. This also show the style of my design with some parts having original colors and some parts more unique and having crazy colors that are way different than the original picture.

My Poster:

Felix Product Design

Design Challenge #1

What will I repeat?

I will repeat the same design process and my same open-minded way of coming up with a creative solution. I will use the same confident way of presenting my product at the end.

What will I avoid?

I should avoid doing minimal research in define and inquire and including minimal detail on the poster.  I will do more research on my next design challenge and therefore putting more details in my poster.

Which literation strategy did you use? Would you use it again? Why/why not?

In this project, based on the information and feedback I got, I kept on changing my design plan but my big picture did not change, so the strategy was very organized, I will use this again because it is one of the best ways to improve my product.

What did you enjoy in the planning stage?

I enjoyed just coming up with a solution and just putting ideas out there and being creative.

How will you better include concepts from responsive design in your next challenge?

I will care more about the environment by being more environmentally friendly and green when making my product.

What does your poster show about you as a learner?

My poster has colours, descriptions, different fonts, and models. This shows that I am very organized and creative when doing work.

Overall, I think that I should do more research on my next project and be more environmentally friendly when making my solution.

D-Log presentation reflection

In this presentation for my product, I got some very good feedback on my speech and product. Some of the important feedback was: I did well putting out hand gestures and projection for my voice, I just needed to explain more clearly and explain more in detail about my product and answer the two questions more clearly. I will try to work on that next time by thinking about all the things I need to work on before my presentation and do my best when presenting. The ultimate goal for myself is probably more confident and speak with fewer filler words and explain my product in more detail.

Reading Goal for G9

I chose to read this book because it was a Edgar Award finalist and also the cover and the title were very mysterious and interesting. I really wanted to dig into this exquisite book to find out more. In this school year, I want to encourage myself to read more actively everyday and read deeper. I want to read a least half an hour everyday for pleasure.

Project Space Race

The project we did for space race was sending a rover and a satellite to Kepler 16b and its moon. After we did research by rover and satellite, we will send tourist to that exoplanet for tourism. We make money be tourism on Kepler 16b. I thought the over exhibition was very successful because we earned 5 billion and the investors were happy. The challenge for our group during the exhibition was to answer the investors’ difficult questions, some we can’t even answer but we did our best to answer. The investors took away a lot of knowledge for Kepler 16b and our project. The only thing they were confused about was the technology we are going to use to get to a exoplanet 200 light years away. This long project was overall fun and amazing.

The most interesting thing I learned in Project Space Race is about the Exoplanet called Kepler 16b. Kepler 16b is the planet that our group researched and based our project on, so we know about this planet the most out of everyone in the class. This knowledge helped me to understand the future considerations for habitable planets. Completing this project, I learned that I work well and collaborate well with a group in projects. For example, we split the different parts of this project into four parts, so each person is responsible to manage and finish their part. Before this project, I used to think it was going to take a long time until humans are going to find a habitable planet, now I think that humans can be habited on any exoplanet, it’s just the way to get to that planet is difficult. The driving question impacts me or my community because innovation is what carries our community forward into the future, with new technology and inventions. Competition, collaboration, and technology drives innovation, because if you don’t have market economy, there is no innovation. Without innovation, our community will still be using old things with old technology, and there will be no going forward. Looking back on this Project Space Race, I realize that the most important and the center of this project is to let us innovate, to let us create our own rovers, companies, and our own way to get to our chosen exoplanet. Everything is done and chosen by ourselves and everything is created by us. We used our imagination to innovate our own space project.

Great One Day Experience At The WenYu River And The Village

In the One Day Photography activity, I practiced and improved my photography skills at the WenYu river and a village beside BSB. I think I practiced portrait mode the most while I was taking my photos because I wanted to practice focusing on on item or person and then making the background blurred out. It is my favorite effect. The two important things I learned today are the angle and the direction of light source for a photo. The most difficult challenge I faced was that I had to always keep my phone straight and not let it slant sideways when taking photos in weird, uneasy angles. I overcame this challenge by using the flat ground or some sticks to use as a tripod. Overall, this One Day photography experience was great.
