Our project was a lot simpler than most of the other people, but the principles that it uses are very interesting and complex. The double pendulum operates using a principle called Chaotic Motion. We started by designing the whole thing in Fusion 360, then had it 3D printed because we felt like it would be the easiest. After the 3D printing finished, we had to sand the entire thing because it needed to be smooth so that we could spray-paint it. We spray-painted it rainbow because it was Pride Week and we wanted to theme our pendulum.

Brady and I decided to work together for our project, because our research could be combined to spread the workload more evenly. We decided to make a double pendulum. Brady will do the Fusion, and we will assemble the pendulum.

##### Double Pendulum

A double pendulum is a good example of a chaotic system which is highly dependent on the starting configuration. This is known as the Butterfly Effect, and it is applied very widely in the real world. It affects the weather, how the gravity of celestial objects affect others’ orbit, or even the start of WW1.

##### Design & Construction

Brady will design the Fusion with my help. Pride Week is coming up, so we will also spray-paint the pendulums rainbow. We will 3D print the parts, sand them, spray paint them, and then assemble it.

I have a few different ideas for devices and toys to make for this project. The first thing I thought of was a double pendulum, which is a chaotic system with a few neat tricks. The second idea that I had was to make a modified Ruben’s tube because I think that it’s really cool.

##### Double Pendulum

A double pendulum is only different in one way to a regular pendulum, and it is that there is a second pendulum attached to the first one. The swing of the second one massively increases the chaos of both of them, and creates some really crazy patterns. The reason that I thought about this one is because the gravitational potential energy is turned into kinetic energy.

##### Ruben’s Tube

A Ruben’s tube uses sound waves to affect propane flowing through a tube. The tube has little holes in the top, and before you  turn on the sound waves (music), you light the propane coming out of the tube of fire. Then, when the sound waves travel through the tube the fire will change length to match the sound wave. The energy of the sound wave moves through the propane and pushes more or less through the holes depending on the sound wave.

Some of the things that I did well in the socratic seminar were that I contributed my ideas, but didn’t dominate the conversation. I also invited people in to share. Some things I struggled with were giving the specific page number, and also giving a technique and an effect to back up my claim. A goal that I have for next time is to cite three page numbers over the course of the discussion. To do this, I will need to prepare questions in advance that have the page numbers included.

I put a lot of restrictions on myself for this project, and I really struggled with it. I wanted to design a logo that didn’t use stereotypical Mexican images such as cacti or sombreros, so instead I used bright colors and a tile design that reflects a design aesthetic that might be used in a Mexican home. This evokes feelings of safety and security that will make the customer more likely to explore the brand further.

My mom helped me a lot with the design and colors, and my dad gave me feedback to refine the design. Just as a note, I will be referring to the words in my design in italics, so whenever you see a word in italics, it is one of the words in the logo.

My mom actually had the initial idea for this design, we had watched Encanto and talked about using a tile pattern in this logo. We started by really quickly laying out the words, and making a tile. The tile is actually from one of the decorative fonts in Affinity and we found it as we were looking through for the cursive for the first word. The tile is arranged almost be a beginning to the cantina, and the tail of the a leads into the c of the cantina.

I moved the la to the right a bit, because it felt too separate from the cantina. I also moved the tile up, because I wanted to center it horizontally with the cantina.

I shifted the la again so that it lined up with the top right line of the tile, and I added color to this iteration. The deep blue provides a base for the other colors, and the bright reds, yellows, and greens add a playful and inviting feel to the logo.

I changed the font of the cantina because the font I was using before was plain and didn’t add to the aesthetic that I was going for.

For the final design I adjusted the elements one more time, moving the la further to the left, and the tile down and to the right. I also included a black and white version so that it can be used when a color version isn’t available.

This project was very difficult, and I really struggled with it. I really wasn’t coming up with any ideas, and nothing I did helped. I didn’t do a very good job on it, and I’m not proud of it, but it is finished.

Client name: La Cantina

Background: La Cantina is a startup food truck business located in Melbourne, Australia. Currently operating from a vintage van, they serve a range of fresh, contemporary Mexican food at public locations or private events.

Audience: La Cantina is targeting a health and flavor-conscious audience in and around the city of Melbourne. They are able to cater to various functions, as well as public events such as festivals. La Cantina sees its food as affordable, fresh, flavourful, and healthy. La Cantina’s audience and people who live in Melbourne are typically interested in:

• Outdoor lifestyle
• Multiculturalism (many different nationalities live in Melbourne)
• Healthy living (eg exercise, sport, fresh food)
• Fresh food
• Sustainability (eg low waste, low CO2, sustainably sourced food)

Context: La Cantina require a logo for caravan signage, aprons, and a printed menu

I went into this project feeling very confident in my ability to come up with concepts and then apply those to create a design that I am satisfied with, and this project really challenged me to think outside the box and really think about how do use elements and principles to design something that filled the parameters of the assignment.

I had a lot of trouble choosing a song to illustrate because I didn’t want to use lettering, and for most of the songs that I was considering, the only concepts that I could think of primarily used lettering. Some of the songs I considered were Wait For It from Hamilton, Birds by Imagine Dragons, and Freefallin’ by Tom Petty.

Eventually I had a crazy idea that I knew probably wouldn’t work, but I felt like it was the best idea I had at the time. Just for some context, the music that I usually listen to when I’m working is the Tron: Legacy soundtrack. I decided to try and illustrate one of the songs from that soundtrack, but it didn’t have any words. The reason that I said my idea was crazy is that I wanted to try to use different-colored blocks to represent different notes, and to form a rhythm by messing with the spacing between the blocks.

As I started working on the design, I realized that there was one song in the soundtrack that had words. They weren’t lyrics, but they were words in a song which meant that they filled the parameters of the project, so I changed course. I still kept the grid pattern of the first draft, but substituted letters in for the blocks, using solid squares as the spaces. I also added the mountains in the background because the background felt too empty to me.

I wanted to see what it would look like if I took out the spaces and just made it normal text on a plain background, but it didn’t really look how I thought it would, so I moved on.

I chose to change the pink color to blue text  with a slight glow, and orange with the opacity turned down a little bit. I did this because in the movie, the dominant colors are blue and orange. They also contrast nicely opposed to the pink, which was kind of flat. I asked some people, and they all said that the background should have a little bit of noise, but not too much.

I wanted to see what would happen if the text inside the mountains was a different color than the text outside them, but as with the last draft that had pink in it, it didn’t really work with the picture that I had in my head. Just to be sure, I asked some of the people that sat next to me, and they all preferred the one without the pink. It was pretty fun to figure out how to create it, though. I figured out that I could make a  copy of the text inside the mountains as a mask to make it seem as if the text changes color when it is inside the mountains.

I decided to revert back to the design that I had been branching off of and then coming back to for most of this process, but changed something that had been bothering me from the beginning. I took the text, and center-aligned it instead of leaving it left-aligned. If you look back at the (i)s in the previous iterations, they are all in the left-most part of their respective boxes, whereas now they are in the middle.

This is my final draft, and I changed a couple things last-minute. First of all, the base color is  a shade of grey now. I felt like it made the rest of the design stand out a little bit more. The second thing that I changed is that instead of the mountains, I put in a line that starts at the top, and it travels down with you as you read, to guide your eyes to the text. Other lines join it as it descends, to the point that when it reaches the bottom there are four lines. I did this because of the place in the movie where the song takes place. It is right at the beginning, and it introduces the idea of a digital world, which ends up being crucial to the plot of the movie. The scene starts with a single line traveling at a steady pace. That line suddenly turns, and another line joins it. This happens multiple times, and the lines end up looking like you are looking down at a road in the middle of a city. I changed it because I wanted to further reflect the movie.

The poster itself is pretty simple visually, but I worked really hard to maintain legibility

One of the reasons that I chose this song was because I enjoyed the movie. What I realized as I started designing this poster is that since Tron; Legacy is set mostly in a virtual world, the designers were able to create a theme for that world, and design the entire look and feel of the movie around that theme. It is really impressive to watch, and I felt like to not use that theme in my poster would almost be a waste. This was such a blast to create, even though I struggled in the beginning. I’m really proud of this project, and I might actually print this off to hang up somewhere in my house.

Since starting school, I have read Mistborn, Steelheart, Firefight, Calamity, and I am currently reading Rise To Globalism. Rise To Globalism is a history of US foreign policy since World War Two. So far it has been very informative, and I’ve actually enjoyed reading it, which I didn’t expect.  Most of the book is written through exposition, quotes, and analysis. The authors use exposition to describe what happens. They use analysis of the exposition to make claims about what happened. They use quotes to support their analysis.

Hierarchy for print

I came into this project feeling really good about my persona poster, but this was on a shorter time schedule so I wasn’t sure how well I would do.

We started out by really quickly sketching out visual representations of all eight of the design principles, then our teacher Mr. Griffin assigned us each a specific principle to create a poster on.

We each created five different ideas for the poster, then held a peer review session where we talked through our designs with another person and picked the two designs that best communicated the principle that we were assigned.

I ended up choosing these two as the two that I would continue to work on. For the first one, I tried to use a pyramid shape to guide the eye downwards, and I also tried to do that with the rainbow gradient. For the second one, I just tried to emphasize a white dot as much as possible.

I ended up flipping the pyramid so that it would point downwards, changing the bottom rectangle to a grey color to deviate from the rainbow gradient, and shortening the height of each layer as you go down, again to lead your eyes to the grey rectangle.

I had a lot of fun in this project, and I learned a lot. I practiced creating with limitations, and designing something for a purpose. I learned how to create a clipping mask, and how to use design elements and principles to emphasize a certain element. I am also looking forward to the next project that we have, and then beyond.

Persona_Poster_Final (A3 PDF)

I started this project very apprehensive about it. I had never done any sort of graphic design before, so I didn’t really know what to expect. I signed up for this class because it was my only open elective slot. For the first few classes, I was really intimidated because most of the other people there were amazing artists. I am not, so I was very surprised when I ended up having a lot of fun with this assignment. Here is the process I went through to get to my final design.

I took this picture at the beginning of class, when we started on our portraits. I really just needed a picture so that I could start, so I didn’t really care how good of a picture it was. I was planning to take another one at home and then start over, but I didn’t because I liked how the portrait ended up turning out.

I finished the self-portrait by the end of class,  and I was really happy with how it looked. I only chose this style because I was feeling rushed and I wanted to finish quickly. I used the pen tool to make straight lines outlining the major skin tones of my face, then used the color picker to fill in the outlines. I was going to remove the outlines entirely and just leave the shapes, but I felt like the outlines added some boundaries that made the portrait seem more solid.

I wanted the poster to be eye-catching, so I messed around with bright colors and shapes before deciding that the bright colors were drawing too much attention and there wasn’t room to add any text.

I completely changed directions, from a lot of color to just a little bit. I wanted to experiment with contrast, so I sectioned off the poster so that each idea had its own clearly defined space. I wanted to make the headers the only color outside the portrait, to draw attention to them.

I decided that the headers would contrast better if they were black and white, and I started added in the text in each section. I also thought that I wanted lots of contrast, so I changed the size and weight of the text. I also added lorem ipsum text into the interests square so that all three squares would be distinct (I used Zombie Ipsum to generate the text). The lips-colored text inside of goals was a mistake that I liked, so I left it to add more contrast with the rest of the poster.

I realized that I didn’t have my name anywhere on the poster, so I added it in the portrait section for two reasons. The first reason was to mirror the white goals text in the bottom right. The second reason is because my name is a part of my identity just like my face, so the two go well together. I also rotated my portrait to mirror skills, and so that interests, skills, goals, and my name were all facing different directions. I also blurred out the text to make it less distracting.

Over the course of this project, I learned about how to find inspiration and use it to generate ideas, the process of design, and how to use design elements to effectively communicate a certain concept. I practiced using Affinity Designer, making multiple drafts of an idea, and using contrast to separate different elements form each other. I look forward to doing this again, and learning more about graphic design.
