Fish Cheeks

“Change the way you speak about yourself and you will change your life”  said Joel Osteen. The narrator learns an important lesson during a dinner . In the story “Fish Cheeks”, by Amy Tan. We can see that the protagonist Amy is ashamed of who she is, but learns a lesson about being proud of her difference.

We can see that Amy wants to be an American. According to the text when Amy says “I prayed for… a slim new American nose” (Amy 1). Proves that she wanted to look like an American. And also when her father made her awkward: “My father Poked his chopsticks just below the fish eye and plucked out the soft meat ‘Amy, your favorite food’ he said offering me the tender fish cheek. I want to disappear” (1). In the text, Amy wants to disappear because she feels embarrassed about their traditions and the food they ate. And also when she said that she wanted to dress like the America girls This also shows that she doesn’t want to be Chinese and wanted to look like and also dress like those American girls. However, in the end of the story, Amy learns a lesson about thinking positive about her difference. After the dinner her mother noticed that she was unhappy so her mother said “you want to be the same as American girls… but inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame” (2). Amy didn’t disagree with her mother finally notices that she is special to be different than others. Long after Amy had gotten over her crush on Robert.

The girl or the bass? (found poem)

The found poem above was taken from page 4 of the story Bass, River and Sheila Mant by: W.D. Wetherell. The story shows the protagonist struggling with an internal conflict. In the rising action of the story, this conflict shows the protagonist struggling on choosing the girl or his passions. In the end, he chooses the girl and cut the line that was holding the bass (gave up his passion). The conflict forced the character to make a decision between the girl and the bass

in the end of the story the boy regretted his decision, and if he was going to pick the decision again he is going to choose the girl
