1. What did I learn about how writers use language to create a humorous effect?
Writers used a variety of techniques to create a humorous effect. Specifically, in Confusion, the playwright effectively employs the techniques including irony, hyperbole, and slapstick in the British Humor, which I was very interested in exploring the content. In the Between Mouthfuls play in Confusions, the author effectively utilizes behavioral and dramatic irony, as depicting two men went out of the restaurant. In the poetry unit, however, I learned skills to analyze the poem in the way of TPCAST and SMILE, especially from the structure, tone, and techniques aspects. This can be found in my annotation (attached), although the poem I chose does not contain a relatively “deep” meaning. I realized that poems are different from novels because poems have unique rhythms. In this way my strategy is to read poems out loud a few times. To conclude, I learned both terminology and skills to identify how writers use language to create such a humorous effect.
2. What are some things that I would still like to learn more about with respect to this topic?
I would like to learn more about the British humor. Because sometimes I feel confused and slow in getting the funny point of others’ jokes. I hope I can experience the funny points of jokes after I know the basic concepts and techniques of humor. Another interesting thing from my observation is that Americans are more likely to laugh than Chinese when they experience the same “level of humor”. I hope I can find out why after I know more about cultural divergence and different types of humor.
3. Did I achieve the SMART goal I set for myself in this unit? Why or why not?
Yes, I achieve my goals as my scehduled dates. The part that I am doing quite well is that I can identify foreshadowing quickly after I read some parts of the script. In other words, my “literature instinct” strengthens during this unit. However, I am not quite good at analyzing the techniques presented in the drama, and I failed to use more literary language to interpret my ideas. However, I think I did pretty well in terms of analyzing the the poetry.
4. What was particularly challenging about this unit?
The most challenging part is the drama analysis. I find it’s hard because I haven’t learned about how to analyze dramas systematically before. Although I can understand the plot of the play, I may mistakenly understand the hidden literary techniques presented in dramas. Moreover, I think it’s difficult to manage my time efficiently because this unit is a self-directed and self-learning style. I hope I can do better in Grade 10.
5. What successes did I have?
I think my made a great progress in my CER practice. I effectively utilize textual evidences to support my claim and take advantage of CER structure to organize paragraphs in a more logical way. CER structure is very important in Grade 10.
6. To what extent did I meet the Student as a Learner (SAL) criteria of “Responsibility” and “Attitude”?
For this planned project, I have completed the assignment on time, but I really need to communicate with my teacher whenever I feel confused about some difficult concepts instead of self-assumption. In the future, I should take more active attitude to ask my teacher for help on specific difficult knowledge and get much feedback to improve my understanding. In the meanwhile, I need to improve my efficiency on editing and revising my draft based on teacher’s feedback or comments.
I believe that I am more responsible for my planned schedule of this assignment. I accepted challenges and took initiatives. I think I do pretty well in the responsibility part. However, I need to focus on daily tasks and improve my efficiency.
7. In what ways do I still need to grow with respect to these two SALs?
I still need to become more active in learning, especially my independency and my focus. I need to practice more in completing my tasks on time. I also need to improve my responsibility because I lack self-discipline. I will work harder in my future learning. Moreover, I need to improve my learning efficiency and focused more on tasks while I learn, as this will shorten the time of my learning.
8. What goals do I have for my learning in English 10?
I would like to improve my reading and writing skills which are sufficiently needed in the SAT test and the future learning. Because I transferred to ISB in Grade 7 from a public school and my native language is Mandarin, my ability to read and write is weaker to some extent compared to my peers. As I usually spend more time finishing my homework than my classmates. I hope in the future, I can express my ideas accurately and clearly in English.
