Downstream

Our Capstone movie is about SDG goal #6 Water and Sanitation. Our movie includes information on water and sanitation is beijing as well as at ISB and how ISB provides us with clean water. It shows us why and what we should do to improve our water. The process of making our movie didn’t take that long. We first planned out the scenes we wanted in our movie. Maxim wrote the script and we started to film the next day. After we filmed the scenes, we found background music and then started to edit and cut the clips. Recording us speaking didnt take long. Since i have made movies using imovie, it wasnt that hard cutting and splitting the clips. We were able to finish everything in time because Maxim and I were able to complete our job we were assigned to eachother. We were able to work together and use our time wisely. I was able to finish editing in time and Maxim also found many of the videos and we did all of that in a small amount of time.

Robot Petting Zoo

3 Thoughts

  • My biggest success was…

The biggest achievement we made during this process from building the robot to programing it and then finally sharing it, is probably getting our kangaroo to work in a short amount of time. We made mistakes throughout the process of making our robot so we made a lot of adjustments, but were able to code on time.

  • My biggest obstacle was…

Our biggest obstacle was probably organizing the time to work on our robot. Since we had trips, we got less time to work on it together. We had to find a time where we could work on it after school.

  • Skills that I learned or developed were…

When we were building the robot, I learned how to connect the different perices in different ways using different materials. I developed my coding skills when we were trying to make the nose move. I also learned how to connect the different wires to the arduino.

Feed Characterisation

Imagine yourself flying to the moon where there are many stores and places to keep you entertained for hours. Go to a restaurant and eat with your friends, and at night, go to a night club to dance. Sounds fun right? The book Feed is set in the dystopian future where people have something called a “feed” in their brain. Feed is an advanced technology and entertainment system that is kind of like our phones today, giving us notifications, buy stuff, and it’s also a social network. The one of the main characters, Titus, is a teenage boy that went to the moon with his friends. He meets the other main character, Violet, and when they went to a party, a mysterious man hacked their feed. Waking up in the hospital, they learn about what happened to them, and that changed their life, personality, and thoughts. The character I chose to show their characterization in the book is Violet Durn.

Violet is someone who is tall and cold when you first meet or see her appearance. Throughout the book, in the beginning, Violet was the kind of girl who is smart and an introvert person. She isn’t interested in any trend and she very actual, like someone who is realistic. She isn’t the type of person who is chill, and that makes her unpopular. These things make her independent at the end. Violet is a teenage girl who is really smart. “And I sat there with my palms pressed into my forehead, thinking about Violet, at home being smart.” (pg. 110) When Titus saw her, he couldn’t stop starring at her. “She was the most beautiful girl, like, ever. She was watching our stupidity.” (pg. 13) “She had short blond hair. Her face, it was like, I don’t know, it was beautiful.” (pg. 13) Even though they got together, there are still times when Titus or his friends don’t like her personality. After the incident happened, Violet wanted to make herself an anonymous person, so feed couldn’t recognize her. When she talked about political topics or when she was talking about all these complicated things, Titus didn’t really like who she was at that time. “I hated it when she got like this, because then she wasn’t herself, I mean, she wasn’t like this playful person who drags me around the mall doing crazy shit…” (pg. 111) Lastly, she can be a little too sensitive which can be a good and a bad thing, but that leads to her being serious about the problem. “I breathed, loud and kind of angry. Why are we going away? Because they are making fun of me… well, maybe you shouldn’t, you know show off like that.” In the end, because of her awareness towards her malfunction, she becomes independent. Since she is actually smart, that helps her go through this journey, while Titus and his friends are still “controlled” by feed. Being independent is always a good way to solve problems, because you trust yourself.

I think Violet connects to this superhero in DC. Wonder woman. The world today has been aware of gender inequality and I think both characters show that there are female heroes. In the Wonder woman movie, she has been displayed as a character who is strong, independent, and compassionate hero. In some ways, Violet can relate with her personality. First off, wonder woman meets a boy who is a spy called Steve Trevor, but she leaves him to go fight in the war. Violet meets Titus but, in the end, she broke up with him and went by herself trying to fight feed. Wonder woman is the type of person who is devoted to her goals and has great belief and confidence in herself. Even when she goes through hard challenges, she eventually succeeds. To be invisible from feed, violet takes her time, gathering all the information and materials to do so. Even when Titus doesn’t help her, she would manage things by herself. When Titus friends have the opposite opinion as her, she sticks with it until the end, making her someone who is persistent, like Wonder woman. Lastly, curiosity leads both of them to find out the truth about the problem that everyone thinks it’s for the better. In the end, they both did it, either by themselves, or with the help of some family members, but, they both trusted and depended on themselves to make that change. “It’s not about what we deserve. It’s about what we believe.”- Wonder woman

Chinese Cultural Revolution Journal

The journal is written by a 17-year-old girl named Cheng Mei Ling as she goes through the Chinese Cultural Revolution. From the massacre, to leaving her brother because of the “Up the Mountains, down to the countryside” movement, and then finally Mao’s death, she learned many new things and faced different challenges. As she journeys through this revolution, she is faced with the challenge of doing thing by herself with no one to help her. From her days at school to hard work in the countryside, from a nice neighborhood to street filled with the blood from the struggles of people, she learned that everything comes with a price. As she faced conflict by herself, she also learned thatwhen you need help, turn to your family, but when there’s no family, turn to yourself. The big theme in my story is that everything comes with a price. She had to work hard in order to survive the harsh life in the countryside while having to worry about keeping her thoughts about Mao safe. In return of the hard work, she was able to go through the hard times of the revolution and make it alive. This not only applied to her, but the whole country sacrificed people and blood and in return, it shaped our modern society.

Why do revolutions happen? Some revolutions happen when one person gives an idea. People gets “brainwashed” and then does anything to achieve it. Some, on the other hand, has two groups of people who have different ideas about something. The start an argument and that leads to conflict (war) between each other. While others are when a group of lower-middle class workers are tired and sick of how they are treated. Then, one class tries to eliminate the other. Sometimes, the people are not satisfied with their leaders of they aren’t doing things for their country, they would revolt and soon, it would start a war.

Panic by Lauren Oliver

The book, Panic, by Lauren Oliver, in a way, it has a similar idea and is kind of relative to the movie Nerve, by Jeanne Ryan. My main conflict in my book is man vs self. Heather the main character overcomes her fear of thing and faces many challenges to get what she desires. She had never thought of herself as a fearless kind of person who would fight. She had a sudden terror that she was going to lose her balance and go tumbling down the rocky slop, cracking her head in the shallows. (pg. 22)From this, we can tell that she has a fear of heights but instead of turning back, she jumps off. “Heather felt nausea rising in her throat. She hated guns.” (pg. 101) She is afraid of guns too but she reached for it. She finds something and someone to fight for, and she discovers that she is braver than she thinks. It also q

The movie Nerve, by Jeanne Ryan, also portrays this type of conflict. The main character, Vee, conquer her fears of trying new things. She seems like a shy person at first, but in the end, she became a person who was a risk taker and who stood up for herself. A part in the movie tells that Vee, she has to complete this challenge her friend was supposed to do but she gave up. Vee was confident and she crossed the ladder onto the other building without panicking even though she had trouble crossing and fear of heights. That shows us that she overcame her fear. She was also very shy at the beginning and afraid at what people would see her and think of her, but in the end, she stood up for herself and other people.

Foosball Table

For One Day, Grace and I decided to make a foosball table. We thought that we couldn’t be able to make it, but we finished it in time. We had to prepare all the supplies and measure everything. Our goal was to finish the foosball table in time so we would be able to display it.

It was very hard to poke the holes but we were able to do it. The sticks were kind of short so we broke one of the sticks into 4 pieces and glued it to the other sticks. It was difficult because it wasn’t very stable. and strong. It would often break and we would have to glue or tape it together. We had to make the holes bigger so it would be able to turn the sticks around.

It was also hard for us to cut out the goal and glue it together. We often got hurt because of the hot glue but it was ok.  I think the hardest part of the project was gluing the sticks together. The players weren’t difficult to make and it was easy to glue onto the sticks.

At last, we forgot to draw the court so we had to do it. I learned that you can do anything if you try or best you can do it. I had a great One Day with Grace and I successfully made our foosball table.
