pedro’s letter to his mother 2

well, mother, i am sorry, but my captain Columbus claimed the 10000 maravedis to himself. he found land!

the next morning, we went on the dinghies to go on shore. the captain stuck a pole in the sand. but then, we saw people come out of the forests! they were naked, and had tan colored skin. most had paintings on it. they thought we were gods from the sky. we traded invaluable things like beads mirrors and bells that they seemed to be astonished at. they gave us parrots, spears, and cotton thread.

they took us to their homes and let us sit in a special chair. it had hands and feet, and a face. they made the children and women kiss our hands and feet. but i could not accept this honor. i was too young. our captain was too old.

when we went back to the beach, captain said “see this man? see how docile they are? they will be easy. we will take six young men to Spain.”

to this, i lowered my eyes.

pedro’s letter to his mother.

dear mother,

as you, know, i am on captain columbus’s ships , Pinta, Santa Maria, and the Niña. the start of the journey was good. we have enough food for 28 days, but what will we eat after? that worries me. the captain says who spots land first, who will get 10000 maravedis. i will be the first to spot land so i can buy new clothes for you.

today we spotted a large mast that belongs to a ship 120 tons of weight. what is this uncharted waters that devours large ships and spits out parts? other of that, today our crew spotted a star fall into the waters. this scared everyone, but the captain said he saw thousands of stars fall down, and that always gave great blessings. this comforted everyone, but in the captain’s logs, he stated that he had never seen one this close to the ship.

today we saw kelp in the waters. this meant land! all of the crew were cheering. and then, we spotted porpoises swimming near us, and one of the crew harpooned one. it was sad seeing it die, but we were in need for food. then we saw a crab on the kelp! we were defiantly near land! mother, i will be coming home with 10000 maravedis for you!

Grandfather’s Journey

This book is a part of exploration because in the book, the grandfather left home to explore america. He liked it so much, after he got married in his old home in japan, he and his family moved there. Then his grandson was curious, so he moved there too.

I explored the world when I traveled. For example, When we went to Israel, we explored the country by foot and car. You don’t have to find a new island to be an explorer. you can explore just by traveling to a country you never went to and walk around. Now,  let’s go exploring!

Israel + Parents = Walking, Walking, WALKING!!!

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 8.49.53 AM     This spring break, I walked a LOT.

From Haifa’s Akko, that is a place that a lot of  religious people (crusaders, muslims.) wanted to take control of, to Jerusalem’s David’s Tower, that is basically the logo of Jerusalem, to Masada, that the romans wanted to conquer. But the people of Masada thought death was better than being their enemy’s slaves, so they killed themselves. That place is near the Dead sea.

Dad said those places were “educational” and I should be paying attention. Or something like that. Well, I don’t want to hurt mom and dad’s feelings, but I think those places are kinda BORING (except for the dead sea, because it was fun when you could float), but I think it was pretty worth it to go there, because there were a lot of highlights to the trip, like the garlic bread we ate at a restaurant near Galilee lake.

If I could rate this trip report-card style, I would give it a C-. 😛

a war of owls

at america, there is an owl war. it is between the spotted owl and the barred owl. the spotted owl is losing. the number of the spotted owl is going down. now, the humans are helping the spotted owls, by decreasing the population of barred owls. they do that by killing barred owls. they went into the woods, first playing a spotted owl call. If a spotted owl appeared, they left. If not, they played a barred owl call. When it flew out, it was shot.

i think that is a great and clever idea. BUT it is kind of bad because they are killing owls!!! (owls were my favorite animal before penguins.) so i think they should leave some barred owls but they have to control the population.

Zootopia, the awesomest movie ever!

At the past two weekends, I watched Zootopia three times. IT WAS AWESOME! It’s about a bunny who wanted to be a cop. While she was, priority 1 was 14 missing mammal cases. But it was more than that. Well, I don’t want to spoil it for you! Watch it yourself!

just let me tell you, it is so awesome!

The Peace Dragon

Today at school, a peace maker came. She taught us that people annoy you because they are mad. And if you just ignore it, they would stop being mad! If you don’t ignore it, then you’ll get mad and spread the fire to someone else, and soon, the whole house would catch on fire! (not real fire, just madness fire.) and she also taught us that the word peace-talks also means if you want peace, then you have to talk.

Opinion: Sharks need protection from people before it’s too late

Did you know that scientists know more about the moon than the ocean, and 12 people walked on the moon and only 3 people dived to the deepest part of the ocean? Scientists are now starting to learn more about the Earth’s oceans. The result is not good. It turns out we have caused more damage to the oceans than we thought. Many species of fish are in danger to be extinct. one of them is the shark. The main problem is shark finning. That means fishing the shark, cutting out the fins and throwing the body back in the sea. now, most countries are making shark fishing illegal.

I think that is a great idea because with out sharks, the ocean won’t be balanced, and there would be too much small fish in the sea. Sharks might be scary, but we are killing millions of them when they are killing tens of us in a year. Mostly they just mistake us as seals and fish or they were too hungry! If you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you. That’s why I want to save sharks.

The cockroach robot

Scientists are making a robot that would change save people from many disasters. It is- The cockroach robot! Cockroaches may be disgusting. However, they can squish their bodies down to one-fourth of their regular size. They can scamper at lightning speed. Also, they can withstand 900 times their body weight without being hurt. The amount of weight they can withstand is like a man who weighs 200 pounds and is not crushed by 15 African elephants on his head. The cockroach can travel 50 body lengths in a second. The speed is like a human running more than 140 mph. When they squat down, the cockroach can travel 20 body lengths in a second. It is still pretty fast. Scientists in the past have tried to make robots to get into tight places. The scientists thought about soft animals like slugs that can change their shapes. However, the cockroach is even better. It is hard to smash and it is very fast.

I think it is a very good idea because the robots can go into places where humans cannot, like cracks and broken windows. But still, people hate cockroaches. I think this robot would change that because if your enemy saved your life, would you be friends with him (or her)?
