“Hero” Scene Analysis

“Hero” is set in ancient China, where the country is in violent conflicts for power and unification. A group of assassins from Zhao attempted to assassinate Qin King but failed because of multiple renunciations. Later, Qin unifies the seven kingdoms and became the emperor of China.

This scene (1:20-1:22) is a flashback through Flying Snow’s description. Three years ago, Broken Sword and Flying Snow broke into the palace to kill Qin, but Broken Sword gave up. In this scene, slow-motion, extreme close-up shots, and close-up shots have been utilized to indicate Broken Sword’s relinquishment of his assassination and foreshadow events later on.

1:21:01 Sound & Language

The green color shows one of the versions of the story and is one that actually occurred. Throughout this scene, there is a complete absence of dialogues. The only sound present is a bleak musical background and diegetic sound.

1:20:38 Slow Motion & ECU

Slow-motion has been utilized during the assassination when Qin’s sword slips out of his hand during Broken sword’s fierce attack and the sword flies away. The frame also freezes where the sword struck the column, indicating the King just lost his protecting weapon. This creates suspense and establishes a tense mood where the King is now standing armless in front of an approaching assassin.

The extreme close-up shot on the King’s neck clarifies the suspense created previously and emphasizes Broken Sword’s choice of renouncing the assassination for a greater purpose. The framing on the King’s subtle injury within his neck, as shown by the streak of blood, indicates Broken Sword only wounded the King slightly despite he could easily exert a more powerful force that ends the King’s life, which is contrary to the audience’s expectation. The enlargement of a frame reveals significant details to the audience, fulfilling and justifying the vacancy of a scene that has not been shown within the film and potently reverses the plot. More importantly, this scene indirectly informs the audience of Broken’s Sword’s abandonment of assassination, otherwise, there should be a stream of blood instead of an innocuous scratch. This sets up and foreshadows a future event in that history might repeat itself and further assassinations will also end in vain due to Broken Sword’s obstruction, just as what happened when Nameless forwent his mission.

1:21:15 CU

The focal point later falls on Flying Snow’s facial expression, portraying solemn and disappointment. Based on this centered close-up shot, it can be inferred that Flying Snow is extremely stupefied and dismayed at the fact that Broken Sword gives up an opportunity within striking. The pause on Flying Snow’s dismal face reveals the assassination is now doomed to fail as she has no power to revert and change the situation, and she is disappointed by Broken Sword’s choice. Then, the abrupt shift from this scene back to the present timeline (white) suggests the assassination resulted in vain because of Broken Sword and explains the underlying cause of the alienated relationship between Snow and Sword, justifying the future plot of Snow’s attack on Sword and Sword’s suicidal act.

IDU – Reflective Blog Post

Teammates: Jasmine, Angela, Monika


Our team had an amazing experience together during the IDU unit and learned the key to collaboration.

Teammate Angela is my good friend. But I didn’t interact with Monika for a long time. The last time I remember talking to her was in 6th grade ASA. But surprisingly, our team collaborated well throughout the project and succeeded in making it to the final. Based on the questionnaire we took, we all prefer democracy team relationship. I’m more a collaborative teammate, while Monika often brought out new ideas, and Angela always critic our thoughts. When we have conflicts, I tried to bring us back together, talk the whole problem out, and try to select the best decision.

For the norms of collaboration, our team rank them as follows:

-Put ideas on the table

-Pay attention to self and others




-Presume positive intentions

-Put inquiry at the center

Our team was doing really well at putting ideas at the table. This is also extremely important since we need everyone’s thoughts before the discussion. It is also an easy norm to implement: everyone just share what they think.

Collaboration really is, valuable, especially when it comes to the final presentation. Our team cannot reach the final step without any of us. Also when it comes to thorny problems, it’s better to solve it as a whole rather than one/two people’s arbitrary thoughts.

We did not really have conflict for most of the time. Expect once we were arguing hard on where to put the global issue in the script, in the end, Monika and I finally gave in and gave consent to Angela to put it in the conclusion. We always worked together, communicated together, shared thoughts together.

The whole project was challenging, to me, the most difficult part was the beginning.  At the start of the project, we eventually faced problems and setbacks, we have spent lessons after lessons trying to figure out ideas… But in the end, it worked out satisfactory. The things we worried about did not happen, instead, confidence and cohesive conquered fears. Our team always worried about presenting in front of the community, but we end up presenting in front of the whole grade. During the journey of this project, there were always surprises and unexpected challenges, but we overcame it, as a team.

When a team actually stick together, no conflicts and struggles can separate them apart. Being cohesive is also to not exclude anyone out, everyone is equal to share their idea and thoughts, like a circle. Just like our team JAMMY DODGERS this time, with enough amount of cohesion and collaboration, we reached success.

Goals 2018-2019

-Academic Goal: I will try to achieve all “Meeting” grades for all classes, on all assignments. I want to look and the rubric before every test and assessments.

I will actively work towards this goal by learning hard during class, do my homework on time, listen to the teachers carefully when they are teaching, and ask questions no matter what.

-Wellness Goal: I want to increase my strength and muscle endurance, specifically, the length that I can hold a plank.

I will actively work towards this goal by doing more exercise and activities when I have free time. This can increase my energetic. I am taking badminton classes now, maybe I will  exercise more in the future.

-Personal Goal: I need to paint at least 3 paintings that satisfies me by the end of the year.

I will actively work towards this goal by carefully choosing what I’m going to draw each class, and draw the art work neatly. Listen to the teacher’s advice, and ask questions if I have concerns.

My First Week Back At School

My first week back at school 

  • The best part of my first week at school was I meet a lot of new people and new teacher, they are all very nice. I also get to learn a lot new things in 7th grade.
  • During the first week, I didn’t really enjoy the homeroom mentoring time before lunch because our break got short, I don’t have time to eat stuff so I’m always hungry.
  • During EAL time, I want to focus on improving my vocabulary because I don’t understand a few words in class, and sometimes it will drives me crazy and affect my work.

I would like to share this article – Kids and teens develop empathy for others by taking care of animals from Newsela because I think it’s important for all of us to read. It’s not just about interesting or not, it’s about why you should care about animals. Animals have feelings too, like us. If you treat them very well, they will thank you and know you are their master. But if you don’t care about them at all, they will be mad at you or maybe try to run away. This article also teaches me to be more responsible to animals.
