Fringe Festival Logo

Client Name: ISB Fringe Festival

Background: This year will be ISB’s 2nd Fringe Festival. Last year was a big success, but the first iteration of the logo was slightly rushed, so it’s time for a proper effort.

Audience: ISB community – students, teachers, & families

Context: T-shirts, posters, web pages. Possibility of other contexts such as stickers, lanyards, etc

  • Does it reflect & express one/some of the keywords from the design brief?

I think round one expresses the idea of fun really well because it has a unique design that isn’t seen for other school logos. It may appeal to younger generations, also because there is a very developed style and theme throughout this one as well as your other design.

  • Does it adhere to the rules of effective logo design? (simplicity, geometry, scaleability, recognizability, etc.)

The curves may blend when sized down; if you edit the idea to match a yin and yang theme, it’ll tie into the Chinese culture and background isb is in, and it’ll make the middle curve more simple and easier to distinguish

  • Is it technically good (vectors, typography, alignment)?

I think the curves were very well constructed, but you should consider how the typography fits in and how easy it’ll be to read depending on the effect you want it to have

  • How do your peers/teachers respond when they see the logo? What questions/suggestions do they have?

Again, I think it’ll appeal to younger generations (ES and possibly MS????) because of the flowy and fun nature in both designs, which also ties in with a lot of graphics and designs you’ll see on social media. The yin and yang idea is a really cool concept that could work, and possibly consider using filled in shapes (not necessarily color, but it is an option)

After receiving this feedback, I made adjustments to the logo by finishing turning it into a yin and yang sign to represent the Chinese cultural part of ISB in the fringe festival.

To select my strongest ideas, I went through all my rough sketches and saw the ones that looked the most prominent and matched the overall theme and characteristics of the Fringe Festival. Then I changed the selected designs into iPad sketches because of how many curves and lines of text were present in my designs. I then traced them and turned them into vectors. From there, I adjusted what I needed to and added colors and text!

I played around and traced a lot with the pen tool; I also filled in a lot of colors and used curves to get the text to be bent. I used pictures that I had drawn and pictures from the internet to help guide me.

What creative decisions did you take and why?

The most predominant decision I made was to change my logo from a flowy line in the middle to yin and yang. This was actually a crucial decision because now my logo has a deeper meaning and value. I also think the decision of the black and white mask took a while to think about. I kept switching the colors around and finally ended up how they are now.
Which design elements and principles have you emphasized, and how does this make your logo effective?
What did you do well in this project?

I think I have emphasized shape and contrast. The color contrasts a lot in my design. You can change around the colors, but because it is a sign of yin and yang or opposites, you need to have two colors with a lot of contrast. My design is also primarily made out of shapes, including the outside circle, masks, shapes within the masks, music notes, etc. Overall I think all of these parts added up created a design that is appealing to look at and has good visual value.
What would you improve/do differently next time, and why?

I think next time I will SAVE MY WORK AFTER EVERYTHING. I found a lot of my vectors got deleted and just disappeared, causing unnecessary extra time to go back and redo parts.

  1. Hi Bella, well done for a successful result. You have followed the design process effectively throughout. Your detailed collection of and response to feedback is particularly detailed. In some areas, you could have gone into more detailed exploration, for example when generating ideas and developing your concepts. There are also further refinements that could be applied to your final design and presentation that I realize was impacted by some technical accidents you had along the way!
