the book Rascal is about a boy who adopts a raccoon who he named rascal, because of the natural black mask around his eyes. the boy had other pets: a dog, woodchucks, a crow, cats and even skunks. he lived with only his father. his father let him build a canoe in the living room and let him have any pet he wanted. he had two older sisters, a big brother who was fighting in WWI, and his mom was dead. they had a lot of fun and adventures together, like going camping, planting, and going to his uncle’s house. but, in the end, the boy realized that he can’t keep rascal forever, and he was dating a female anyway. so he let him join the female, and he started a new life.
my favorite character in this story is rascal, because he’s so cute. he’s smart, too, because when the boy locked him in a cage, he figured out how to get out. he learnt to swim, and how to take an ear of corn off the plant.
a connection i have is when we had hamsters. we used to let them out during the day, but they kept chewing on things, so we had to lock them in cages. in this book, the boy used to let rascal out, but he kept stealing other people’s crops.
