Project 300SL Cosmos

In this “Personalize it” ignite week, I decided to partner up with Christopher and build a car model kit plus some paint work. Christopher came up with the idea of doing car model kits and the videos that both he showed me and I watched on my own inspired me to do this project. Cars are our passion and we enjoy collecting car models, watching videos about cars, talking about cars, and even researching about cars. This is why we were so interested and excited about making our own car models. Christopher is the person who inspired me to do this because he is already experienced but I am only doing it for the first time. I think this process will be challenging because there are so much details included and I need to be very precise and focused. I think I will do great because I always do well on what I enjoy doing. The three pictures below are photos I took of the beginning of the whole process which I am currently in now:

Flat Six Engine of the car
Metallic Blue painted body part
Lower and upper frame structure of the car

It was challenging to assemble some little pieces for both the engine and the structure but I problem solved by sticking the pieces onto my finger, then gluing it to the whole thing. This is my plan for the whole ignite week:

In the continued process of Create and Improve, I made the interior of the car, assembled the doors and the front hooded, painted everything, putted the three layers/parts of the car together, and added a lot of little details to the whole car.

Three layers/part of the car

Finished product (Interior)The challenges I had with this car model kit was gluing the small parts to the whole car both in the exterior and the interior. I problem solved by using tweezers for some parts and using other methods and technics for other bigger parts. Doing this Ignite Week made me improve in both problem solving, endurance, patience skills. This is my Final Product:

Project Capstone: Making a Creative China

Some interesting things I learned about are: How to write an argumentative essay, how to write in a formal tone, and how to create a documentary video with interviews. These things helped me understand how this project is a combination of all the skills we learned in FA7 and FA8. For example, we had projects that were based on pollution around the globe in both seventh and eighth grade FA. We also learned how to create animation and other kinds of videos in eighth grade FA. In this Capstone project, we used both skills that were learnt before. Completing this project, I learned that in my writing, I lack in linking my evidence back to my original claim and point. For example, in my argumentative essay about Chinese local schools lacking in creativity for their education systems, some of the evidence in my first body paragraph didn’t really connect with my big thesis statement, and that some of the points didn’t match. Before this project, I used to think that raising awareness and making big changes were not possible, but now I think that it is possible if your action is very persuasive and it influences people one by one. The driving question impacts me and my community because making a change for my community is really important because everyone wants their societies to have no more issues. Looking back on the Capstone Project, I realize that this is the capstone and the very top and end of our middle school FA years and that it is a combination of everything we learned in FA. This project is the most complicated and difficult one.

Phase 1: In this phase of the project, we began to research on the SDGs, and chose  our topics for the project. We created our compelling question and the prediction model of our outcome. We also created our surveys and went to the Hutong twice. We built the basic foundation for our project in phase 1.

Phase 2: In this phase of the project, we did all the research for our topics and did our annotated bibliography for our sources. After gathering all the information and sources, we wrote our rational writing essay. We also created a final model to map out the final outcome of our project.

Phase 3: In this last phase of the project, we created our final call to action video to inspire and raise awareness for change. We needed to address and explain the problem first, then build empathy for the topic. At last, there needs to be a part that inspires action and lets other people make change.

Supreme Custom Skateboard

I am going to create a Supreme X Louis Vuitton print on my skateboard because this is my favorite collaboration of two brands, the print also looks pretty cool.

The challenges I might face are probably going to be drawing the print and the skateboard perfectly, or else it won’t look as professional. The print is actually very difficult to draw so it is a challenge for me.

My target audience is probably middle school students like me, because a lot of these people like these brands especially Supreme.

I am going to do a rough sketch on a whiteboard first, then do a perfect sketch on a white paper to then trace onto the skateboard. At last, I will create a infographic to explain the process and the main idea of this skateboard.

First Sketch on White Board.

In this project, I created and painted two skateboard designs and both sides of the skateboard. The designs that I chose were Supreme X Louis Vuitton and one side, and a costumed Louis Vuitton X Off White X AJ1 shoe on the other side of the board. Both designs had different color way than the actual real design on the internet, so it was original. I chose these two designs because they were my interests and I really wanted to change their color way and make them into original art work. In the process of drawing and painting on the board, I used acrylic paint marker, spray paint, and a little bit of whiteboard marker. I was overall happy with the results and how the colors turned out.

The only challenge that I had was the acrylic paint marker was too thick so it was difficult to do the detailed little bits of the design. This is why I had to use the white board marker to draw the details because it was way thinner and easier to use.

Project Space Race

The project we did for space race was sending a rover and a satellite to Kepler 16b and its moon. After we did research by rover and satellite, we will send tourist to that exoplanet for tourism. We make money be tourism on Kepler 16b. I thought the over exhibition was very successful because we earned 5 billion and the investors were happy. The challenge for our group during the exhibition was to answer the investors’ difficult questions, some we can’t even answer but we did our best to answer. The investors took away a lot of knowledge for Kepler 16b and our project. The only thing they were confused about was the technology we are going to use to get to a exoplanet 200 light years away. This long project was overall fun and amazing.

The most interesting thing I learned in Project Space Race is about the Exoplanet called Kepler 16b. Kepler 16b is the planet that our group researched and based our project on, so we know about this planet the most out of everyone in the class. This knowledge helped me to understand the future considerations for habitable planets. Completing this project, I learned that I work well and collaborate well with a group in projects. For example, we split the different parts of this project into four parts, so each person is responsible to manage and finish their part. Before this project, I used to think it was going to take a long time until humans are going to find a habitable planet, now I think that humans can be habited on any exoplanet, it’s just the way to get to that planet is difficult. The driving question impacts me or my community because innovation is what carries our community forward into the future, with new technology and inventions. Competition, collaboration, and technology drives innovation, because if you don’t have market economy, there is no innovation. Without innovation, our community will still be using old things with old technology, and there will be no going forward. Looking back on this Project Space Race, I realize that the most important and the center of this project is to let us innovate, to let us create our own rovers, companies, and our own way to get to our chosen exoplanet. Everything is done and chosen by ourselves and everything is created by us. We used our imagination to innovate our own space project.

Great One Day Experience At The WenYu River And The Village

In the One Day Photography activity, I practiced and improved my photography skills at the WenYu river and a village beside BSB. I think I practiced portrait mode the most while I was taking my photos because I wanted to practice focusing on on item or person and then making the background blurred out. It is my favorite effect. The two important things I learned today are the angle and the direction of light source for a photo. The most difficult challenge I faced was that I had to always keep my phone straight and not let it slant sideways when taking photos in weird, uneasy angles. I overcame this challenge by using the flat ground or some sticks to use as a tripod. Overall, this One Day photography experience was great.

What Important ideas did people take away?

The main idea a lot of my audience took away was the fact that single use plastics that we throw away can actually end up affecting ourselves.

Were they surprised or confused about anything?

The first graders were scared because of the outcomes and impacts that single use plastic create, when they are disposed.

Were you able to change their thinking about buying stuff?

Yes, because when the kids got scared because of the impacts, they wanted to stop using the plastics.

Did they learn anything about the damage being caused to our planet?

Yes, they learned about how much damage was caused by plastics to the animals and to us humans.

What would you do differently on your next iteration?

I would probably want to include more facts and information so then the audience can learn more about this problem.

Answer to the Driving Question:

Consumption is when consumers buy products from a store or online, and is also where the golden arrow of the whole cycle is. Sustainability is when something or a cycle can be used and stay in its original form for a long period of time. The relationship between them happens throughout the whole cycle but the consumption and what you buy. If you buy a product just for the sake of buying it, then it will only be in your hands for a few days, and then you will throw it away after. That will be a not sustainable consumption. If you buy a product that is reusable for a long time, then it is a sustainable consumption. For example, in this project, we learned about how plastics affect the planet. We learned about different types of plastic and how they are made. We also learned the cycle of the plastic from extraction to disposal, and the bad impacts it made throughout the life cycle. The single-use plastics will be not sustainable because after you use it, there will be no reuse and you will just throw it away and all the chemicals will create a bad impact on the earth. This is why people need to buy reusable items in consumption because that will help everything. We can use many different alternatives to substitute the use of single-use plastics. For example, you can drink out of a water fountain instead of using plastic bottles.

Website For 庆湖有机农场

In this ignite week, my three group members and I made a website for a local organic farm called 庆湖有机农场. At the start of the week, everyone went to the farm and witnessed the environment and people that are working there. Each group figured out what the farm needed the most and each group created a product. My group created an advertising website for the farm so they can have more customers come and make more money. Our success was that we had already learned how to make websites and how to advertise product so it was easy for us. Our challenge was that many groups had to just do a product, but our group had to do a video about the farm and a website to put the video on. I improved on communication and collaboration by doing teamwork with my teammates and talking to the farm workers. I improved in creativity by working on the website and the video. I learned how to take a product and make it better. This will help me in the future.
