Curry’s letter back to Riley
On November 29th, Riley Morrison, a 9-year-old girl from Napa, California received a hand-written letter from Stephen Curry, star of NBA team Golden State Warriors. Riley had previously written a letter to Curry, explaining how she wanted to get a pair of Curry 5 basketball shoes from Under Armour’s website, but there weren’t any sizes for girls. Riley was facing a problem that was unfair to girls and was able to speak up about it. “I know you support girl athletes because you have two daughters and you host an all-girls basketball camp. I hope you can work with Under Armour to change this because girls want to rock the Curry 5s too,” Riley said in her letter. To her surprise, Curry responded to her with his own hand-written letter. He claimed that he has been working on this issue together with Under Armour for the past two days, and she’ll be one of the first kids to receive the Curry 6’s. He even invited her to celebrate International Women’s Day with him in Oakland.
I think that it’s so brave for Riley to stand up for women, even at such a young age. I also think that Curry handled this problem perfectly, and gained him an even better reputation than what he already has. Curry fixed this problem as fast as possible, after seeing Riley’s letter, and not only responded to her, and showed his support for International Women’s Day in March 2019. Sexism is a problem worldwide, and many young women and girls were speaking up against it. Riley’s letter inspired people to take action about the problems. Riley tells Teen Vogue that she wrote the letter because “it seems unfair that the shoes are only in the boys’ section and not in the girls’ section,” and that she “wanted to help make things equal for all girls, because girls play basketball too.” The younger generation is facing this problem with determination, so why cannot the older generations do so as well? Gender equality is not just a dream, it can be true if we all work towards this goal together.
What are your thoughts on how Riley stood up for women in sports?
Do you think Curry handled this situation well? Why or why not?

The Boxers do not deserve a bad rap because they were only trying to rid their country of foreign influences because they believed that these foreign influences were depriving China of their culture. It was the Westerners that attacked and tried to take territory from China first, and they wanted to convert the Chinese into Christians. The government wasn’t powerful enough to fight back the foreigners themselves, so the people took matters into their own hands. Even though they failed to drive the foreigners away at the end, they were brave to fight against foreign forces on their own.
I chose to have a rose in the centre of my book cover for How to Stop Time by Matt Haig because it is a well-known symbol of love, as the book suggests a theme of love. The rose also represents the character Rose (Tom’s wife from the Middle Ages) as everything he sees or does, from the past and of his “future,” reminds him of his lost lover.
“All you can do with the past is carry it around, feeling its weight slowly increase, praying it never crushes you completely.” (Page 61)
The two hands reaching for the rose represents the past and the future of the main character Tom Hazard, because he was always searching for love, reaching out to love in his past and later on in the “future” of the book. The rose is growing out from the hourglass (a symbol of time that also represents a theme in How to Stop Time,) to show love from time, and the love that Tom had felt from the time he spent with Rose and Camille. I chose this background because the colour blue represents tranquility, calmness, and depression like Tom is in most of the novel. The background fades a little in the middle, to focus on the rose in the centre of the cover.
I chose to use the font “Black Ops One” for the title because it had a geometric look to it, and reminded me of the “future.” I used the quote “And, just as it only takes a moment to die, it only takes a moment to live.” because it represented the theme of time in the novel in a simple sentence, and it is a quote that hooks the reader and keeps the reader interested in what will happen in the novel. The one-cent recommendations are from JK Rowling and the Guardian because JK Rowling is the world-wide famous author of the Harry Potter series and The Guardian is a Newspaper from Britain, just like the author of How to Stop Time, Matt Haig.
