Creating Fashion Items with Scrap Fabric and Old T-shirts

For OneDay, I chose to work on textiles and handicrafts. I’ve always enjoyed making things and crafting, so it was an easy choice for me. I decided to work on making headbands from scrap fabrics and old t-shirts.

This was my workstation after starting. Ms Krista provided me with rolls of elastic, scrap fabrics and a sewing machine. I also brought in some old t-shirts to work with.

Firstly, I spent quite a while trying to figure out how the sewing machine worked because it was very different from the one I use at home.

I decided to make different styles of headbands. For a start, I made a fabric headband with a different patterned fabric on each side by following a youtube tutorial. I spent the longest time on this because it was my first time trying to make a fabric headband, and the results were pleasing, though it was slightly short.

 These were the final results.

For the second style, I cut some old t-shirts for the materials, and used a braiding technique for this.

This was taken during the process.

 Final results.

For the last two, I made a crossed-over headband using an old tie-dye t-shirt, and a knotted headband using a yellow t-shirt.

 Final results.

Overall, I learnt a lot from OneDay. I managed to create new things from recycled materials, and learnt new crafting skills. Creating new things from old materials is much cheaper than store-bought products, and makes it much more customisable. During OneDay, I also made new friends. I got to know Kelly, Olivia, Jenna, and Michelle better, and helped each other. I loved the overall experience, and am looking forward to next year!
