Sherman Alexie – The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

From this ted talk, I learnt the history of the Indians and how they suffered in the 1800s. One question I still have is: why would the United States sign treaties with the Indians if the U.S. is going to break them? On page 7 of “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” the narrator repeatedly said that he is poor. After watching this Ted talk, I realized that the reason to this is due the fact that the U.S. government treated the Indians inhumanly. In addition, the U.S. government did not allow the people in the reservations to have jobs, this makes them think that they deserve to be poor. I also learnt that the violence in the reservation is because of the high rates of alcoholism and poverty. I think Sherman Alexie chose to write this for young adults because the perception of young adults is generally more flexible and capable of obtaining new information. The tone he uses throughout the book to capture the attention of the audience and allows us to follow the story through the lens of Junior. The drawings in the story gives us insight to Junior while maintaining the tone.
