The dimmer is the place where all the light source is connected to. It controls the lights of the theater and makes sure that they are working well. Interestingly, there is a distinct difference between the lights in the original theatre and the elementary theatre. The dimmer produces an abundant amount of heat since it includes the process of burning. In contrast, the elementary theatre used LED lights, which did not create much heat. The change in light technology affected the energy efficiency of a theatre. I did not think that the theatre would also consider how efficient the lighting is.
The catwalk is a pathway on top of the audience seats where props can be installed. It was interesting to be walking on the audience seats, and it made me exciting to imagine walking on the catwalk when an actual play is going on in the theatre. I have been to many theatre productions, but I never imagined that there would be a pathway that people would walk on top. The new perspective of the theatre was interesting.
Being able to control the spotlight was a new experience. When watching a musical or a play, I have always wondered how the spotlights were functioning. By learning that moving the spotlight is a skill, I thought back to the productions I saw in the past. When I tried moving the spotlights, it was difficult to move it smoothly on the right spot since it was heavy. Through this experience, I realized that a large amount of effort is needed to move the spotlight at the right time and in the right place.
I liked the tour around the theatre spaces. I enjoyed the fact that I was able to see the theatre from multiple perspectives. I want to learn more about the lighting booth and want to experiment with it. This tour was an opportunity for me to think about people backstage for the productions I have watched as an audience.
