Celebrating 35 years of international education

@Riane_pineda

Our task for this unit was to write a journal which describes the story of the cuban revolution from the perspective of a person who lived in that time period. I chose a poor cuban farmer named Francesco who faces adversity externally and internally all throughout his journey to get this humble farm back.

Cuban Revolution

Our Cuban Revolution in plain english video is an informational video to help the viewer understand the timeline of event in the cuban revolution up to the cuban missile crisis.  We were assigned the task of making a simple easy to understand and creative video on the Cuban Revolution, and I think the art style we chose helped the simplicity and undersandability of our video. My partner and I  collaborated very well together and we helped balance our weaknesses and strengths. We even worked so well together, we managed to find time outside of school to work together to get the video finished. Enjoy the video!

Immigrants are the reason you’re getting paid so much to work at McDonalds

My book was Flesh & Blood So Cheap written by Albert Marrin.
It covers the topic of mass immigration and its difficulties, worker mistreatment, and fire safety back in the 19 and 20th century.
The theme of this book is “The power of change lies in the hands of the people, when the people unite.”
This was supported by events such as The Uprising Of The Twenty Thousand which is heavily discussed in this novel. It is also made clear this is a recurring theme when poor immigrants used their voting power under a democratic republic to help support themselves and future generations.
I believe you should read this book because,
1. it gives a new perspective on factory workers who even today are often looked down upon in our modern society and are seen as people who do not work hard or are uneducated.
2. It also helps us think about they ways we as ordinary people can change the world around us for the better and should be doing more to see the changes we want from our society.
One thing I learned from this novel is the tragedy of how common child labor was in the past especially in rapidly developing countries.
this gave me a better understanding of the past and the hardships many people went through.

PERCY JACKSON: CER

Percy Jackson shouldn’t let him being Poseidon’s son stop him from making friends and making close relationships. Evidence to show that Percy is being isolated by being Poseidon’s son is on page #204- #205 where it says (“The next morning, Chiron moved me to cabin three.
I didn’t have to share with anybody. I had plenty of room for all my stuff: The Minotaur’s horn, one set of spare clothes, and a toiletry bag. I got to sit at my own dinner table, pick all my own activities, call “lights out” whenever I felt like it, and not listen to anybody else.
And I was absolutely miserable.” Excerpt From: Rick Riordan. “Lightning Thief, The (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1).” Apple Books.) This shows that when they found out he was Poseidon’s son they moved him to a cabin by himself where he has nobody to be with making him lonely. He also mentions feelings of isolation. “Just when I’d started to feel accepted, to feel I had a home in cabin eleven and I might be a normal kid—or as normal as you can be when you’re a half-blood—I’d been separated out as if I had some rare disease.” Excerpt From: Rick Riordan. “Lightning Thief, The (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1).” Apple Books. And according to the article linked on dx it says that having no friends can lead to stress/ anxiety. “In a study of over 100 people, researchers found that people who completed a stressful task experienced a faster recovery when they were reminded of people with whom they had strong relationships.” So this shows that feelings of stress/anxiety can cause people to be less able to complete stressful tasks. This is important because Percy has just taken on a dangerous and secretive task, so if he’s in a stressful situation and he’s lonely and sad as he is he might not be able to perform well enough to stay alive. Even more evidence to support this is that in the same article it says. “Loneliness has long been commonly associated with depression” and according to “healthline.com” says that depression is connected to feelings of hopelessness. So this all connects together because Percy has just accepted a quest that puts his life in danger and him being the son of a celebrity should avoid dying. If he has no friends than he could be in extra danger due too him having feeling of depression and anxiety. And because anxiety causes feelings of hopelessness and a lower danger avoidance instinct he would have a much higher chance of dying during his quest that the balance of the earth hangs in, because as its quoted in the book (“Imagine the world in chaos. Nature at war with itself. Olympians forced to choose sides between Zeus and Poseidon. Destruction. Carnage. Millions dead.”Excerpt From: Rick Riordan. “Lightning Thief, The (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1).” Apple Books.)
So its very its very important that this mission succeed and that’s why percy should try to make friends at camp half-blood.

plus:
my two pieces of advice for Percy is:
try not to die. This seems very easy to think of which it is but it pretty relevant. probably because of the fact that he is most likely a very important in this cannon universe that’s probably why the story is about him, and the reasons shown to prove he’s in danger is the dog trying to kill him, the minotaur, and the fact that he’s Posidons son so he is very likely to be attacked.

my other piece of advice is try to make friends. this is because ohs very isolated from people because he’s posidons son so people avoid him and its scientifically proven that loneliness shortens your life span

Hot turf is like green lava

I think my biggest success for this class was making the metal work on my cranky contraption. What i mean by that is i think i did well on measuring and bending the wires to the right shape so they could all work in unison and make the movement replicate waves accurately.

My biggest obstacle was when I had an idea and I tried to follow through with it but it ended up not working so I had to restart with less time.this happened when i had my original idea that was i would use gears to make the pieces in my crank connect but that didn’t work out because the gears would disconnect when i tried to hold them together they would note move at all.

A skill that I developed over this class was I learned the proper stance I need to use a saw when cutting wood. Because i was never used to using this type of saw because out in the woods with my dad when we were cutting vines for water i learned i different way of cutting and i assumed that it was useable for all types of saws.

Day One Simulation Reflection-Ancient Mesopotamia

Today we were tasked with the job of creating an entirely new civilization by making a written language, laws, and also a temple. During the activity I was told to design a temple and write the laws. As a group, we divided the work up by putting Lucas and Eric to write laws I was drawing the temple and Isabella and Janelle were making the written language and trading. But Lucas and Eric had a problem with not knowing basic laws so I wrote the basic ones like punishment for murder and such. Our biggest accomplishment was being the first group to create our catapult ergo being the ones who took over. Our weakest point as a group was in the beginning we could not decide on a written language so we were struggling to get along. If I had the chance to do this activity again I would instead of arguing about a language I would let the people who were assigned that job do their job.
